  • The intermediality of performance
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Intermedial Studies. - London : Routledge. - 9781032004549 - 9781003174288 - 9781032004662 ; , s. 198-224
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, we will focus on performance as an aesthetic orcommunicative event that unfolds at a specific time and in a specific space set apart from the social world. Not only people come together in a performance, bu talso many different kinds of materialities and media. In the unique moment ofperformance that unfolds in time and space, the performer interacts with anaudience but also with other objects: props such as the famous skull thatHamlet holds in his hand or technical devices such as the microphone in astand-up act. In this chapter, we will look closely at how different kinds ofbodies and objects interact in a performance and at how the presence and emergence of an event interact with mediation and transmediation. Pantomimes, stand-up comedy acts, drama and music concerts can be understood as different qualified media types that take place in the context of different architectural framings that already in themselves indicate which conventions areat play, what kind of performance the audience should expect and what kind ofresponse is expected from the audience.

  • Media Modalities of theatrical space
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Intermedial Studies : An Introduction to Meaning Across Media - An Introduction to Meaning Across Media. - London : Routledge. - 9781032004662 - 9781032004549 - 9781003174288 ; , s. 255-265
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter focuses on ‘theatre’ in its plural forms and its intermedial modalities. It aims to link concepts stemming from ancient philosophy and post-dramatic theatre with modern intermedial theory. The interaction of space with the material and the technological modalities also makes surprising sound effects possible. In general, theatre grants or attributes agency to both humans and non-human things taking place in between the architectural construction, the stage technology, the staged performance and the interaction with the audience. The understanding of Ancient Greek theatre and theatre in general, has been much informed by the first theoretical treatise describing and analysing the praxis of different ancient performances, namely the Poetics by Aristotle. When post-dramatic theatre gives up the unifying spatiotemporal arrangement of the proscenium theatre, it explores the medial character of the body and the performative agency of the material and spatiotemporal modalitiy of the performance differently.

  • The Anchor and the Dolphin : A History of Emblems
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Palgrave Handbook of Intermediality. - 9783031283215 - 9783031283222 ; , s. 521-550
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter explores the history of emblems, which appear on a broad spectrum between printed literature, visual art, and material culture. Starting from Andrea Alciato’s Emblematum liber of 1531, the chapter explores multiple approaches on how emblems can be understood in the context of other multimodal media types such as insignia, badges, epigrams, hieroglyphs, and visual artifacts. Differentiating between historical and modern semiotic models, it explains the emergence of the notion of “emblem” in relation to tropes such as symbol, ekphrasis, or allegory. It also deconstructs the common narrative of emblems being characterized by a standardized tripartite pattern consisting of a picture, title, and motto, and their historical confinement to the epochs of the Renaissance and Baroque, specifically between the years 1531 and 1750. By analyzing early modern and modern examples, the chapter demonstrates the historical, technological, and sociocultural influences directing the fluid expectations of this genre. Against the various normative attempts to define the emblem, the chapter strives to contribute to a more open-ended approach to emblems, enabling the identification of them even in modern cultural products.

  • Reconsidering Elleström’s medium-centered communication model : a critical inquiry
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Ekphrasis. Images, Cinema, Theatre. Media. - 2067-631X. ; 30:2, s. 93-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lars Elleström’s impact on intermedial studies is undoubtedly foundational, multifaceted and systematic. However, his medium-centered model of communication may be said to rephrase some arbitrary communication constants, such as the principle of transfer/transmission of cognitive import between source and target and through the media product. These kind of theoretical attachments imply that several aspects of communication may have remained unaddressed (the compulsive sender/receiver duality), problematized (the triptych channel/message/meaning) and marginalized (the indispensable role of the socio-political modality in communication in Bäckström, Führer and Schirrmacher 219). Others, consequently, have received new layers of perplexity, such as the semiotic modality being considered as post-sensorial and the sensorial as pre-semiotic. Following an empirical method of inquiry, we enter this discourse from the lived-world experience. We explore Elleström’s model in relation to two major examples drawn from his own significant publications, one from the domain of archeology and the other one from dance. We aspire to elucidate Elleström’s original contribution, but also to trace the roots of his medium-centered communication model’s issues, argued here to have been inherited by the Shannon-Weaver prototype (Shannon and Weaver), Saussure’s speech circuit (Saussure), and by a misconception of Aristotle’s model (Aristotle in Narula 25). Finally, we propose a potential expansion of intermedial communication theory, inspired by theoretical dialogues with other fields of inquiry.
