  • Direct evidence of defect annihilation during structural relaxation of amorphous indium phosphide
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121. ; 68:11: 115204
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements have been used to characterize the low-temperature, thermally induced structural relaxation of amorphous InP. We show reductions in both chemical and structural disorder associated with homopolar and heteropolar bonding, respectively, are operative during structural relaxation of this amorphous compound semiconductor. The latter is analogous to that observed in the amorphous elemental semiconductors Ge and Si. Though a reduction in homopolar bonding accompanies structural relaxation, the fully relaxed, minimum-energy configuration of the amorphous phase still retains chemical disorder.

  • New techniques for determining the extent of crosslinking in coatings
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Progress in organic coatings. - 0300-9440 .- 1873-331X. ; 43, s. 85-98
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Crosslinking reactions in latex and alkyd systems offer an attractive way to achieve film formation at low temperatures while also achieving a final hard coating. There is a strong need for techniques to characterise the extent of crosslinking as a function of time and depth in this type of coating. Here magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (using a magnet specifically designed for coatings) and a quartz crystal microbalance with energy dissipation are both used as non-invasive techniques for this purpose. The crosslinking in alkyd films containing a cobalt drier is found to be non-uniform with depth. In a latex, crosslinking depth profiles are likewise non-uniform, most likely as a result of oxygen inhibition of the initiator

  • Insulating surface layer on single crystal K3C60
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal B. Condensed Matter and Complex Systems. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6028. ; 41:4, s. 435-438
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using angle-dependent photoemission spectra of core and valence levels we show that metallic, single crystal K3C60 is terminated by an insulating or weakly-conducting surface layer. We attribute this to the effects of strong intermolecular correlations combined with the average surface charge state. Several controversies on the electronic structure are thereby resolved.

  • Excited-state charge transfer dynamics in systems of aromatic adsorbates on TiO2 studied with resonant core techniques
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 119:23, s. 12462-12472
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resonant core spectroscopies are applied to a study of the excited electron transfer dynamics on a low-femtosecond time scale in systems of aromatic molecules (isonicotinic acid and bi-isonicotinic acid) adsorbed on a rutile TiO2(110) semiconductor surface. Depending on which adsorbate state is excited, the electron is either localized on the adsorbate in an excitonic effect, or delocalizes rapidly into the substrate in less than 5 fs (3 fs) for isonicotinic acid (bi-isonicotinic acid). The results are obtained by the application of a variant of resonant photoemission spectroscopy. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

  • Depth profiles of polymer mobility during the film formation of a latex dispersion undergoing photoinitiated cross-linking
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Macromolecules. - 0024-9297 .- 1520-5835. ; 33, s. 8443-8452
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first use of one-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to provide information on concentration and molecular mobility (as revealed by the spin-spin relaxation time, T2) as a function of depth into cross-linking latex coatings during their film formation is reported. These materials are of interest because they provide hard, chemically resistant coatings and because, being waterborne, they do not release organic solvents into the atmosphere. MRI profiles, with a pixel resolution of 9 m, are obtained at regular time intervals from a poly(vinyl acetate-co-ethylene) latex dispersion containing a difunctional cross-linker and a photoinitiator. In this complete formulation, MRI reveals that the rate of cross-linking is fastest in the middle regions of the coating. This result is explained by considering the combined effects of light scattering in the turbid latex, the inhibition of the free-radical cross-linking reaction by initial molecular oxygen, and the further ingress of oxygen from the atmosphere. A numerical model, using measured and known parameters, predicts MRI profiles that are in good qualitative agreement with those found experimentally.
