  • Measurement of the eta -> 3 pi(0) Dalitz plot distribution with the WASA detector at COSY
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 677:1-2, s. 24-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the first production run of the WASA experiment at COSY, the eta decay into three neutral pions was measured in proton-proton interactions at a proton beam kinetic energy of 1.4 GeV. The Dalitz plot of the three pious was Studied using 1.2 x 10(5) fully reconstructed events. and the quadratic slope parameter alpha was determined to be -0.027 +/- 0.008(stat) +/- 0.005(syst). The result is consistent with previous measurements and further corroborates the importance of pion-pion final state interactions. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Discovery of a Relativistic Supernova Without a Gamma-ray Trigger
  • 2009
  • Annan publikation (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Type Ibc supernovae (SNe Ibc) mark the gravitational collapse of some massive stars (M > 20 Msun) propelling several solar masses of material to typical velocities of ~10,000 km/s. The closely-related but exceedingly rare class of long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) produce, in addition, a relativistic outflow powered by a central engine (accreting black hole or neutron star) and have been found exclusively through their gamma-ray signal. Here we report the discovery of luminous radio emission from the seemingly ordinary Type Ibc SN 2009bb which outshines that of all other SNe Ibc observed on a comparable timescale. These observations require a substantial mildly-relativistic outflow and indicate that the explosion was powered by a central engine, thus representing the first such event discovered without the aid of a gamma-ray trigger. A comparison with our extensive radio survey of SNe Ibc reveals that the fraction of such events is low (roughly 1 percent), measured independently from, and yet consistent with, the inferred rate of nearby GRBs. This discovery marks the observational realization that long-wavelength surveys will soon rival gamma-ray satellites in pinpointing nearby engine-driven explosions.

  • Production of the omega meson in the pd -> He-3 omega reaction at 1450 MeV and 1360 MeV
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 79:4, s. 044002-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production of omega mesons in the pd -> He-3 omega reaction has been studied at two energies near the kinematic threshold, T-p = 1450 MeV and T-p = 1360 MeV. The differential cross section was measured as a function of the omega c.m. angle at both energies over the whole angular range. Whereas the results at 1360 MeV are consistent with isotropy, strong rises are observed near both the forward and backward directions at 1450 MeV. Calculations made using a two-step model with an intermediate pion fail to reproduce the shapes of the measured angular distributions and also underestimate the total cross sections.

  • The normal Type Ia SN 2003hv out to very late phases
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 505:1, s. 265-279
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: We study a thermonuclear supernova (SN), emphasizing very late phases. Methods: An extensive dataset for SN 2003hv that covers the flux evolution from maximum light to day +786 is presented. This includes 82 epochs of optical imaging, 24 epochs of near-infrared (NIR) imaging, and 10 epochs of optical spectroscopy. These data are combined with published nebular-phase IR spectra, and the observations are compared to model light curves and synthetic nebular spectra. Results: SN 2003hv is a normal Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) with photometric and spectroscopic properties consistent with its rarely observed B-band decline-rate parameter, Δ m15(B) = 1.61 ± 0.02. The blueshift of the most isolated [Fe ii] lines in the nebular-phase optical spectrum appears consistent with those observed in the IR at similar epochs. At late times there is a prevalent color evolution from the optical toward the NIR bands. We present the latest-ever detection of a SN Ia in the NIR in Hubble Space Telescope images. The study of the ultraviolet/optical/infrared (UVOIR) light curve reveals that a substantial fraction of the flux is “missing” at late times. Between 300 and 700 days past maximum brightness, the UVOIR light curve declines linearly following the decay of radioactive 56Co, assuming full and instantaneous positron trapping. At 700 days we detect a possible slowdown of the decline in optical-bands, mainly in the V-band. Conclusions: The data are incompatible with a dramatic infrared catastrophe (IRC). However, the idea that an IRC occurred in the densest regions before 350 days can explain the missing flux from the UVOIR wavelengths and the flat-topped profiles in the NIR. We argue that such a scenario is possible if the ejecta are clumpy. The observations suggest that positrons are most likely trapped in the ejecta. • Polarisation of the omega meson in the pd -> He-3 omega reaction at 1360 and 1450 MeV
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - elsevier : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 668:4, s. 258-262
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The tensor polarisation of omega mesons produced in the pd -> He-3 omega reaction has been studied at two energies near threshold. The 3 He nuclei were detected in coincidence with the pi(0)pi(+)pi(-) or pi(0)gamma decay products of the omega. in contrast to the case of phi-meson production, the omega mesons are found to be unpolarised. This brings into question the applicability of the Okubo-Zweig-lizuka rule when comparing the production of vector mesons in low energy hadronic reactions.

