  • Validation of questionnaire algorithm based on repeated open application testing with the constituents of fragrance mix II : the EDEN Fragrance Study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. - : Wiley. - 0926-9959 .- 1468-3083. ; 35:8, s. 1692-1701
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: In a European study on contact allergy in the general population, it has been hypothesized that the combination of contact allergy to a fragrance together with a history indicating dermatitis at exposure and thereafter subsequent avoidance of scented products implied a diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis. Objectives: The primary aim of this study was to validate this hypothesis/algorithm. The secondary aim was to investigate whether there was any association between the outcome of the recent repeated open application test (ROAT) and the patch test reactivity. Methods: One hundred nine subjects with and without contact allergy to fragrance mix II (FM II) were recruited. Volunteers from six European dermatology clinics participated in the study including a patch test and a ROAT. Results: Twenty-four positive ROAT reactions were noted in total including 20 of those 32 with contact allergy to FM II. None of the volunteers reacted to the vehicle (P < 0.001). More individuals with a positive algorithm had positive ROATs when compared with those with a negative algorithm. However, the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.12). The lower the patch test concentration eliciting a positive test reaction, the more likely was a positive ROAT and the more likely that the positive ROAT appeared early during the investigative period. Conclusions: The algorithm used in this study was not validated but it was indicated in this ROAT setup. The stronger the patch test reactivity the more likely was a positive ROAT and the more likely it was that the positive ROAT appeared early during the application period.

  • Experimental four-qubit bound entanglement
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nature Physics. - 1745-2473 .- 1745-2481. ; 5:10, s. 748-752
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Entanglement is one of the most puzzling features of quantum theory and of great importance for the new field of quantum information. Being a peculiar form of entanglement, bound entanglement emerges in certain mixed quantum states. This form of entanglement is not distillable by local operators and classical communication. Bound-entangled states are different from both the free entangled (distillable) and separable states. Here we report on the first experimental demonstration of a four-qubit polarization bound-entangled state, the so-called Smolin state. We have fully characterized its entanglement properties. Moreover, we have realized unlocking of the entanglement protocol for this state. The special properties of the Smolin state constitute a useful quantum resource for new multiparty communication schemes.

  • In adenosine A(2B) knockouts acute treatment with inorganic nitrate improves glucose disposal, oxidative stress, and AMPK signaling in the liver
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Physiology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-042X. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rationale: Accumulating studies suggest that nitric oxide (NO) deficiency and oxidative stress are central pathological mechanisms in type 2 diabetes (T2D). Recent findings demonstrate therapeutic effects by boosting the nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway, which is an alternative pathway for NO formation. This study aimed at investigating the acute effects of inorganic nitrate on glucose and insulin signaling in adenosine A2B receptor knockout mice (A(2B)(-/-), a genetic mouse model of impaired metabolic regulation. Methods: Acute effects of nitrate treatment were investigated in aged wild-type (WT) and A(2B)(-/-) mice. One hour after injection with nitrate (0.1 mmol/kg, i.p.) or placebo, metabolic regulation was evaluated by intraperitoneal glucose and insulin tolerance tests. NADPH oxidase-mediated superoxide production and AMPK phosphorylation were measured in livers obtained from non-treated or glucose-treated mice, with or without prior nitrate injection. Plasma was used to determine insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and NO signaling. Results: A(2B)(-/-) displayed increased body weight, reduced glucose clearance, and attenuated overall insulin responses compared with age-matched WT mice. Nitrate treatment increased circulating levels of nitrate, nitrite and cGMP in the A(2B)(-/-), and improved glucose clearance. In WT mice, however, nitrate treatment did not influence glucose clearance. HOMA-IR increased following glucose injection in the A(2B)(-/-), but remained at basal levels in mice pretreated with nitrate. NADPH oxidase activity in livers from A(2B)(-/-), but not WT mice, was reduced by nitrate treatment. Livers from A(2B)(-/-) displayed reduced AMPK phosphorylation compared with WT mice, and this was increased by nitrate treatment. Finally, injection with the anti-diabetic agent metformin induced similar therapeutic effects in the A(2B)(-/-) as observed with nitrate. Conclusion: The A(2B)(-/-) mouse is a genetic mouse model of metabolic syndrome. Acute treatment with nitrate improved the metabolic profile in it, at least partly via reduction in oxidative stress and improved AMPK signaling in the liver.

  • Diabetes and Hypertension Consistently Predict the Presence and Extent of Coronary Artery Calcification in Symptomatic Patients : A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Molecular Sciences. - Basel, Switzerland : MDPI. - 1661-6596 .- 1422-0067. ; 17:9
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The relationship of conventional cardiovascular risk factors (age, gender, ethnicity, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, hypertension, obesity, exercise, and the number of risk factors) to coronary artery calcification (CAC) presence and extent has never before been assessed in a systematic review and meta-analysis.Methods: We included only English language studies that assessed at least three conventional risk factors apart from age, gender, and ethnicity, but excluded studies in which all patients had another confirmed condition such as renal disease. Results: In total, 10 studies, comprising 15,769 patients, were investigated in the systematic review and seven studies, comprising 12,682 patients, were included in the meta-analysis, which demonstrated the importance of diabetes and hypertension as predictors of CAC presence and extent, with age also predicting CAC presence. Male gender, dyslipidaemia, family history of coronary artery disease, obesity, and smoking were overall not predictive of either CAC presence or extent, despite dyslipidaemia being a key risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD).Conclusion: Diabetes and hypertension consistently predict the presence and extent of CAC in symptomatic patients.

  • Building the nodal nuclear data dependences in a many-dimensional state-variable space
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Annals of Nuclear Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0306-4549 .- 1873-2100. ; 38:7, s. 1569-1577
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present new methods for building the polynomial-regression based nodal nuclear data models. Thedata models can reflect dependences on a large number of state variables, and they can consider varioushistory effects. Suitable multivariate polynomials that approximate the nodal data dependences are identifiedefficiently in an iterative manner. The history effects are analysed using a new sampling scheme forlattice calculations where the traditional base burnup and branch calculations are replaced by a largenumber of diverse burnup histories. The total number of lattice calculations is controlled so that the datamodels are built to a required accuracy.

  • An efficient parallel computing scheme for Monte Carlo criticality calculations
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Annals of Nuclear Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0306-4549 .- 1873-2100. ; 36:8, s. 1276-1279
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The existing parallel computing schemes for Monte Carlo criticality calculations suffer from a low efficiency when applied on many processors. We suggest a new fission matrix based scheme for efficient parallel computing. The results are derived from the fission matrix that is combined from all parallel simulations. The scheme allows for a practically ideal parallel scaling as no communication among the parallel simulations is required, and inactive cycles are not needed. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd.
