  • The extreme male brain revisited: gender coherence in adults with autism spectrum disorder
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Psychiatry. - London, United Kingdom : Royal College of Psychiatrists. - 0007-1250 .- 1472-1465. ; 201:2, s. 116-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background The 'extreme male brain' theory suggests that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is an extreme variant of male intelligence. However, somewhat paradoxically, many individuals with ASD display androgynous physical features regardless of gender. Aims To assess physical measures, supposedly related to androgen influence, in adults with and without ASD. Method Serum hormone levels, anthropometry, the ratio of 2nd to 4th digit length (2D:4D) and psychiatric symptomatology were measured in 50 adults with high-functioning ASD and age- and gender-matched neurotypical controls. Photographs of face and body, as well as voice recordings, were obtained and assessed with respect to gender coherence, blindly and independently, by eight assessors. Results Women with ASD had higher total and bioactive testosterone levels, less feminine facial features and a larger head circumference than female controls. Men in the ASD group were assessed as having less masculine body characteristics and voice quality, and displayed higher (i.e. less masculine) 2D:4D ratios, but similar testosterone levels to controls. Androgynous facial features correlated strongly and positively with autistic traits measured with the Autism-Spectrum Quotient in the total sample. In males and females with ASD dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate did not decrease with age, in contrast to the control group. Conclusions Women with ASD had elevated testosterone levels and several masculinised characteristics compared with controls, whereas men with ASD displayed several feminised characteristics. Our findings suggest that ASD, rather than being characterised by masculinisation in both genders, may constitute a gender defiant disorder.

  • Managing political crisis : an interactional approach to "image repair"
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Communication Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1363-254X .- 1478-0852. ; 16:3, s. 264-279
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to extend the image repair theory by focusing on the largely ignored context of the face-to-face communication. The paper offers an exploratory study of how image repair work is carried out in interviews with politicians in the context of press conferences.Design/methodology/approach - The paper combines theoretical reflections with two qualitative case studies of press conferences of Swedish politicians. These press conferences were held to manage the challenge posed to the politicians’ public image by the media criticism. The analytical frame employed in this study is Conversation Analysis (CA).Findings - The way journalists act during interviews and how they pose questions have noticeable consequences for the accused actor´s image repair work. Image repair strategies like "apologizing" and "mortification" during the speech section of a press conference tend to be more effective as they give the accused greater opportunities to take control of the interaction.Research limitations/implications - Due to the exploratory nature of this interactional approach and the fact that the analysis involves only two cases, the findings must be seen as provisional.Practical implications - The knowledge of how journalists construct question is of high relevance for crisis communication and image repair work, and therefore of high value of public relations practitioners.Originality/value - The interactional approach to image repair offers a new theoretical frame for the understanding of crisis management in interview situations. The approach especially highlights the importance of journalists' questions in image repair work.

  • Featuring Sustainability - social sustainability impact of Open Innovation Software
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The proceedings of the 5th ISPIM Innovation Symposium.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As ICT has shown itself useful when it comes to promoting sustainability performance internally as well as externally to the organization, it also relates to the concept of sustainable development. Unfortunately, research on features of Open Innovation Software and their sustainability impact, as well as more general research on Open Innovation and organizational sustainability performance are scarce. By means of the core areas of sustainability Bengtsson et al 2012 we research sustainability relatedness of common features of idea management systems. The research shows that the investigated features are mainly directed towards providing user engagement, while features related to transparency, incentives and efficiency all may be seen as indirect effects of providing for user engagement in the idea management system. As a consequence, issues related to transparency, incentives and efficiency that may ensure innovativeness of the ideas and positive social sustainability as an outcome of the user experience, are placed on the manager.

  • One-pot enzymatic polycondensation to telechelic methacrylate-functional oligoesters used for film formation
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: POLYM CHEM. - Cambridge : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 1759-9954 .- 1759-9962. ; 2:3, s. 714-719
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on largely renewable monomers, an enzymatic one-pot polycondensation route towards functional oligomers with targeted molecular weights and end-groups was developed. This one-pot synthesis was performed by combining Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), ethylene glycol, and divinyl adipate under reduced pressure (72 mbar) at 60 degrees C. The polymerization went to completion (>95% conversion for all monomers) within 24 h and the fraction of methacrylate end-groups was >90%. Three targeted dimethacrylate functional oligomers with molecular weights of 920, 1700 and 2500 g mol(-1) (degrees of polymerization 4, 8, and 13 respectively) were synthesized. The oligomer products were characterized by NMR, MALDI-TOF MS and SEC. The dimethacrylate functional oligomers were further UV homopolymerized or combined with a tetrathiol crosslinker to demonstrate the potential to produce novel networks with tunable thermal properties dependent on chain length of the telechelic building blocks. This research is the first to demonstrate methacrylate functionalization and condensation polymerization in a one step process, which expands the growing toolbox for polymer/material chemists towards an increased throughput in available macromonomers used in material design.

