  • A method for measuring and valuing transport time variability in logistics and cost benefit analysis
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Research in Transportation Economics. - : Elsevier. - 0739-8859 .- 1875-7979. ; 66, s. 59-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The freight transport system is subject to delays and disturbances, which influence investment and planning decisions made by governments and infrastructure authorities. Traditionally relying on Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) they are dependent on correct and up-to-date input data. So far, little success has been reached in estimating the effects of disturbances for freight. This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of disturbances in freight transport by reviewing and classifying the effects occurring due to transport time variability (TTV) and to suggest a calculation model to estimate the value of transport time variability (VTTV). In order to validate the model and its usability it was successfully tested in a case study for a large Swedish retail company. The effects of delays can be divided into four main types: System Killers, Catastrophic Events, Expected Risks, and Contingencies, of which the last two are relevant for VTTV. The model applies these in a two-step cost function with a fixed and variable part, building on previous studies of VTW for passenger transport based on the scheduling utility approach. A main theoretical result is that the estimation of VTTV is derived mathematically independently of which measure that is chosen for the quantification of TTV.

    • Today transport system is subject to delays and disturbances, which has impacts on the transport chain itself and on the recipients of the goods. These effects influence the investment and planning decisions made by governments and infrastructure authorities. These authorities traditionally rely on Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) as an input to their decisions. By performing CBA calculations they can base their decisions on a solid and comparable foundation. However, CBA is dependent on correct and up-to-date input data, but little success has been reached in determining the effects of disturbances. Largely, this is due to the complex and context depend nature of disturbances and thereby obvious difficulties in estimating the effects. This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of disturbances in freight transport by reviewing and classifying the effects occurring due to transport time variability (TTV) and to suggest a calculation model to mathematically estimate the value of transport time variability (VTTV). The calculation method is tested in a case study for a large Swedish retail company. An extensive literature review has been performed on the existing methods to measure TTV and VTTV. Except identifying the measures used in the studies, any discussions in the studies on which measure to use has also been analysed. Effects of delays are further analysed and mapped in an activity framework of Transport, Transhipment, Delivery, Use of goods and Overall chain effects. Based on this mapping, four main types of disturbances are identified based on Magnitude and Frequency, followed by a suggestion on how these disturbances should be managed in a VTTV perspective. A method has also been developed to mathematically estimate VTTV for freight, extending previous studies on VTTV for passenger transport based on the scheduling utility approach and linked to the previous defined framework of four main types of disturbances. The study has resulted in an improved understanding of the effects of disturbances in freight transport networks through the developed framework. Further, a mathematical method for estimating VTTV has been developed. The model contains is a two-step cost function with a fixed and variable part. The method have successfully been tested on a test data set and proven to be able to estimate VTTV. Furthermore, this study has found that the estimation of VTTV can be (and is) derived mathematically independently of which measure that is chosen for the quantification of TTV.

  • Analyzing animal waste-to-energy supply chains: The case of horse manure
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Renewable Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0960-1481 .- 1879-0682. ; 129, s. 830-837
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To reduce human impact upon the environment, a transition from fossil to renewable energy sources such as biomass is imperative. Biomass from animal waste such as horse manure has unutilized potential as it has yet to be implemented at a large scale as an energy source. Research has demonstrated the technical feasibility of using animal waste for energy conversion, though their supply chain cost poses a barrier, as does a gap in research regarding the specific design of efficient horse manure-to-energy supply chains. In response, we investigated the design of horse manure-to-energy supply chains through interviews and site visits at stables, as well as through interviews with transport companies. Our findings show that horse manure-to-energy supply chains have distinct attributes at all stages of the supply chain such as the geographical spread of stables that determines supply chain design and hampers efficiency. They share several such attributes with forest biomass-to-energy supply chains, from which important needs can be identified, including the industrial development of trucks dedicated to the purpose, mathematical modeling to handle the trade-off of cost of substance loss in storage and cost of transport, and business models that reconcile the conflicting goals of different actors along the supply chains. • A stakeholder analysis of actors and networks for land transport of dangerous goods
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: World Conference on Transport Research - WCTR 2019 Mumbai 26-31 May 2019.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The consequences of a traffic accident involving a lorry is often substantial, but the stakes increase considerably if the lorry carries dangerous goods that can harm people, other living organisms, the environment, property and disturbances in the transport system by closed roads for decontamination. It is of great interest to shippers, transport providers and society at large to reduce the risk of such accident and mitigate any consequences should such accidents occur. The purpose of this paper is to identify and map the stakeholders of dangerous goods transport by land modes and analyse their interest and the relationships between them. The research is based on a literature review and interviews, and takes a wide approach including actors not only actively involved in transport, but also rescue services, policy makers, regulating authorities, municipalities and citizens. Results from the study include a graphical mapping of actors, their influences and relationships in a three level framework of Infrastructure, Transport network, Freight flow and Information flow and the traffic, transport and logistics service markets connecting them. It is observed that not only the traditional transport actors but also societal actors have a large influence on the transport of dangerous goods. The mapping can be useful as a basis for such improved information sharing.

