  • Análisis dinámico de un eje de ferrocarril con capacidad de cambio de ancho automático

    • El objetivo de la presente tesis es la mejora de los actuales ejes de ancho variable para su circulación por vías de alta velocidad (AV) a velocidades de hasta 300km/h. En la actualidad los vehículos con ejes de ancho variable no sobrepasan los 250km/h de velocidad de servicio en vías de AV, lo que supone un claro desaprovechamiento de recursos y dificultades de gestión del tráfico para el gestor de la infraestructura a causa de las distintas velocidades punta de los diferentes trenes. Los modelos ferroviarios convencionales no tienen en cuenta la flexibilidad asociada a los ejes y suponen que éstos son lo suficientemente rígidos como para no necesitar una modelización que tenga en cuenta su deformación estructural. Sin embargo, en los ejes de ancho variable, que poseen tanto mecanismos que permiten el desplazamiento lateral de rueda respecto al cuerpo de eje como mecanismos de bloqueo de dicho desplazamiento, tienen influencia diversas holguras, rozamiento entre superficies, y componentes intermedios entre ruedas y cuerpo de eje. Estos efectos provocan una flexibilización de la conexión entre ruedas y cuerpo de eje que es necesario estudiar. Por otra parte, en el caso de los ejes de ancho variable de cuerpo de eje no rotativo sus menores solicitaciones a fatiga permiten una importante reducción del diámetro del cuerpo de eje. Esto provoca una flexibilidad adicional muy superior a la de los ejes convencionales. Para el estudio de la influencia de este aumento de flexibilidad en el comportamiento dinámico del eje, en primer lugar se determina qué tipo de modelo permite la correcta representación de los efectos presentes en los análisis dinámicos. Además, se analiza en profundidad el comportamiento del eje de ancho variable, para facilitar el posterior estudio y simplificaciones, así como identificar los componentes críticos del mecanismo. En segundo lugar se calculan las relaciones esfuerzo-deformación para los distintos componentes del sistema: conjunto de rodamientos, cuerpo de eje, mecanismos de anclaje, etc. Dichas características se introducen en un modelo multicuerpo simplificado que es capaz de representar tanto ejes de ancho variable flexibles como ejes convencionales flexibles. Por último se realiza un análisis de la influencia de dichas características en el comportamiento dinámico del vehículo, así como el grado de influencia de cada una de ellas. Además se proponen posibles mejoras del sistema para mejorar sus prestaciones a altas velocidades.

  • Robust antiferromagnetic coupling in hard-soft bi-magnetic core/shell nanoparticles

    • The growing miniaturization demand of magnetic devices is fuelling the recent interest in bi-magnetic nanoparticles as ultimate small components. One of the main goals has been to reproduce practical magnetic properties observed so far in layered systems. In this context, although useful effects such as exchange bias or spring magnets have been demonstrated in core/shell nanoparticles, other interesting key properties for devices remain elusive. Here we show a robust antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling in core/shell nanoparticles which, in turn, leads to the foremost elucidation of positive exchange bias in bi-magnetic hard-soft systems and the remarkable regulation of the resonance field and amplitude. The AFM coupling in iron oxide-manganese oxide based, soft/hard and hard/soft, core/shell nanoparticles is demonstrated by magnetometry, ferromagnetic resonance and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Monte Carlo simulations prove the consistency of the AFM coupling. This unique coupling could give rise to more advanced applications of bi-magnetic core/shell nanoparticles.

  • Global conservation outcomes depend on marine protected areas with five key features

    • In line with global targets agreed under the Convention on Biological Diversity, the number of marine protected areas (MPAs) is increasing rapidly, yet socio-economic benefits generated by MPAs remain difficult to predict and under debate(1,2). MPAs often fail to reach their full potential as a consequence of factors such as illegal harvesting, regulations that legally allow detrimental harvesting, or emigration of animals outside boundaries because of continuous habitat or inadequate size of reserve(3-5). Here we show that the conservation benefits of 87 MPAs investigated worldwide increase exponentially with the accumulation of five key features: no take, well enforced, old (>10 years), large (>100 km(2)), and isolated by deep water or sand. Using effective MPAs with four or five key features as an unfished standard, comparisons of underwater survey data from effective MPAs with predictions based on survey data from fished coasts indicate that total fish biomass has declined about two-thirds from historical baselines as a result of fishing. Effective MPAs also had twice as many large (>250 mm total length) fish species per transect, five times more large fish biomass, and fourteen times more shark biomass than fished areas. Most (59%) of the MPAs studied had only one or two key features and were not ecologically distinguishable from fished sites. Our results show that global conservation targets based on area alone will not optimize protection of marine biodiversity. More emphasis is needed on better MPA design, durable management and compliance to ensure that MPAs achieve their desired conservation value.

