The study of dissolution kinetics of K2SO4 crystal in aqueous ethanol solutions with a statistical rate theory

- Dissolution kinetics of K2SO4 crystal in aqueous ethanol solutions was studied on-line with ion selective electrode. The concentration of K2SO4 was calculated from the determined electromotive force in which the activity coefficient of components in the liquid phase was calculated with the Pitzer equation. Dissolution kinetic parameters in the modified statistical rate theory were regressed. The correlation results show that dissolution rate of K2SO4 is slower in aqueous ethanol solutions than that in aqueous solutions. The two most important reasons are as follows: (1) The solubility Of K2SO4 in aqueous ethanol solutions is lower than that in aqueous solutions, which causes a decrease of the driving force of mass transfer. (2) The process of surface reaction Of K2SO4 became slower due to the addition of ethanol, so that the whole process is mainly dominated by the surface reaction instead of mass transfer.

- The C and N isotopes of feathers from two subspecies of willow warblers (Phylloscopus trochilus trochilus and Phylloscopus trochilus acredula) are isotopically distinct. Our analysis of 138 adult males from 14 sites distributed across Sweden shows that the mean delta(15)N and delta(13)C values of subspecies acredula (from latitudes above 63 degrees N) were significantly higher than the mean delta(15)N and delta(13)C values of subspecies trochilus (from latitudes below 61 degrees N). The analysed willow warbler feathers had been moulted in the winter quarters and the observed isotopic signatures should thus reflect the isotopic pattern of food assimilated in Africa. The isotopic data observed in Sweden match the dine in morphology, both showing abrupt changes around 62 degrees N. This result agrees with data from ringing recoveries indicating that the two subspecies occupy geographically and isotopically distinct wintering grounds in Africa. Our isotopic data suggest that analysis of stable isotopes of C and N is a promising method to track wintering quarters of European birds that migrate to Africa.

- Theoretical models of coupled T-H-M-C processes of geological media and the associated numerical solutions have become an attractive research focus in geomechanics and related fields in China. This paper provides a systematic overview of the past progress in the fundamental studies of the coupled THM models and numerical methods, and their applications in the fields of oil/gas reservoir, coal mining, and water resources engineering works. The key areas of weakness in research in this field are also outlined and possible directions for the future development are discussed.

- The title compound, {[Mn(C4H4O6)(C12H8N2)] . 6H(2)O}(n), has a linear chain structure containing monomeric [ Mn( C4H4O6)( C12H8N2)] repeat units. Each manganese ion is six-coordinate, with the two phenanthroline N atoms [Mn - N = 2.229 (2) and 2.235 (2) Angstrom] and four O atoms from two tartrate anions [Mn - O-COO = 2.1252 (19) and 2.1310 (19) Angstrom, and Mn - O-OH = 2.2404 (19) and 2.2424 (19) Angstrom] forming a seriously distorted octahedral coordination environment. Six water molecules exist outside every repeat unit as solvate molecules. Extensive hydrogen-bonding interactions and pi-pi stacking of the phenanthroline moieties exist between the chains.

- The fate of some selected heavy metals has been investigated during co-combustion of sewage sludge and coal in two fluidised bed combustors: the 12MWth circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler at CTH and the laboratory scale unit at IVD. The total and species balances were, in general, fairly well closed, and the increased amounts of heavy metals originating from the input sludge were also found in the exit flows. Volatile species such as Hg and Cd are sensitive to the temperature conditions. Thus, almost no mercury was found in the bottom ash, and a cyclone at 350 °C captured little Hg in comparison to a cyclone and filters at 150 °C. The high particle loading in a CFB appears to contribute essentially to the reduction of the flue gas mercury concentration; the emission is reduced by orders of magnitude compared to a plant with low particle concentration. In most cases investigated the emissions of heavy metals were below the limits related to co-combustion set by the European Union.