  • Morphologic Outcome after Endovascular Treatment of Complicated Type B Aortic Dissection
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1051-0443 .- 1535-7732. ; 24:12, s. 1826-1833
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE:To investigate the long-term morphologic changes of the aorta after thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for acute complicated type B aortic dissection and to analyze whether these changes differed between DeBakey class IIIa and IIIb dissections.MATERIALS AND METHODS:During the period 1999-2009, 58 patients with acute complicated type B aortic dissection were treated with TEVAR. Seven patients lacked follow-up data, leaving 51 patients-17 patients with DeBakey IIIa aortic dissection and 34 patients with DeBakey IIIa aortic dissection IIIb-for inclusion in the study. Computed tomography scans performed before and after TEVAR were evaluated. Maximum thoracic and abdominal aortic diameters and diameters of the true lumen and false lumen at the level of the maximum aortic diameter in the thorax and abdomen were analyzed as well as degree of thrombosis of the false lumen.RESULTS:There was an overall significant reduction of the thoracic aortic diameter, increased true lumen diameter, and reduced false lumen diameter (P < .05). Total thrombosis of the false lumen, with or without reintervention, was seen in 53% of all patients, in 41% primarily and in 12% after reintervention. The IIIa group had a higher degree of total false lumen thrombosis. All patients in the IIIb group had total thrombosis of the false lumen along the stent graft.CONCLUSIONS:Long-term follow-up showed favorable aortic remodeling after TEVAR for acute complicated type B aortic dissection. Total thrombosis of the false lumen occurred more often in patients with DeBakey IIIa aortic dissection compared with patients with DeBakey IIIb aortic dissection.

  • One-Pot Enzymatic Route to Tetraallyl Ether Functional Oligoesters : Synthesis, UV Curing, and Characterization
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Polymer Science Part A. - : Wiley. - 0887-624X .- 1099-0518. ; 48:23, s. 5289-5297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An enzymatic one-pot route in bulk was used to synthesize tetraallyl ether (tAE) functional oligomers based on divinyl adipate, 1,4-butanediol and trimethylolpropane diallyl ether. By using lipase B from Candida antarctica as catalyst and varying the stoichiometric ratio of monomers, it was possible to reach targeted molecular weights (from 1300 to 3300 g mol(-1)) of allyl-ether functional polyesters. The enzyme catalyzed reaction reached completion (>98% conversion based on all monomers) within 24 h at 60 degrees C, under reduced pressure (72 mbar) resulting in similar to 90% yield after filtration. The tAE-functional oligoesters were photopolymerized, without any purification other than removal of the enzyme by filtration, with thiol functional monomers (dithiol, tetrathiol) in a 1: 1 ratio thiol-ene reaction. The photo-initiator, 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone, was used to improve the rate of reaction under UV light. High conversions (96-99% within detection limits) were found for all thiol-ene films as determined by FT-Raman spectroscopy. The tAE-functional oligoesters were characterized by NMR, MALDI, and SEC. The UV-cured homopolymerized films and the thiol-ene films properties were characterized utilizing DSC and DMTA.

  • Effects of decadal deposition of nitrogen and sulfur, and increased temperature, on methane emissions from a boreal peatland
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research. - 0148-0227. ; 115, s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Boreal peatlands represent a significant source of methane to the atmosphere. Pollutants and climate changes resulting from human activity are likely to affect the processes controlling methane emissions from these systems. This study investigated the effects of decadal deposition of nitrogen and sulfate, and increased air temperature, on methane emissions from a northern Swedish peatland during the snow-free seasons of 2005 and 2006, the latter being exceptionally dry. The experimental setup involved a full factorial design at two levels with greenhouse cover (present or absent), nitrogen deposition (2 or 30 kg N ha(-1) a(-1)), and sulfate deposition (3 or 20 kg S ha(-1) a(-1)) as experimental factors. Methane emission rates were measured using static chambers after 10-11 years of experimental manipulations. Emissions were significantly reduced by the greenhouse treatment in 2005, by 30% on average, but not in 2006. The reduction in methane emissions in response to the greenhouse treatment were counteracted by nitrogen deposition; with high nitrogen deposition the effect of the greenhouse cover was low and nonsignificant. High nitrogen deposition increased methane emissions at ambient sulfate levels, probably due to sedge cover increasing from 37 to 65%, but the combination of high nitrogen deposition and high sulfate deposition did not affect methane emissions. Effects of increased nitrogen on methane emission have previously in short-term manipulations (<6 years) been ranging from slightly negative to slightly positive. The substantial positive effects observed in this study emphasize the need for long-term manipulations to obtain valid results under natural conditions.

  • Production and oxidation of methane in a boreal mire after a decade of increased temperature and nitrogen and sulfur deposition
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Global Change Biology. - : Wiley. - 1354-1013 .- 1365-2486. ; 16, s. 2130-2144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Natural wetlands are the single largest source of atmospheric methane (CH(4)). Both a changed climate and deposition of anthropogenic nitrogen and sulfur can alter the production and oxidation of CH(4) respectively and thereby also CH(4) exchange. We used a long-term (12 years) factorial field experiment in a boreal oligotrophic mire to evaluate the effects of greenhouse cover and addition of ammonium nitrate and sodium sulfate on the production and oxidation of CH(4) by applying laboratory incubations of samples from five depths in the mire. The rates of CH(4) production were measured without amendments and after the addition of either glucose or sulfate. Twelve years of increased nitrogen deposition has changed the mire from a Sphagnum-dominated plant community to one dominated by sedges and dwarf shrubs. The deposition of nitrogen to the field plots caused increased production of CH(4) in incubations without amendments (34%), and also after amendments with glucose (40%) or sulfate (42%). This indicates increased substrate availability (without amendments) but also a greater abundance of methanogens (glucose amendment). The greenhouse cover caused a decrease in CH(4) production in incubations without amendments (34%), after glucose amendment (20%) and after sulfate amendment (31%). These responses indicate decreased substrate availability (without amendment) accompanied by the reduced abundance of methanogens (glucose amendment). The field application of sulfur had no effect on CH(4) production at the depth where maximal CH(4) production occurred. Closer to the mire surface, however, the rate of CH(4) production was significantly reduced by 32-45%. These results suggest that the deposition of sulfate has altered the vertical distribution of methanogens and sulfate-reducing bacteria. The oxidation of CH(4) was not significantly affected by any of the long-term field treatments.
