  • Distributed user interfaces for clinical ubiquitous computing applications
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Medical Informatics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1386-5056 .- 1872-8243. ; 74:7-8, s. 545-551
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Ubiquitous computing with multiple interaction devices requires new interface models that support user-specific modifications to applications and facilitate the fast development of active workspaces. Methods: We have developed NOSTOS, a computer-augmented work environment for clinical personnel to explore new user interface paradigms for ubiquitous computing. NOSTOS uses several devices such as digital pens, an active desk, and walk-up displays that allow the system to track documents and activities in the workplace. Results: We present the distributed user interface (DUI) model that allows standalone applications to distribute their user interface components to several devices dynamically at run-time. This mechanism permit clinicians to develop their own user interfaces and forms to clinical information systems to match their specific needs. We discuss the underlying technical concepts of DUIs and show how service discovery, component distribution, events and layout management are dealt with in the NOSTOS system. Conclusion: Our results suggest that DUIs - and similar network-based user interfaces - will be a prerequisite of future mobile user interfaces and essential to develop clinical multi-device environments. © 2005 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. • In-line application of electric fields in capillary separation systems
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The magnitude of an electric field possible to apply in a capillary separation system is limited, because a high electric field causes a too high current through the capillary. Application of the electric field in-line will give an increased conductivity in the column, further increasing the risk of too high currents. The conductivity changes were found to result from an overall increase in ionic strength within the electric field. The increase in ionic strength is caused by the increase in mobile phase ions with electrophoretic velocity against the flow, together with OH- or H3O+ ions (depending on polarity) formed at the inlet electrode. Further it was found that the use of a pressurized reservoir or splitting of the flow at the inlet electrode could significantly limit the conductivity changes and thereby the maximum applicable electric field strengths could be increased.

  • An approach to software product line use case modeling
  • 2006
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Organizations developing software intensive defense systems are today faced with a number challenges related to characteristics of both the market place and the system domain:1. Systems grow ever more complex, consisting of tightly integrated mechanical, electrical/electronic and software components.2. Systems are often developed in short series; ranging from only a few to a few hundred units.3. Systems have very long life spans, typically 30 years or longer.4. Systems are developed with high commonality between different customers; however systems are always customized for specific needs. The goal of the research presented in this thesis is to investigate methods and tools to enable efficient development and maintenance of systems in such a context. The strategy adopted in this work is to utilize the forth system characteristic, high commonality, to achieve this. One approach to software reuse, which could be a potential solution as it enables reuse of common parts but at the same time allow for variations, is known as software product line development. The basic idea of this approach is to use domain knowledge to identify common parts within a family of related products and to separate them from the differences between the products. The commonalties are then used to create a product platform that can be used as a common baseline for all products within such a product family. The main contribution of this licentiate thesis is a product line use case modeling approach tailored towards organizations developing software intensive defense systems. We describe how a common and complete use case model can be developed and maintained for a whole family of products, and how the variations within such a family are modeled using a feature model. Concrete use case models, for particular products within a family, can then be generated by selecting features from a feature model. We furthermore describe extensions to the commercial requirements management tool Telelogic DOORS and the UML modeling tool IBM-Rational Rose to support the proposed approach. The approach was applied and evaluated in an industrial case study in the target domain. Based on the collected case study data we draw the conclusion that the approach performs better than modeling according to the styles and guidelines specified by the IBM-Rational Unified Process (RUP) in the current industrial context. The results however also indicate that for the approach to be successfully applied, stronger configuration management and product planning functions than traditionally found in RUP projects are needed.

