  • Intercomparison of large-eddy simulations of Arctic mixed-phase clouds : Importance of ice size distribution assumptions
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems. - 1942-2466. ; 6:1, s. 223-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Large-eddy simulations of mixed-phase Arctic clouds by 11 different models are analyzed with the goal of improving understanding and model representation of processes controlling the evolution of these clouds. In a case based on observations from the Indirect and Semi-Direct Aerosol Campaign (ISDAC), it is found that ice number concentration, N-i, exerts significant influence on the cloud structure. Increasing N-i leads to a substantial reduction in liquid water path (LWP), in agreement with earlier studies. In contrast to previous intercomparison studies, all models here use the same ice particle properties (i.e., mass-size, mass-fall speed, and mass-capacitance relationships) and a common radiation parameterization. The constrained setup exposes the importance of ice particle size distributions (PSDs) in influencing cloud evolution. A clear separation in LWP and IWP predicted by models with bin and bulk microphysical treatments is documented and attributed primarily to the assumed shape of ice PSD used in bulk schemes. Compared to the bin schemes that explicitly predict the PSD, schemes assuming exponential ice PSD underestimate ice growth by vapor deposition and overestimate mass-weighted fall speed leading to an underprediction of IWP by a factor of two in the considered case. Sensitivity tests indicate LWP and IWP are much closer to the bin model simulations when a modified shape factor which is similar to that predicted by bin model simulation is used in bulk scheme. These results demonstrate the importance of representation of ice PSD in determining the partitioning of liquid and ice and the longevity of mixed-phase clouds.

  • Intestinal cDC1 drive cross-tolerance to epithelial-derived antigen via induction of FoxP3+CD8+ Tregs
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Science Immunology. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 2470-9468. ; 6:60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although CD8+ T cell tolerance to tissue-specific antigen (TSA) is essential for host homeostasis, the mechanisms underlying peripheral cross-tolerance and whether they may differ between tissue sites remain to be fully elucidated. Here, we demonstrate that peripheral cross-tolerance to intestinal epithelial cell (IEC)–derived antigen involves the generation and suppressive function of FoxP3+CD8+ T cells. FoxP3+CD8+ Treg generation was dependent on intestinal cDC1, whose absence led to a break of tolerance and epithelial destruction. Mechanistically, intestinal cDC1-derived PD-L1, TGFβ, and retinoic acid contributed to the generation of gut-tropic CCR9+CD103+FoxP3+CD8+ Tregs. Last, CD103-deficient CD8+ T cells lacked tolerogenic activity in vivo, indicating a role for CD103 in FoxP3+CD8+ Treg function. Our results describe a role for FoxP3+CD8+ Tregs in cross-tolerance in the intestine for which development requires intestinal cDC1.

  • Long-term trends in the body mass index and obesity risk in Estonia : an age-period-cohort approach
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Public Health. - : Springer. - 1661-8556 .- 1661-8564. ; 65, s. 859-869
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ObjectivesTo analyse the age, period and cohort effects on the mean body mass index (BMI) and obesity over the past two decades in Estonia.MethodsStudy used data from nationally representative repeated cross-sectional surveys on 11,547 men and 16,298 women from 1996 to 2018. The independent effects of age, period and cohort on predicted mean BMI and probability of obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) were modelled using hierarchical age–period–cohort analysis.ResultsCurvilinear association between age and mean BMI was found for men, whereas the increase in mean BMI was almost linear for women. The predicted mean BMI for 40-year-old men had increased by 6% and probability of obesity by 1.8 times over 1996–2018; the period effects were slightly smaller for women. Men from the 1970s birth cohort had higher mean BMI compared to the average, whereas no significant cohort effects were found for obesity outcome.ConclusionsPopulation-level BMI changes in Estonia during 1996–2018 were mostly driven by period rather than cohort-specific changes.

  • Structural and spectroscopic study of well-developed crystals of parahibbingite, β-Fe2(OH)3Cl, formed from terrestrial weathering of the Muonionalusta iron meteorite
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Mineralogical magazine. - London : Mineralogical Society. - 0026-461X .- 1471-8022. ; 86:6, s. 891-896
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Parahibbingite [β-Fe2(OH)3Cl], a new mineral recently described from ultramafic rocks in the Bushveld Complex (South Africa), has been found to form millimetric well-developed crystals as a terrestrial weathering product of the Muonionalusta iron meteorite. The mineral, initially identified by means of Raman spectroscopy, was found in a small cavity within a crust of rust on a granitic rock fragment that was in direct contact with the alteration crust of a meteorite specimen, collected in the Kitkiöjärvi area (Sweden). Its crystal structure [a = 6.9362(4), c = 14.673(1) Å, V = 611.35(7) Å3 for Z = 6] was refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data (R1 = 0.0331) in the space group R-3m, thus confirming the structural model of synthetic β-Fe2(OH)3Cl. It consists of a network of octahedrally coordinated Fe2+ atoms alternatively arranged in triangular and Kagomé layers, stacked along the c axis. The H position was determined, showing O-H···Cl bonds which provide a further link between layers. Parahibbingite is found to be not only an important constituent of the corrosion system of archaeological iron artefacts but can also play an important role as an alteration product of iron meteorites.
