    • The complete three-body correlation pictures are experimentally reconstructed for the two-proton decays of the Be-6 and (45)e ground states. We are able to see qualitative similarities and differences between these decays. They demonstrate very good agreement with the predictions of a theoretical three-body cluster model. Validity of the theoretical methods for treatment of the three-body Coulombic decays of this class is thus established by the broad range of lifetimes and nuclear masses spanned by these cases. Implementations for decay dynamics and nuclear structure of 2p emitters are discussed. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    • Three-body correlations for the ground-state decay of the lightest two-proton emitter Be-6 are studied both theoretically and experimentally. Theoretical studies are performed in a three-body hyperspherical-harmonics cluster model. In the experimental studies, the ground state of Be-6 was formed following the alpha decay of a C-10 beam inelastically excited through interactions with Be and C targets. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment is obtained demonstrating the existence of complicated correlation patterns that can elucidate the structure of Be-6 and, possibly, of the A = 6 isobars.

  • Three-body correlations in electromagnetic dissociation of Borromean nuclei: The He-6 case

    • Dissociation of He-6 on a lead target has been studied at 240 MeV/u. The four-momenta of the two neutrons in coincidence with alpha-particles have been measured and used to reconstruct the three-body energy and angular correlations in the final state. For the first time, three-body correlations were included in the analysis of the He-6 dissociation data, and compared with calculations assuming a dipole mode for the electromagnetic dissociation. In addition, the experimental data have been analyzed using a series expansion of the final transition amplitude into hyperspherical functions, showing the importance of both nn and alpha n final-state interactions. It is shown that the dissociation process is governed by a transition of one neutron from the p-shell in the 6He ground state to the s-shell in the continuum further indicating that the role of the transition through an intermediate He-5(3/2(-)) state is more important than expected.   • Exploring interactive effects on genes and environments in etiology of individual differences in reading comprehension

    • It is established that reading and reading-related processes are heritable; genes thus play an important role in the foundation of individual differences in reading. In this article, we focus on one facet of reading–comprehension. Comprehension is a higher order cognitive skill that requires many other cognitive processes for it to unfold completely and successfully. One such process is executive functioning, which has been associated with genetic variation in the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene. Genotypes and haplotypes of four single nucleotide polymorphisms in COMT were investigated in 179 incarcerated adolescent delinquents. Four hierarchical logistic regression models predicting the presence/absence of comprehension difficulties were fitted to the data; genetic variation in COMT and the presence/absence of maternal rejection were investigated as main effects and as effects acting interactively. Three out of four interaction terms were found to be important predictors of individual differences in comprehension. These findings were supported by the results of the haplotype analyses, in which the four investigated polymorphisms were considered simultaneously.

    • The current situation in the theory of three-body decay and experimental advances are briefly overviewed. The integral formula for decay widths of three-body states is introduced. Theoretical approach with a simplified Hamiltonian allows a semianalytical treatment of the process. The problem of the width of the first excited 3/2- state of 17Ne is resolved. The qualitative consequences of the model for simplified approaches are discussed. These include a better understanding of the diproton decay approximation and an introduction of a corrected "R-matrix" formula for three-body width. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.

    • Three-body decays of resonant states are studied using integral formulas for decay widths. The theoretical approach with a simplified Hamiltonian allows semianalytical treatment of the problem. The model is applied to decays of the first excited 3/2- state of 17Ne and the 3/2- ground state of 45Fe. The convergence of the three-body hyperspherical model calculations to the exact result for widths and energy distributions are studied. The theoretical results for 17Ne and 45Fe are updated, and uncertainties of the derived values are discussed in detail. Correlations for the decay of the 17Ne 3/2- state are also studied.