  • Engineering Families of Software-Intensive Systems using Features, Goals and Scenarios
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Over the last decade, software has become an integral part of many products with which it is not traditionally associated (e.g., automobiles, medical equipment, home appliances, etc.). This has led to problems in many organizations, since it has proved difficult to integrate software engineering processes with other engineering processes. To address the increased complexity and to coordinate their engineering efforts, many organizations working in such domains have therefore introduced systems engineering into their business processes. Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary approach to system development. Teamwork is essential in developing complex systems, and systems engineering orchestrates this process throughout the lifespan of a system. The focus of systems engineering is on defining customer needs and required functionality, documenting requirements, synthesizing a design and validating the system. A problem with the traditional techniques of systems engineering is, however, that they provide inadequate support for achieving high levels of reuse between different projects. In this dissertation, methods and tools with the overall purpose of providing an improved reuse infrastructure for systems engineering artifacts and their resulting detailed design artifacts are proposed. The proposed methods and tools are based on the software product-line approach, a reuse strategy which focuses on families of related systems that address particular market segments. Studies have shown that if an empirical study does not report experiences from that which practitioners consider a “real” situation, results are likely to be ignored. Even though case studies cannot achieve the scientific rigor of formal experiments, case studies can provide enough information to decide if a specific technology will benefit a particular organization. To ensure industry-relevant research results, case studies on real development projects were chosen as the main vehicle for performing research. This dissertation reports experiences from four empirical studies which were performed within the Swedish defense industry. The studies indicate that the proposed methods and tools indeed provide an improved reuse infrastructure, compared to the previously used methods and tools.

  • Industrial Dynamics: A Multilevel Study of the Swedish IT Industry
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The first Swedish information technology (IT) organizations were founded in the 1950s, but it was only in the early 1990s that the number of organizations in the IT industry started to grow. In the late 1990s, growth took off rapidly, peaking when the stock market bubble burst in March 2000. In subsequent years, many IT organizations were disbanded. Although there ex¬ists much research into the Swedish IT industry, it contains a number of principal limitations, for example, the empirical data used may cover only one or a few years and most studies in¬clude only a few organizations. This thesis explains and analyzes changes in a dynamic industry. The Swedish IT industry in the 1990–2004 period provides an appropriate example of such an industry, as there was a great diversity of organizations in this industry, there were high rates of organiza¬tional entry and exit, and Sweden was regarded as a leading IT nation. The thesis is pri¬marily inspired by or¬ganizational ecology theory, as it deals with whole industries, has a long-term perspective, and analyzes organizational entry and exit. The thesis comprises four studies, each examining specific aspects of dynamics: patterns of founding and disbanding of IT industry subgroups, patterns of founding and disbanding rates of IT organizations across different locations in Sweden, patterns of co-development with an industry complementary to the IT industry, and IT organizations’ ability to change. Longitudi¬nal analyses of the industry and a case study of an organization were carried out. Analytical models were employed to analyze all Swedish IT organizations founded in the 1990–2004 pe¬riod, and a qualitative case study approach was used to study the development of one Swedish IT organization since its founding period. The findings of the studies support the established models in organizational ecology; thus, legitimation made it initially easy to establish new organizations and competition resulted in many organizations being disbanded. Furthermore, I found that two subgroups of the industry, spin-offs and start-ups, competed with each other. However, the spin-offs outperformed the start-ups as they acquired resources from their parent organizations. Moreover, I found that IT organizations were largely concentrated in two locations in Sweden. The effects on founding and disbanding of organizations differed significantly between these concentrated locations and a scattered area: it was easier to establish organizations in the two concentrated locations than in the scattered area, and organizational ability to survive was higher in the two concen¬trated locations. Furthermore, local avail¬ability of resources such as skilled human resources resulted in better chances of survival for organizations in the concentrated locations. A recip¬rocal relationship between the local IT industry and the local availability of skilled human re¬sources was identified, implying symbiotic dependency between the local industry and the local university. In addition, I found that a complementary industry, the venture capital industry, facilitated the creation of IT organizations and improved their ability to survive, as they pro¬vided IT organizations with capital and financial competence. Furthermore, I found that IT organizations’ ability to change was limited, which resulted in many IT organizations being disbanded when there was a tightening of resources, such as skilled labor and venture capital. Finally, when I studied the concept of imprinting, I found it to be under-developed in organiza¬tional ecology, leading to some new insights into how to refine the concept for organizational ecologists.

