  • Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 427:5-6, s. 257-454
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron-positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLID experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries and polarised asymmetries. The mass and width of the Z boson, m(Z) and Gamma(Z), and its couplings to fermions, for example the p parameter and the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons, are precisely measured: m(Z) = 91.1875 +/- 0.0021 GeV, Gamma(Z) = 2.4952 +/- 0.0023 GeV, rho(l) = 1.0050 +/- 0.0010, sin(2)theta(eff)(lept) = 0.23153 +/- 0.00016. The number of light neutrino species is determined to be 2.9840 +/- 0.0082, in agreement with the three observed generations of fundamental fermions. The results are compared to the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). At the Z-pole, electroweak radiative corrections beyond the running of the QED and QCD coupling constants are observed with a significance of five standard deviations, and in agreement with the Standard Model. Of the many Z-pole measurements, the forward-backward asymmetry in b-quark production shows the largest difference with respect to its SM expectation, at the level of 2.8 standard deviations. Through radiative corrections evaluated in the framework of the Standard Model, the Z-pole data are also used to predict the mass of the top quark, m(t) = 173(+10)(+13) GeV, and the mass of the W boson, m(W) = 80.363 +/- 0.032 GeV. These indirect constraints are compared to the direct measurements, providing a stringent test of the SM. Using in addition the direct measurements of m(t) and m(W), the mass of the as yet unobserved SM Higgs boson is predicted with a relative uncertainty of about 50% and found to be less than 285 GeV at 95% confidence level. • A multi-scale approach to hyperbolic evolution equations with limited smoothness
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Communications in Partial Differential Equations. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0360-5302. ; 33:6, s. 988-1017
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We discuss how techniques from multiresolution analysis and phase space transforms can be exploited in solving a general class of evolution equations with limited smoothness. We have wave propagation in media of limited smoothness in mind. The frame that appears naturally in this context belongs to the family of frames of curvelets. The construction considered here implies a full-wave description on the one hand but reveals the geometrical properties derived from the propagation of singularities on the other hand. The approach and analysis we present (i) aids in the understanding of the notion of scale in the wavefield and how this interacts with the configuration or medium, (ii) admits media of limited smoothness, viz. with Holder regularity s >= 2, and (iii) suggests a novel computational algorithm that requires solving for the mentioned geometry on the one hand and solving a matrix Volterra integral equation of the second kind on the other hand. The Volterra equation can be solved by recursionas in the computation of certain multiple scattering seriesrevealing a curvelet-curvelet interaction. We give precise estimates expressing the degree of concentration of curvelets following the propagation of singularities.

  • Prognostic value of extracapsular tumor spread for locoregional control in premenopausal patients with node-positive breast cancer treated with classical cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and fluorouracil: long-term observations from International Breast Cancer Study Group Trial VI.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of clinical oncology : official journal of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. - 0732-183X. ; 23:28, s. 7089-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: We sought to determine retrospectively whether extracapsular spread (ECS) might identify a subgroup that could benefit from radiotherapy after mastectomy, especially patients with 1 to 3 positive lymph nodes (LN1-3+). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We randomized 1,475 premenopausal women with node-positive breast cancer to three, six, or nine courses of "classical" CMF (cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and fluorouracil). After a review of all pathology forms, 933 patients (63%) had information on the presence or absence of ECS. ECS was present in 49.5%. The median follow-up was 10 years. RESULTS: In univariate analyses, ECS was associated with worse disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). In multivariate analyses adjusting for tumor size, vessel invasion, surgery type, and age group, ECS remained significant (DFS: hazard ratio, 1.61; 95% CI, 1.34 to 1.93; P < .0001; OS: 1.67; 95% CI, 1.34 to 2.08; P < .0001). However, ECS was not significant when the number of positive nodes was added. The locoregional failure rate +/- distant failure (LRF +/- distant failure) within 10 years was estimated at 19% (+/- 2%) without ECS, versus 27% (+/- 2%) with ECS. The difference was statistically significant in univariate analyses, but not after adjusting for the number of positive nodes. No independent effect of ECS on DFS, OS, or LRF could be confirmed within the subgroup of 382 patients with LN1-3+ treated with mastectomy without radiotherapy. CONCLUSION: Our results do not support an independent prognostic value of ECS, nor its use as an indication for irradiation in premenopausal patients with LN1-3+ treated with classical CMF. However, we could not examine whether extensive ECS is of prognostic importance.

  • Control of Separation on the Flap of a Three-Element High-Lift Configuration
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: 45th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit. - : AIAA. - 9781563478901
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes a joint experimental and numerical investigation of the control of the flow over the flap of a three-element high-lift configuration by means of periodic excitation. At Reynolds numbers between 0.3 ï¿œ 106 and 1 ï¿œ 106 the flow is influenced by periodic blowing or periodic blowing/suction through slots near the flap leading edge. The delay of flow separation by periodic vertical excitation could be identified in the experiments as well as numerical simulations based on the Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (URANS). As a result, the mean aerodynamic lift of this practically relevant wing configuration could be significantly enhanced. By investigating different excitation frequencies and intensities optimum control parameters could be found. The behaviour of the aerodynamic forces with varying flap deflection angle are measured on a finite swept wing. Scientific visualisation of the numerical simulations of an infinite swept wing allows a detailed analysis of the structures in this complex flow field and the effect of flow control on these.

  • Molecular basis of infantile reversible cytochrome c oxidase deficiency myopathy.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Brain : a journal of neurology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1460-2156. ; 132:Pt 11, s. 3165-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Childhood-onset mitochondrial encephalomyopathies are usually severe, relentlessly progressive conditions that have a fatal outcome. However, a puzzling infantile disorder, long known as 'benign cytochrome c oxidase deficiency myopathy' is an exception because it shows spontaneous recovery if infants survive the first months of life. Current investigations cannot distinguish those with a good prognosis from those with terminal disease, making it very difficult to decide when to continue intensive supportive care. Here we define the principal molecular basis of the disorder by identifying a maternally inherited, homoplasmic m.14674T>C mt-tRNA(Glu) mutation in 17 patients from 12 families. Our results provide functional evidence for the pathogenicity of the mutation and show that tissue-specific mechanisms downstream of tRNA(Glu) may explain the spontaneous recovery. This study provides the rationale for a simple genetic test to identify infants with mitochondrial myopathy and good prognosis.

  • Feature-based Analysis of a Multi-Parameter Flow Simulation
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proc. SimVis 2008. ; , s. 237-251
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In our work we examine a high-dimensional, massive flow data set around an airfoil using a topology-based vortex analysis. The 3D time-dependent flow depends on two additional parameters which are introduced by an active flow control technique aiming at increasing the lift by periodic blowing and suction. In particular, we study the influence of the actuation parameters frequency and intensity of air injection and show how our vortex analysis helps in understanding the underlying physics.
