  • Performance of Pastry in a Heterogeneous System
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Fourth IEEE International Conference on Peer-to-Peer computing.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we study how Pastry performs in a heterogeneous network environment of varying size. The large traffic overhead for management traffic makes the overlay nonfunctional if it grows too large. This can be circumvented by partitioning the routing tables at the cost of increased path lengths and response times.

  • A virtualized link layer with support for indirection
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: ACM SIGCOMM Workshop on Future Directions in Network Architecture (FDNA'04). - Portland : ACM New York, NY, USA. ; , s. 28-34
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current Internet today hosts several extensions for indirection like Mobile IP, NAT, proxies, route selection and various network overlays. At the same time, user-controlled indirection mechanisms foreseen in the Internet architecture (e.g., loose source routing) cannot be used to implement these extensions. This is a consequence of the Internet's indirection semantics not being rich enough at some places and too rich at others. In order to achieve a more uniform handling of indirection we propose SelNet, a network architecture that is based on a virtualized link layer with explicit indirection support. Indirection in this context refers to user-controlled steering of packet flows through the network. We discuss the architectural implications of such a scheme and report on implementation progress.

  • LUNAR over Bluetooth
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 4:th Scandinavian Workshop on Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We describe the porting of the LUNAR ad hoc routing protocol to Bluetooth. LUNAR is an ad hoc routing protocol designed for simplicity, targeting the ad hoc scenario of about a dozen nodes and a maximum of three hops. We believe that within this area, ad hoc networking is currently of most value. Due to the simplicity of LUNAR it is well-suited to a variety of devices where some are very resource constrained. Previously we have ported a version of the LUNAR protocol, called LUNAR, to run on the Lego Mindstorm RCX. This paper describes the process undergone to get LUNAR running over the Bluetooth technology. One of the rationales behind this work is the large amount of Bluetooth-enabled devices such as laptops, PDAs and cell phones. Typically ad hoc routing protocols are run over broadcast based radio technologies such as IEEE 802.11b. Bluetooth, however, contains a large amount of application-speci c functionality in the actual hardware module itself. This functionality does not necessarily lend itself well to the demands of an ad hoc networking protocol. The outline of the paper is as follows: We rst describe the LUNAR protocol and the relevant functionality of Bluetooth and then discuss the issues surrounding the porting process to the Bluetooth technology. The implementation itself is then described and some results presented. We close the paper with some discussions of our experiences.

  • LUNAR - A Lightweight Underlay Network Ad-hoc Routing Protocol and Implementation
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Next Generation Teletraffic and Wired/Wireless Advanced Networking (NEW2AN'04). - 952151132X ; , s. 300-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we describe LUNAR, a lean and efficient routing protocol for wireless ad hoc networks. We report on its implementation, on performance comparisons and on a formal validation result. The protocol departs in several ways from standard ad hoc routing protocols: it does not feature route repair, route caching, route maintenance or packet salvation. Nevertheless it closely matches the performance of AODV in settings inside of the "ad hoc horizon". We discuss the philosophy of LUNAR, report on several ports including versions for Windows and a stripped down μLUNAR capable of running inside a microcontroller and operating over infrared or Bluetooth.

  • LUNAR: Lightweight Underlay Network Ad-hoc Routing
  • 2003
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper we present an new ad hoc routing system based upon simple principles regarding the routing strategy and the implementation approach. In the routing area we (re-)introduce the end-to-end principle, letting the communicating end nodes make the decisions concerning the behaviour of intermediate nodes. We adopt a routing strategy that is a mixture of on-demand and pro-active routing in order to minimize the possible down-times of communication paths. Implementation-wise we use explicit “resolution commands” sent to neighbour nodes to provide LUNAR functionality. A freely available implementation has been produced that includes auto-configuration of IP network addresses and default gateway routing, making LUNAR a fully self-configuring ad-hoc routing solution which supports both unicast and broadcast styles of communication.
