  • Multi-leptons with high transverse momentum at HERA

    • Events with at least two high transverse momentum leptons (electrons or muons) are studied using the H1 and ZEUS detectors at HERA with an integrated luminosity of 0.94 fb(-1). The observed numbers of events are in general agreement with the Standard Model predictions. Seven di- and tri-lepton events are observed in e(+)p collision data with a scalar sum of the lepton transverse momenta above 100 GeV while 1.94 +/- 0.17 events are expected. Such events are not observed in e(-)p collisions for which 1.19 +/- 0.12 are predicted. Total visible and differential di-electron and di-muon photoproduction cross sections are extracted in a restricted phase space dominated by photon-photon collisions.

    • Double-tagged interactions of photons with virtualities Q(2) between 10 GeV2 and 200 GeV2 are studied with the data collected by DELPHI at LEPII from 1998 to 2000, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 550 pb(-1). The gamma*gamma* -> mu(+)mu(-) data agree with QED predictions. The cross-section of the reaction gamma*gamma* -> hadrons is measured and compared to the LO and NLO BFKL calculations.

    • The production of single charged and neutral intermediate vector bosons in e(+)e(-) collisions has been studied in the data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP at centre-of-mass energies between 183 and 209 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 640 pb(-1). The measured cross-sections for the reactions, determined in limited kinematic regions, are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.

    • Silicon carbide (SiC) is a wide band gap semiconductor, interesting for its physical properties such as high breakdown field, high saturated drift velocity and high thermal conductivity, which has been intensively studied in the last years. Although the high potentiality of this material, the SiC technology shows at the moment some limitations, indeed, the reliability of SiC-based devices is strictly correlated to the defects present in the crystalline structure. 4H-SiC epilayers were grown by Hot Wall Chemical Vapor Deposition (at 1600 degrees C) and by Sublimation techniques (at 2000 degrees C). A surface investigation of the epilayers has been performed finding particular physical finger-prints correlated with several kind of defects aimed at giving an important feedback to the epitaxial growth processes.   • INTEGRAL detection and follow-up observations of GRBs 080414 and 080603

    • INTEGRAL detected GRB 080414 during an open time observation of the Galactic disk. The long (duration ∼10 s) GRB occurred at an off-axis angle of 11.5 degrees with a peak 20-200 keV flux of 1 ph cm-2 s -1 as reported by [1]. The Watcher robotic telescope started observations of GRB 080414 33 sec post GCN trigger. Initial analysis of the first images shows no new source down to 14 magnitude [2]. The burst location was coincidentally very close (30 arcminutes) to XTE J1810-189, which was active at the time. A common origin has been ruled out. GRB 080603 was detected by INTEGRAL during the Key Programme Observation of the North Ecliptic Pole. The burst occurred at about 3 degrees off-axis with a peak 20-200 keV flux of 0.5 ph cm-2 s-1 [3] and a fluence over the same energy range of ∼10-6 erg cm-2. The GRB was within the JEM-X field of view and is well detected between 3 and 35 keV, with a lightcurve consisting of 2 main pulses of emission. Detailed spectral and temporal analyses of the γ-ray emission from both bursts, along with the X-ray characteristics of GRB 080603 and the results of the search for an optical afterglow of GRB 080414 in the Watcher data are presented.