  • Does menopausal hormone therapy reduce myocardial infarction risk if initiated early after menopause? : A population-based case-control study

    • OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess whether the timing of menopausal hormone therapy initiation in relation to onset of menopause and hormone therapy duration is associated with myocardial infarction risk.METHODS: This study was based on the Stockholm Heart Epidemiology Program, a population-based case-control study including 347 postmenopausal women who had experienced a nonfatal myocardial infarction and 499 female control individuals matched for age and residential area. Odds ratios (with 95% CIs) for myocardial infarction were calculated using logistic regression.RESULTS: Early initiation of hormone therapy (within 10 y of onset of menopause or before age 60 y), compared with never use, was associated with an odds ratio of 0.87 (95% CI, 0.58-1.30) after adjustments for lifestyle factors, body mass index, and socioeconomic status. For late initiation of hormone therapy, the corresponding odds ratio was 0.97 (95% CI, 0.53-1.76). For hormone therapy duration of 5 years or more, compared with never use, the adjusted odds ratio was 0.64 (95% CI, 0.35-1.18). For hormone therapy duration of less than 5 years, the odds ratio was 0.97 (95% CI, 0.63-1.48).CONCLUSIONS: Neither the timing of hormone therapy initiation nor the duration of therapy is significantly associated with myocardial infarction risk.

    • Trust in software is typically achieved via stabilization efforts over long periods of use. Adaptation to changing circumstances, however, often requires substantial changes to the software. Changing a software system using standard manufacturing processes often results in quality regressions, invalidating trust. Formal methods provide a means for guaranteeing various properties of a software system that increase its trustworthiness. The HATS methodology aims to integrate formal methods for modeling changes of software systems in terms of variability and evolution, while preserving trustworthiness properties. This paper outlines how different formal methods are extended and integrated to build an industrially viable Software Product Line Engineering method for manufacturing highly adaptable and trustworthy software.

    • The structural and chemical characterization of inverted bi-magnetic MnOx(antiferromagnetic)/MnOy(ferrimagnetic) and FeOx(soft-ferrimagnetic)/MnOx(hard-ferrimagnetic) core/shell nanoparticles has been carried out by means of scanning transmission electron microscopy with electron energy loss spectroscopy analysis, (S)TEM-EELS. Quantitative EELS was applied to assess the local composition of the nanoparticles by evaluating the local Mn oxidation state based on the Mn L-3/L-2 peak intensity ratio and the Mn L-3 peak onset. The analysis allows to unambiguously distinguish the core from the shell and to determine the nature of the involved manganese oxides in both cases. The results evidence that the structure of the nanoparticles is, in fact, more complex than the one designed by the synthesis parameters.

    • The magnetic responses of two nanoparticle systems comprised of Fe3O4/gamma-Mn2O3 (soft ferrimagnetic, FM/hard FM) and Fe3O4/MnO/gamma-Mn2O3 (soft FM/antiferromagnetic, AFM/hard FM) are compared, where the MnO serves to physically decouple the FM layers. Variation in the temperature and applied field allows for Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) measurements of the magnetic moments both parallel and perpendicular to an applied field. Data for the bilayer particle indicate that the graded ferrimagnetic layers are coupled and respond to the field as a single unit. For the trilayer nanoparticles, magnetometry suggests a Curie temperature (T-C) approximate to 40 K for the outer gamma-Mn2O3 component, yet SANS reveals an increase in the magnetization associated with outer layer that is perpendicular to the applied field above T-C during magnetic reversal. This result suggests that the gamma-Mn2O3 magnetically reorients relative to the applied field as the temperature is increased above 40 K.

    • The magnetic properties of bimagnetic core/shell nanoparticles consisting of an antiferromagnetic MnO core and a ferrimagnetic passivation shell have been investigated. It is found that the phase of the passivation shell (gamma-Mn2O3 or Mn3O4) depends on the size of the nanoparticles. Structural and magnetic characterizations concur that while the smallest nanoparticles have a predominantly gamma-Mn2O3 shell, larger ones have increasing amounts of Mn3O4. A considerable enhancement of the Neel temperature, T-N, and the magnetic anisotropy of the MnO core for decreasing core sizes has been observed. The size reduction also leads to other phenomena such as persistent magnetic moment in MnO up to high temperatures and an unusual temperature behavior of the magnetic domains.
