  • A polymorphism in the serotonin receptor 3A (HTR3A) gene and its association with harm avoidance in women.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Archives of general psychiatry. - : American Medical Association (AMA). - 0003-990X. ; 60:10, s. 1017-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The brain neurotransmitter serotonin is known to affect various aspects of human behavior, including personality traits. Serotonin receptor type 3 is a ligand-gated channel encoded by 2 different subunit genes, HTR3A and HTR3B. A polymorphism (C178T) in the 5' region of the HTR3A gene has recently been identified and suggested to be of functional importance. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the possible association between the C178T polymorphism in the HTR3A gene and personality traits in women. DESIGN: Two independent samples of 35- to 45-year-old Swedish women were recruited using the population register. Sample 1 (n = 195) was assessed via the Karolinska Scales of Personality and the Temperament and Character Inventory; sample 2 (n = 175) was assessed using the latter only. Both samples were genotyped with respect to the C178T polymorphism in the HTR3A gene. The A1596G polymorphism in the same gene was also investigated. RESULTS: A significant association between C178T genotype and the Temperament and Character Inventory factor harm avoidance was observed in sample 1 (corrected for multiple comparisons P =.04); this finding was subsequently replicated in sample 2 (P =.004) (pooled populations: P<.001). In the pooled sample, all harm avoidance subscales were found to be significantly associated with the C178T polymorphism: anticipatory worry (P =.001), fear of uncertainty (P<.001), shyness (P<.001), and fatigability and asthenia (P =.008). In addition, a significant association was found in sample 1 between the C178T polymorphism and the Karolinska Scales of Personality nonconformity factor (corrected P =.002), including the subscales of social desirability (P<.001), indirect aggression (P =.002), verbal aggression (P =.05), and irritability (P<.001). Participants homozygous for the less common T allele (<4%) differed from the remaining women by displaying lower ratings on harm avoidance and nonconformity. CONCLUSION: The C178T polymorphism in the HTR3A gene may affect the personality trait of harm avoidance in women.

  • A Power Cut-Off Technique for Gate Leakage Suppression
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: European Solid-State Circuits Conference (ESSCIRC). ; , s. 171-174
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gate leakage power dissipation is predicted to overtake subthreshold leakage power within the next few years thus adding further problems for designers trying to meet a strict power budget. In this paper a power cut-off technique is proposed, which in steep mode suppresses not only subthreshold leakage but also gate leakage. The proposed technique displays a combination of low total leakage power and short wake-up time.

  • Effects of In-Company Quality Awards on Organizational Performance
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Total quality management (Print). - : Informa UK Limited. - 0954-4127 .- 1360-0613. ; 14:2, s. 235-242
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relationship between total quality management (TQM) practices and improved performance has been frequently discussed in the literature. In this paper, the costs and the effects of in-company quality awards on performance are discussed and analysed. The paper covers a survey of Swedish companies that use or have used in-company quality awards to stimulate TQM efforts and thereby to improve performance. The study cannot show any strong evidence of improved performance for units that applied for the in-company quality award. However, in contrast to units that have not applied, some units that have applied for the in-company quality award considered that the results related to performance have improved greatly. One large positive effect perceived by the participating units was increased customer orientation while the largest costs were put on the description of activities and the improvement work itself.

  • Experiences from working with in-company quality awards : a case study
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: TQM Magazine. - : Emerald. - 0954-478X .- 1758-6887. ; 15:6, s. 397-407
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One way to stimulate total quality management (TQM) efforts in an organisation is to work with a quality award. This paper presents a case study, based on both interviews and document studies, of a unit within the Swedish National Road Administration that has worked with an in-company quality award. The purpose of the case study was to study how a unit experiences and is affected by the work connected with an in-company quality award. Some positive experiences and effects were recognised, such as a perceived improved customer orientation, a comprehensive view of the business, a degree of participation by everyone, systematic improvement work and an increase in the average score from the examiners. The perceived main disadvantage is the amount of work that the in-company quality award requires, especially in the phase of description of activities.

  • Organisational value of participating in a quality award process : a Swedish study
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: TQM Magazine. - : Emerald. - 0954-478X .- 1758-6887. ; 16:2, s. 78-92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One way for organisations to support total quality management, and hence try to increase customer satisfaction is to participate in a quality award process. The purpose of this study is to explore the organisational value of participating in a quality award process. The study is based on interviews at 29 organisations that have participated in the process of the Swedish Quality Award. The main conclusion is that most of the organisations consider the process orientation, customer orientation and improvement work to have been improved as a result of the participation in the quality award process. However, there are also obstacles to surmount in order to benefit fully from the process: difficulties in finding resources within the organisation to perform mandatory work and implement identified improvements, and difficulties in applying the circumstantial model used in the quality award process.

  • The impact of TQM on financial performance
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Measuring Business Excellence. - : Emerald. - 1368-3047. ; 7:1, s. 36-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The question whether an adoption of total quality management (TQM) improves the financial performance has been discussed for several years. Various studies have been conducted to examine the impact of TQM on financial performance, but there is still disagreement concerning the effectiveness of TQM. This paper presents a study of Swedish quality award recipients, which are compared to branch indices and to identified competitors. The comparison concerns the development of different financial performance indicators. The study indicates that the award recipients as a group outperform the branch index and their identified competitors on most of the studied indictors.

  • Platelet-derived growth factor production by B16 melanoma cells leads to increased pericyte abundance in tumors and an associated increase in tumor growth rate
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Cancer Research. - : American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). - 0008-5472 .- 1538-7445. ; 64:8, s. 2725-2733
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptor signaling participates in different processes in solid tumors, including autocrine stimulation of tumor cell growth, recruitment of tumor stroma fibroblasts, and stimulation of tumor angiogenesis. In the present study, the B16 mouse melanoma tumor model was used to investigate the functional consequences of paracrine PDGF stimulation of host-derived cells. Production of PDGF-BB or PDGF-DD by tumor cells was associated with an increased tumor growth rate. Characterization of tumors revealed an increase in pericyte abundance in tumors derived from B16 cells producing PDGF-BB or PDGF-DD. The increased tumor growth rate associated with PDGF-DD production was not seen in mice expressing an attenuated PDGF beta-receptor and was thus dependent on host PDGF beta-receptor signaling. The increased pericyte abundance was not associated with an increased tumor vessel density. However, tumor cell apoptosis, but not proliferation, was reduced in tumors displaying PDGF-induced increased pericyte coverage. Our findings thus demonstrate that paracrine PDGF production stimulates pericyte recruitment to tumor vessels and suggest that pericyte abundance influences tumor cell apoptosis and tumor growth.
