- E2A, HEB and E2-2 genes encode a group of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors that are structurally and functionally similar. Deletion of the genes encoding either of these proteins leads to early lethality and a block in B lymphocyte development. Evidence for a function in T lymphocyte development has, however, only been reported for E2A and HEB. To further elucidate the role of E2-2 at developmental stages that have proven difficult to study due to the early lethality phenotype of mice defective in E2-2, we generated and analyzed mice conditionally mutated in the E2-2 gene. These mice are mosaic with respect to E2-2 expression, consisting of cells with either one functional and one null mutated E2-2 allele or two null mutated alleles. Using this experimental model, we find that cells with a homozygous null mutated E2-2 gene are under-represented in B lymphocyte as well as T lymphocyte cell lineages as compared to other hematopoietic or non-hematopoietic cell lineages. Our data suggests that E2-2 deficiency leads to a partial block in both B and T lymphocyte development. The block in T cell development appears to occur at an early stage in differentiation, since skewing in the mosaicism is observed already in CD4+8+ double-positive thymocytes.

- Vid ett antal lärosäten i Sverige har lokala system för att redovisa det egna lärosätets vetenskapliga publicering (publiceringsdatabaser) redan tagits i drift eller håller på att utvecklas. Uppgifterna i dessa system ligger i de flesta fall till grund för den redovisning av vetenskaplig publicering som Utbildningsdepartementet numera efterfrågar. För detta ändamål, och för eventuellt andra jämförande studier, är det viktigt att data anges på ett enhetligt sätt. Detta är även förutsättningen för att ett informationsutbyte vid exempelvis en gemensam exponering av svensk vetenskaplig publicering skall kunna möjliggöras.Därför har representanter för en del av dessa lärosäten fått i uppdrag att inom delprojekt 1 (DP 1) inom Samordning av den svenska högskolans elektroniska publicering (SVEP) utarbeta ett förslag till gemensamma riktlinjer för dessa publiceringsdatabaser.Dessa riktlinjer syftar till att ange vilka uppgifter som minst ska vara med vid beskrivningen av en publikation samt till att få en enhetlig klassificering vad gäller publikationstyp och ämnesområde.Förslag till utökningar av minimiformatet ges också under de olika elementen i beskrivingsformatet. Dessa utökningar motsvarar i princip en fullständig beskrivningsnivå.

Suffering related to health care : a study of breast cancer patients' experiences.

- A previous study indicated that patient narratives include experiences of suffering caused or increased by health-care encounters. The aim of this study was to interpret and understand the meaning of patients' experiences of suffering related to health care from an ethical, existential and ontological standpoint. Sixteen women with breast cancer in Sweden and Finland took part in qualitative interviews analysed with a hermeneutic, interpretive approach. The outcome showed that suffering related to health care is a complex phenomenon and constitutes an ethical challenge to health-care personnel. The women's experiences of suffering related to health care tended to be of similar seriousness as their experiences of suffering in relation to having cancer. In an ethical, existential and ontological sense, suffering related to health care is basically a matter of neglect and uncaring where the patient's existential suffering is not seen and she is not viewed as a whole human being.

- In the end of the1940's Occupational Medicine was institutionalised in Sweden. Health hazilards in the work place was not a new field for the Swedish physicians. They had been preocrcupied with these problems for a long time.The aim of this thesis is to analyse and describe how health hazards in the work placees, ecpecially in the factories, were perceived and described by Swedish physicians at the turn of the 20t century. The aim is also to clarify the physicians' role m shaping, developing and supervising the Occupational Safety and Health Acts. The city of Norrköping is used as anexample in discussing how physicians at a local level paid attention to health and safety issues in the work place.According to the physicians, there were a number of harmful factors in the factory work that could endanger health, but these were also seen to be dependent on the worker. Workers ldisplayed different kinds of vulnerability to the harmful factors. Sex, heredity, age, health, physique, habits and behaviour were understood as determining components. The preventive measures not only contained guidelines for the factories. They also included advises on how '!the workers should organise and live their lives outside work.The life style and behaviour the physicians would like to encourage were aligned with the !cultural values of the bourgeoisie at the tum of the 20th century. It is vital to recognise the cultural lens through which the physicians perceived and spoke of the workers' situation, their way of life and their behaviour inside as well as outside the factory.
