  • Education as Field and Market : The Case of Upper Secondary School in Stockholm, 2006–2008
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Empirical Investigations of Social Space. - Cham : Springer Publishing Company. - 9783030153861 - 9783030153878 ; , s. 245-266
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the last three decades, Swedish education has undergone profound transformations, including a gradually increasing degree of privatization and marketization. These transformations offer an opportunity to analyse the relation between social space, education as social field and an emerging educational market. A correspondence analysis (CA) of all pupils attending all upper secondary educations in the Stockholm area in 2006–2008, with Euclidean classification as an additional analytic instrument, reveals that the social structure of the field of upper secondary education remains largely the same in spite of the market-oriented reforms. The embodied form of the unequally distributed social and cultural assets of which this structure is an expression, habitus, is particularly important for explaining both the distance and the responsiveness to marketization which characterize and separate elite schools, from medium and lower-ranked schools. It is concluded that the “market” should be understood as embedded in a social field of education that, in turn, reflects the polarities of the larger social space.

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Swedish educational reforms in the beginning of the 1990s, introducing a public-funded voucher system, free school choice and the right to run schools as commercial enterprises, had an important impact on upper secondary education. The Stockholm region, the most populous in Sweden, offered favourable conditions for the growth of a previously non-existent educational market. A massive expansion of independent schools took place, managed primarily by larger companies, along with the extensive marketing of profiled study programmes and the import of management models from the private sector. In 2011 alone, schools competed for 75 000 pupils representing an annual economic value of approximately 8.5 billion SEK.Covering the period 1988 to 2011, this thesis analyses the relationship between the educational market and upper secondary education as a social field structured by the educational strategies of social groups. Building on Bourdieu’s relational sociology, the study combines quantitative and qualitative methods, using correspondence analysis as a major analytical tool. While free school choice and the voucher system established a supply-demand relationship between schools and families and pupils, the analysis shows that the market has submitted to the same forces that structure the field of upper secondary education within which it unfolds, primarily the volume and composition of symbolic and other assets that students, families and schools possess. In fact, the social structure of the field of upper secondary education in Stockholm remains remarkably stable over time, opposing on the one hand female and male dominated education and on the other hand education with high social and scholarly recruitment to that with low. Euclidean clustering analysis unveils a complex social structure reflecting how the increasingly differentiated educational supply has adapted to the needs of various social groups. Elite schools, market-oriented schools and market-exposed schools develop different strategies in the battle over pupils. Competing amongst themselves for pupils rich in inherited and acquired capital, the elite schools withdraw from the openly market-oriented approach that characterises the other type of schools and instead opt for more subtle, long-term strategies for building up trust from their audience, involving investments in staff and other institutional assets.

  • Diamond grating waveplates
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Optical Materials Express. - : Optical Society of America. - 2159-3930. ; 6:6, s. 2024-2030
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two designs of diamond quarter-wave plates for CO2 lasers, based on the birefringence of sub-wavelength gratings, were manufactured and tested. In one design the grating was etched on the surface of a 300 mu m thick polycrystalline diamond substrate. The other consisted of a diamond grating hanging freely in air, suspended at the edges from a silicon frame. The free-hanging design, while more fragile, had several advantages both in terms of fabrication and performance such as a larger grating period, higher transmission, and no need for an antireflective treatment of the backside.

  • Waveguides in polycrystalline diamond for mid-IR sensing
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Optical Materials Express. - 2159-3930. ; 6:4, s. 1286-1295
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 8 mm long channel waveguides were manufactured in polycrystalline diamond with inductively coupled plasma etching and characterized in terms of mode-profile and propagation loss in the 1.5 - 3.4 mu m spectral region. As proof of principle, the waveguides were evaluated in an evanescent field sensing setup targeting the CH absorption peak of isopropanol at similar to 3.4 mu m, showing good agreement with numerical finite element simulations. • Piezoresistive Properties of Suspended Graphene Membranes under Uniaxial and Biaxial Strain in Nanoelectromechanical Pressure Sensors
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1936-0851 .- 1936-086X. ; 10:11, s. 9879-9886
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Graphene membranes act as highly sensitive transducers in nanoelectromechanical devices due to their ultimate thinness. Previously, the piezoresistive effect has been experimentally verified in graphene using uniaxial strain in graphene. Here, we report experimental and theoretical data on the uni- and biaxial piezoresistive properties of suspended graphene membranes applied to piezoresistive pressure sensors. A detailed model that utilizes a linearized Boltzman transport equation describes accurately the charge-carrier density and mobility in strained graphene and, hence, the gauge factor. The gauge factor is found to be practically independent of the doping concentration and crystallographic orientation of the graphene films. These investigations provide deeper insight into the piezoresistive behavior of graphene membranes.

  • Resistive graphene humidity sensors with rapid and direct electrical readout
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2040-3364 .- 2040-3372. ; 7:45, s. 19099-19109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate humidity sensing using a change of the electrical resistance of single-layer chemical vapor deposited (CVD) graphene that is placed on top of a SiO2 layer on a Si wafer. To investigate the selectivity of the sensor towards the most common constituents in air, its signal response was characterized individually for water vapor (H2O), nitrogen (N-2), oxygen (O-2), and argon (Ar). In order to assess the humidity sensing effect for a range from 1% relative humidity (RH) to 96% RH, the devices were characterized both in a vacuum chamber and in a humidity chamber at atmospheric pressure. The measured response and recovery times of the graphene humidity sensors are on the order of several hundred milliseconds. Density functional theory simulations are employed to further investigate the sensitivity of the graphene devices towards water vapor. The interaction between the electrostatic dipole moment of the water and the impurity bands in the SiO(2)d substrate leads to electrostatic doping of the graphene layer. The proposed graphene sensor provides rapid response direct electrical readout and is compatible with back end of the line (BEOL) integration on top of CMOS-based integrated circuits.

  • An update on the VORTEX project
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Techniques and Instrumentation for Detection of Exoplanets VII. - : SPIE.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this talk, we will review the on-going activities within the VORTEX teamat the University of Liège and Uppsala University. The VORTEX project aimsto design, manufacture, test, and exploit vector vortex phase masks madeof sub-wavelength gratings (aka the Annular Groove Phase Mask, AGPM)for the direct detection and characterization of extrasolar planets. This talkwill specifically report on the commissioning of several AGPMs on infraredcameras equipping 10-m class telescopes, including the VLT, the LBT andthe Keck. We will describe the in-lab and on-sky performance of the AGPMs,and discuss first scientific observations. We will also report on the lessonslearned from the on-sky operation of our vortices, and discuss ways toimprove their performance. The potential of our coronagraphic devices inthe context of future extremely large telescopes and space missions will alsobe addressed.

  • Three years of harvest with the vector vortex coronagraph in the thermal infrared
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ground-Based and Airborne Instrumentation for Astronomy VI. - : SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering. - 9781510601963 ; , s. 1-14
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For several years, we have been developing vortex phase masks based on sub-wavelength gratings, known as Annular Groove Phase Masks. Etched onto diamond substrates, these AGPMs are currently designed to be used in the thermal infrared (ranging from 3 to 13 μm). Our AGPMs were first installed on VLT/NACO and VLT/VISIR in 2012, followed by LBT/LMIRCam in 2013 and Keck/NIRC2 in 2015. In this paper, we review the development, commissioning, on-sky performance, and early scientific results of these new coronagraphic modes and report on the lessons learned. We conclude with perspectives for future developments and applications.
