  • The upgraded DO detector
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 565:2, s. 463-537
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The DO experiment enjoyed a very successful data-collection run at the Fermilab Tevatron collider between 1992 and 1996. Since then, the detector has been upgraded to take advantage of improvements to the Tevatron and to enhance its physics capabilities. We describe the new elements of the detector, including the silicon microstrip tracker, central fiber tracker, solenoidal magnet, preshower detectors, forward muon detector, and forward proton detector. The uranium/liquid -argon calorimeters and central muon detector, remaining from Run 1, are discussed briefly. We also present the associated electronics, triggering, and data acquisition systems, along with the design and implementation of software specific to DO.

  • Novel prognostic subgroups in childhood 11q23/MLL-rearranged acute myeloid leukemia : results of an international retrospective study.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Blood. - : American Society of Hematology. - 0006-4971 .- 1528-0020. ; 114:12, s. 2489-2496
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Translocations involving chromosome 11q23 frequently occur in pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and are associated with poor prognosis. In most cases, the MLL gene is involved, and more than 50 translocation partners have been described. Clinical outcome data of the 11q23-rearranged subgroups are scarce because most 11q23 series are too small for meaningful analysis of subgroups, although some studies suggest that patients with t(9;11)(p22;q23) have a more favorable prognosis. We retrospectively collected outcome data of 756 children with 11q23- or MLL-rearranged AML from 11 collaborative groups to identify differences in outcome based on translocation partners. All karyotypes were centrally reviewed before assigning patients to subgroups. The event-free survival of 11q23/MLL-rearranged pediatric AML at 5 years from diagnosis was 44% (+/- 5%), with large differences across subgroups (11% +/- 5% to 92% +/- 5%). Multivariate analysis identified the following subgroups as independent prognostic predictors: t(1;11)(q21;q23) (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.1, P = .004); t(6;11)(q27;q23) (HR = 2.2, P < .001); t(10;11)(p12;q23) (HR = 1.5, P = .005); and t(10;11)(p11.2;q23) (HR = 2.5, P = .005). We could not confirm the favorable prognosis of the t(9;11)(p22;q23) subgroup. We identified large differences in outcome within 11q23/MLL-rearranged pediatric AML and novel subgroups based on translocation partners that independently predict clinical outcome. Screening for these translocation partners is needed for accurate treatment stratification at diagnosis.

  • Sex differences in the association between body mass index and total hip or knee joint replacement resulting from osteoarthritis
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases. - : BMJ. - 1468-2060 .- 0003-4967. ; 68:4, s. 536-540
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To examine the association between body mass index (BMI) and osteoarthritis (OA) leading to total hip (THR) or knee (TKR) joint replacement. Methods: Case-control study design. All patients still living in Iceland who had had a THR or TKR resulting from OA before the end of 2002 were invited to participate. First-degree relatives of participating patients served as controls. A total of 1473 patients ( 872 women) and 1103 controls ( 599 women), all born between 1910 and 1939 and who had answered a questionnaire including questions about height and weight, were analysed. A randomly selected sample, representative of the Icelandic population, was used as a secondary control group. Results: The OR, adjusted for age, occupation and presence of hand OA, for having a THR was 1.1 (95% CI 0.9 to 1.5) for overweight men and 1.7 ( 95% CI 1.0 to 2.9) for obese men. The OR for having a TKR was 1.7 ( 95% CI 1.1 to 2.6) for overweight men and 5.3 ( 95% CI 2.8 to 10.1) for obese men. The OR for having a THR was 1.0 ( 95% CI 0.8 to 1.3) for overweight women and 1.0 ( 95% CI 0.6 to 1.5) for obese women. The OR for having a TKR was 1.6 ( 95% CI 1.1 to 2.2) for overweight women and 4.0 ( 95% CI 2.6 to 6.1) for obese women. Conclusion: This study supports a positive association between high BMI and TKR in both sexes, but for THR the association with BMI seems to be weaker, and possibly negligible for women.

  • Two-material rail development : field test results regarding rolling contact fatigue and squeal behaviour
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Wear. - : Elsevier BV. - 0043-1648 .- 1873-2577. ; 258:7-8, s. 964-972
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Results from the European 5th Framework project “InfraStar” are presented. The InfraStar project is developing a two-material rail to increase the productivity and reliability of rail infrastructure. The two-material rail aims to be rolling contact fatigue (RCF) resistant and to reduce squeal noise. The InfraStar consortium has built a high level of wheel–rail expertise and understanding regarding RCF initiation and development, level and position of wheel–rail contact forces, and new interface materials and has gained experience in both laboratory and field test operating conditions. Within the project a validated theoretical train–track interaction model and a fatigue design model for two-material rails have been developed. This paper focuses on the field test results of the two-material rail, and how the predictions and expectations from the selection process match with the results observed in track. Results are very promising. The two-material rail prototypes, now over 1 year in track, show no RCF damage where the non-treated rail shows clear RCF damage. The development of the application process and other objectives of the InfraStar project are discussed.