  • Large-Area Balloon-Borne Polarized Gamma Ray Observer (PoGO)
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 22nd Texas Symposium on Relativistic Astrophysics at Stanford. ; , s. 736-743
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We are developing a new balloon-borne instrument (PoGO), to measure polarization of soft gamma rays (30-200 keV) using asymmetry in azimuth angle distribution of Compton scattering. PoGO is designed to detect 10 % polarization in 100mCrab sources in a 6-8 hour observation and bring a new dimension to studies on gamma ray emission/transportation mechanism in pulsars, AGNs, black hole binaries, and neutron star surface. The concept is an adaptation to polarization measurements of well-type phoswich counter consisting of a fast plastic scintillator (the detection part), a slow plastic scintillator (the active collimator) and a BGO scintillator (the bottom anti-counter). PoGO consists of close-packed array of 217 hexagonal well-type phoswich counters and has a narrow field-of-view (~ 5 deg2) to reduce possible source confusion. A prototype instrument has been tested in the polarized soft gamma-ray beams at Advanced Photon Source (ANL) and at Photon Factory (KEK). On the results, the polarization dependence of EGS4 has been validated and that of Geant4 has been corrected.

  • Cost-effectiveness of iodixanol in patients at high risk of contrast-induced nephropathy
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: American Heart Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 0002-8703 .- 1097-6744. ; 149:2, s. 298-303
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Acute renal failure after contrast-induced nephropathy is a clinically important and costly complication after the use of iodine-based contrast media. We investigated the cost and cost-effectiveness of 2 contrast media in patients at high risk of contrast-induced nephropathy. Methods: The analyses were based on a randomized, prospective, multinational clinical study comparing the nephrotoxic effects of an isosmolar nonionic contrast medium, iodixanol, with those of a low-osmolar nonionic contrast medium, iohexol. Resource utilization data were obtained from the study and from a retrospective review of patients' hospital records. Swedish, German, and French unit prices were applied to resources used. Between-group differences in average costs were analyzed using a nonparametric bootstrap method. Results: Resource utilization data for 125 patients were analyzed. Seven contrast media-related serious adverse reactions, of which 6 were acute renal failures, were noted in 6 patients receiving iohexol. Two patients in the iodixanol group had 1 nonserious reaction each. The mean hospitalization cost per patient was €489, €573, and €393 lower after iodixanol than after iohexol using Swedish, German, and French unit prices, respectively. The mean per-patient costs of treating adverse drug reactions were €371, €399, and €445 lower after iodixanol than after iohexol, using the respective unit prices (P = 0.01). Iodixanol was cost-effective compared with iohexol, with both lower costs and better effects related to fewer adverse drug reactions. Conclusions: The isosmolar contrast medium iodixanol appears to be cost-effective when compared with a low-osmolar contrast medium, iohexol, in diabetic patients with renal impairment undergoing angiography. © 2005, Elsevier Inc. • Signatures of bandlike tunneling in granular nanowires
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 72:11, s. 113411-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We explore the problem of tunneling through disorderd nanowires, comprised of a random distribution of metallic grains, by means of a many-body model that captures the essential physics of the system. The random configuration of grains gives rise to a smooth bandlike set of states that mediates current flow through the nanowires. Analytical and numerical calculations show the characteristic signature of this unusual bandlike transport to be a quadratic variation of the current as a function of the applied voltage (i.e., I similar to V-2), a variation that is clearly observed in experimental studies of Pt/C composite nanowires.