  • Agility in the Swedish intermodal freight market – The effects of the withdrawal of the main provider
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Research in Transportation Business and Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 2210-5395. ; 23 (2017), s. 21-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on interviews and two workshops with the main stakeholders as well as media coverage, this article analyses the changes in the market from the deregulation leading up to the Swedish market exit of CargoNet, the former monopolist provider of intermodal freight transport, and the events that followed. The analysis applies business model theory. When CargoNet left the Swedish market in April 2012, some of the traffic was absorbed by other intermodal providers and the wagon load rail system. The routes to the far north of Sweden, however, were assuming an infrastructure role for the main forwarders and road hauliers, who formed the joint venture Real Rail with CargoNet to continue traffic. The business model applied by Real Rail differed from CargoNet's and other intermodal providers, mainly by the tight connection to the customers, who guaranteed volumes.

  • Business Models for Shipper-Operated Intermodal Transport Solutions
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Cathy Macharis , Sandra Melo , Johan Woxenius , Tom Van Lier (ed.) Sustainable Logistics (Transport and Sustainability, Volume 6). - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 9781784410629 ; , s. 193-215
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose One of the main difficulties in developing new intermodal transport solutions is finding the right business model. Though business models have received limited attention in the existing intermodal research, several authors have pointed out the importance of business models in the intermodal context. Existing intermodal literature discusses several types of different business. The current study takes an in-depth look at The Own-Account Model, its strengths and weaknesses through two empirical examples. The chapter investigates this model by analysing the business model in practice, for example actors, roles and responsibilities, risk distribution and contracts. Methodology Research is conducted using a qualitative approach with two case studies. Osterwalder’s (2004) framework for business models is applied to analyse the empirical cases. Findings The roles and responsibilities of the actors are described. For the parties to be willing to “invest into” the new intermodal solution, long-term contracts are required. The shipper controls the channel, but has to rely heavily on the transport operators for their expertise and resources. The analysis has found that the model can be used to avoid many of the difficulties in setting up a new intermodal solution, such as ensuring the base volume or having the overall control over the intermodal chain. Research implications Better understanding of this type of business model allows authorities to better support the development of intermodal transport through policy measures. The results obtained also improve the understanding of how intermodal transport is performed in practice.

  • Business models for sustainable biofuel transport: the potential for intermodal transport
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526. ; 113:1 February, s. 426-437
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of solid wood biofuels for energy production in heating plants has increased drastically during the last decades. Great interest has been shown in replacing unsustainable road transport of wood fuel with more sustainable intermodal transport. This paper maps the common business models for biofuel transport in Sweden and suggests how these models may be developed to accommodate intermodal transport. A view of the biofuel supply chain as five overlapping networks (industry, material, operations, transport, and infrastructure) connected by four transaction markets (sourcing, operations, transport, and traffic) have been used. Four typical business models have been found: Regional/National Biofuel Company, Local Biofuel Company, Heating Plant Own Account, and Wood Processing Industry. Cooperation and vertical integration among the actors are important to reach the large transport volumes required for intermodal transport. Key issues to increase the intermodal potential are: increased vertical integration and cooperation, sharing of transport resources and infrastructure, joint purchases, outsourcing to expert actors, building trust and open communication, and not underestimating the complexity of intermodal transport. The results have implications for any actor interested in developing intermodal transport or policy measures. The contribution includes the new approach of developing business models by using the five-layer network-market model.

  • Doing Research on Your Colleagues: Practical and Ethical Challenges in Being Closely Related to Your Research Subjects
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: SAGE Research Methods Cases. - 1 Oliver's Yard, 55 City Road, London EC1Y 1SP United Kingdom  : Sage. - 9781526477873 ; , s. 1-10
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Being closely associated with your research subject brings methodological and ethical challenges. This case will discuss these challenges in the context of a study on how university teachers are affected by student feedback, where the researcher was a colleague of the teachers studied. The experiences from the study highlight the importance of being open toward the respondents about the study and letting participation be voluntary. A survey was chosen as this allowed the respondents to be anonymous, although preserving the respondents’ anonymity turned out to be challenging due to the extensive contextual knowledge the researcher held about the colleagues. The same contextual knowledge was also a strength in the analysis, although another challenge was to ensure that the study was not influenced by researcher bias based on the researcher’s preconceptions and personal experiences. Due to the close relationship between the researcher and respondents, it was identified as particularly important to build trust for respondents to volunteer and give truthful answers. Studying colleagues was deemed ethically justifiable, largely because the study was conducted openly and transparently, where respondents volunteered to participate. Furthermore, as the respondents were researchers, they were well aware of the consequences of participating in a research study. Similar challenges to those discussed in this case could also occur in other situations where the researcher is closely associated with the research subjects, such as students doing research on fellow students, or researchers studying other communities in which they are members.