  • Molecular phylogenetics of Alchemilla, Aphanes and Lachemilla (Rosaceae) inferred from plastid and nuclear intron and spacer DNA sequences, with comments on generic classification
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution. - : Elsevier BV. - 1055-7903 .- 1095-9513. ; 47, s. 1030-1044
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alchemilla (the lady’s mantles) is a well known but inconspicuous group in the Rosaceae, notable for its ornamental leaves and pharmaceutical properties. The systematics of Alchemilla has remained poorly understood, most likely due to confusion resulting from apomixis, polyploidisation and hybridisation, which are frequently observed in the group, and which have led to the description of a large number of (micro-) species. A molecular phylogeny of the genus, including all sections of Alchemilla and Lachemilla as well as five representatives of Aphanes, based on the analysis of the chloroplast trnL–trnF and the nuclear ITS regions is presented here. Gene phylogenies reconstructed from the nuclear and chloroplast sequence data were largely congruent. Limited conflict between the data partitions was observed with respect to a small number of taxa. This is likely to be the result of hybridisation/introgression or incomplete lineage sorting. Four distinct clades were resolved, corresponding to major geographical division and life forms: Eurasian Alchemilla, annual Aphanes, South American Lachemilla and African Alchemilla. We argue for a wider circumscription of the genus Alchemilla, including Lachemilla and Aphanes, based on the morphology and the phylogenetic relationships between the different clades.

  • Allopolyploidy in Fragariinae (Rosaceae): Comparing four DNA sequence regions, with comments on classification
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Molecular phylogenetics and evolution. - : Elsevier BV. - 1055-7903 .- 1095-9513. ; 51, s. 269-280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Potential events of allopolyploidy may be indicated by incongruences between separate phylogenies based on plastid and nuclear gene sequences. We sequenced two plastid regions and two nuclear ribosomal regions for 34 ingroup taxa in Fragariinae (Rosaceae), and six outgroup taxa. We found five well supported incongruences that might indicate allopolyploidy events. The incongruences involved Aphanes arvensis, Potentilla miyabei, Potentilla cuneata, Fragaria vesca/moschata, and the Drymocallis clade. We evaluated the strength of conflict and conclude that allopolyploidy may be hypothesised in the four first cases. Phylogenies were estimated using Bayesian inference and analyses were evaluated using convergence diagnostics. Taxonomic implications are discussed for genera such as Alchemilla, Sibbaldianthe, Chamaerhodos, Drymocallis and Fragaria, and for the monospecific Sibbaldiopsis and Potaninia that are nested inside other genera. Two orphan Potentilla species, P. miyabei and P. cuneata are placed in Fragariinae. However, due to unresolved topological incongruences they are not reclassified in any genus.

  • Latex coatings containing antifeedants: formulation, characterization, and application for protection of conifer seedlings against pine weevil feeding.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Progress in organic coatings. - : Elsevier BV. - 0300-9440 .- 1873-331X. ; 63:2, s. 160-166
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Latex-based coatings for protection of tree seedlings against pest insect feeding are evaluated with respect to surface-, mechanical-, and release properties and antifeedant activity. The latex dispersion Eudragit copolymer (EC) was used to form the coatings, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT) and cis-dihydropinidine (Alk) as antifeedants, and a thickener and a alkylglucoside based nonionic surfactant were used as additives to optimize the release- and mechanical properties of coatings. Coating characterization was performed with respect to surface morphology (atomic force microscopy, AFM) and surface wetting (contact angle), as well as to mechanical (tensile stress- and tensile strain at break) properties. Surface smoothness and wettability as well as elasticity increased with addition of the surfactant. The optimized coatings were found to be elastic and water resistant at 3-6 wt.% of BHT and 3 wt.% of surfactant. BHT was released into SDS/water at very low rates. Several formulations of BHT and Alk were efficient in preventing the feeding on conifer bark by a pine insect, Hylobius abietis both in laboratory (no-choice) and in held Q months) tests.
