  • How the coronavirus crisis affects citizen trust in institutions and in unknown others: Evidence from ‘the Swedish experiment’
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Political Research. - : Wiley. - 0304-4130 .- 1475-6765. ; 60:3, s. 748-760
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study how Swedish citizens updated their institutional and interpersonal trust as the corona crisis evolved from an initial phase to an acute phase in the spring of 2020. The study is based on a large web-survey panel with adult Swedes (n = 11,406) in which the same individuals were asked the same set of questions at two different time points during the coronavirus pandemic (t(0)andt(1)). The sample was self-selected but diverse (a smaller subsample, n = 1,464, was pre-stratified to be representative of the Swedish population on key demographics). We find support for the view that the corona crisis led to higher levels of institutional and interpersonal trust. Moreover, reactions were largely homogeneous across those groups that could potentially relate distantly to government authorities.

  • Why Swedes Don't Wear Face Masks During the Pandemic - A Consequence of Blindly trusting the Government
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Crisis and Risk Communication Research. - : Nicholson School of Communication, UCF. - 2576-0017 .- 2576-0025. ; 4:2, s. 335-358
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Government trust is generally helpful for societies, especially in crisis situations, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic, because governments rely on citizens to follow directives. Worldwide, with supporting evidence accumulating, a key directive has been to wear face masks. However, in Sweden, the government has questioned their usefulness. On other behavioral recommendations, such as handwashing, the government has taken a conventional path. We rely on this non-recommendation of face masks to examine the causal impact of government trust on behavior. Based on a large Swedish survey fielded during the pandemic, we find that higher government trust reduces the likelihood of wearing face masks. In contrast, higher trust increases the likelihood of handwashing. The findings qualify the conclusion about the beneficial consequences of trust.

  • Hur står sig public services förtroendekapital?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Public service: en svensk kunskapsöversikt. - Göteborg : Nordicom. - 9789188855633 ; , s. 33-55
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book details how the processes of communication are affected by the presence of a pandemic and establishes a research agenda for those effects across the broad field of communication studies. Through contributions from experts in communication subdisciplines such as crisis, organizational, interpersonal, health, intergroup, and intercultural, this book provides the reader with a comprehensive view of the emerging field of study "pandemic communication." Each chapter has four primary objectives to: (1) define critical issues for pandemic communication from its subdiscipline’s perspective, (2) examine how communication varies during pandemic(s), (3) provide examples of how pandemic(s) havefor affected communication, and (4) propose a research agenda to build pandemic communication theory.

  • To Publish or Not to Publish? Assessing Journalism Ethics in News about a Terrorist Attack
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journalism Studies. - 1461-670X. ; 22:13, s. 1814-1831
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article compares how the Swedish public and journalists assessed the ethical aspects of harmful exposure and dissemination of unverified information in news reporting of the 2017 terrorist attack in Stockholm. The analysis derives from comparable web surveys with 1092 journalists and 3881 citizens who answered identical questions about the attack. Focus is placed on ethics as an expression of journalistic practice and the influence of situational factors on ethical assessments. The findings demonstrate an overall similarity between the public’s and journalists’ assessments of ethical judgments made in the news reporting, but also notable differences. Furthermore, significant differences were found between journalists who had personal experience of reporting on the terrorist attack and those who did not. One conclusion is that the public assesses ethical decisions based on information aspects more than do journalists, while the opposite is true for considerations of personal integrity. The main contribution of this study is that it adds to previous research on the influence of organisational and individual factors by demonstrating the additional influence of situational factors on journalists’ ethical assessments.
