    • Polyamide 6/clay nanocomposites (PA6CN) were prepared via the melt compounding method by using a new kind of organophilic clay, which was obtained through cointercalation of epoxy resin and quaternary ammonium into Na-montmorillonite. The dispersion effect of this kind of organophilic clay in the matrix was studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM); the silicate layers were dispersed homogeneously and nearly exfoliated in the matrix. This was probably the result of the strong interaction between epoxy groups and amide end groups of PA6. The mechanical properties and heat distortion temperature (HDT) of PA6CN increased dramatically. The notched Izod impact strength of PA6CN was 80% higher than that of PA6 when the clay loading was 5 wt%. Even at 10 wt% clay content, the impact strength was still higher than that of PA6. The finely dispersed silicate layers and the strong interaction between silicate layers and matrix decreased the water absorption. At 10 wt% clay content, PA6CN only absorbs half the amount of water compared with PA6. The dynamic mechanical properties of PA6CN were also studied.

    • Polyamide 6-clay nanocomposites (PA6CN) based on montmorillonite typically show some brittleness with clay addition. In order to address this problem, PA6CN/PP-g-MAH alloys were prepared through blending PA6CN with polypropylene-grafted-maleic anhydride (PP-g-MAH). The mechanical properties, dynamic mechanical temperature spectra, morphology and water absorption of the alloys were studied. Compared with PA6CN, the notched impact strength of the alloys increased greatly while the alloys still maintained higher stiffness and strength than that of PA 6. The morphological studies via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed a PP-g-MAH toughen phase dispersed in PA6CN matrix. As the PP-g-MAH content was increased, reduced water absorption was observed.

  • Synthesis and properties of a new donor model compound for PSII

    • As a model compound for redox components on the donor side of photosystem II (PS II) in green plants, a supramolecular complex 2 was synthesized and characterized. In this complex, two {[(2-hydroxy-3-(morpholin-4-ylmethyl)-5-tert-butyl-benzyl)(pyridyl-2-methyl)amino]methyl} arms are linked to the ortho-positions of a phenol which is expected covalently to be linked to Ru(II) tris-bipyridine through an amide bond. The arms on the substituted-phenol can coordinate two Mn(III) ions. The structure of complex 2 was confirmed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and 2D-NMR (gCOSY, HSQC and HMBC). Its photochemical and electrochemical properties were studied. The results showed that the MLCT band of the compound was red-shifted compared to that of [Ru(byp)(3)](2+) and the luminescence quantum yield was enhanced. In addition, the oxidation potential of ruthenium was higher than the phenol(+)/phenol and Mn(III, IV)/Mn(III) which was consisted with the electron transfer sequence of the donor side of PS II in nature. All these showed that this compound was a good model to mimic the donor side of PS II.

  • Multi-objective fuzzy optimization algorithm for separation-recycle system

    • Separation-recycle system is an important part in chemical process, and its optimization is a multi-objective problem. In this paper the process optimization procedure is proposed. The fuzzy optimization algorithm with the concept of relative importance degree (RID) is utilized to transfer multi-objective optimization (MO-O) model into a single-objective optimization (SO-O) framework. The treatment of process condensate in synthesis ammonia plant is taken as example to illustrate the optimization procedure, and the satisfactory result demonstrates feasibility and effectiveness of the suggested method.

  • Studies on a series of rhenium(I) bipyridyl photosensitive dyes

    • A series of rhemium(I) 2,2'-bipyridyl complexes [fac-(4,4'-di-COOEt-bpy)Re(CO)(3)(Xpy)PF6] (bpy = 2, 2'-bipyridine; py = pyridine; X = 3-methyl, 3-hydroxy, 3-amino, H) were synthesized. Their electrochemical properties, ground state electronic spectra and emission spectra were studied in acetonitrile. As the X group became more electron donating from H to 3-methyl, 3-hydroxy or 3-amino, the Re(II/I) oxidation potentials declined, the MLCT absorption maximum of the complex was changed little, the emission maximum blue-shifted, and the emission intensity and the fluorescence lifetime were decreased.

    • Two novel rhenium(I) 2, 2'-bipyridyl complexes, [(4,4'-di-COOEt-bipy) Re(CO)3 (NCCH3)PF6] and [(4,4'-di-COOEt-bipy) Re (CO)(3) (NCS)], a model complex [(4,4'-di-COOEt-bipy) Re (CO)(3) (pyridine)PF6], were synthesized. Their ground state electronic spectra and emission spectra were measured in acetonitrile. The MLCT absorption maximum of the complex exhibited a considerable red shift as the ligand changed from pyridine to CNCH3, or SCN.
