    • A new method for determining the temporal evolution of plasma rotation is reported in this work. The method is based upon the detection of two different portions of the spectral profile of a plasma impurity line, using a monochromator with two photomultipliers installed at the exit slits. The plasma rotation velocity is determined by the ratio of the two detected signals. The measured toroidal rotation velocities of C III (4647.4 angstrom) and C VI (5290.6 angstrom), at different radial positions in TCABR discharges, show good agreement, within experimental uncertainty, with previous results (Severo et al 2003 Nucl. Fusion 43 1047). In particular, they confirm that the plasma core rotates in the direction opposite to the plasma current, while near the plasma edge (r/a > 0.9) the rotation is in the same direction. This technique was also used to investigate the dependence of toroidal rotation on the poloidal position of gas puffing. The results show that there is no dependence for the plasma core, while for plasma edge (r/a > 0.9) some dependence is observed.

  • Weak D type 2 is the most prevalent weak D type in Portugal

    • The weak D phenotype is the most common D variant, with a frequency of 0.2-1% in Caucasian individuals. There are several weak D types, with different frequencies in European countries, which may pose serologic problems and have the potential for alloimmunization. Samples from Portuguese individuals were tested for RhD by two or three distinct monoclonal and oligoclonal antisera, in direct agglutination tests. When discrepant results were observed, samples were tested with panels of monoclonal anti-D by LISS-indirect antigobulin test. Cases that reacted weakly with IgM but positive with IgG anti-D were analysed by PCR-sequence-specific primers and real-time PCR. Ninety-nine samples were referred after being characterized as weak D. This genotype was recognized, with a preponderance of weak D type 2 (63.6%) over type 1 (16.2%) and 3 (14.1%). The high incidence of weak D type 2 in our population is in marked contrast to studies performed in other European populations and might be due to our sample selection criteria or ethnic variation. There are advantages in genotyping serologically depressed D samples to avoid the waste of D-negative RBC units and the use of immunoglobulin in pregnant women, who have no risk of alloimmunization.

  • Network analysis reveals contrasting effects of intraspecific competition on individual versus population diets

    • Optimal foraging theory predicts that individuals should become more opportunistic when intraspecific competition is high and preferred resources are scarce. This density-dependent diet shift should result in increased diet breadth for individuals as they add previously unused prey to their repertoire. As a result, the niche breadth of the population as a whole should increase. In a recent study, R. Svanback and D. I. Bolnick confirmed that intraspecific competition led to increased population diet breadth in threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). However, individual diet breadth did not expand as resource levels declined. Here, we present a new method based on complex network theory that moves beyond a simple measure of diet breadth, and we use the method to reexamine the stickleback experiment. This method reveals that the population as a whole added new types of prey as stickleback density was increased. However, whereas foraging theory predicts that niche expansion is achieved by individuals accepting new prey in addition to previously preferred prey, we found that a subset of individuals ceased to use their previously preferred prey, even though other members of their population continued to specialize on the original prey types. As a result, populations were subdivided into groups of ecologically similar individuals, with diet variation among groups reflecting phenotype-dependent changes in foraging behavior as prey density declined. These results are consistent with foraging theory if we assume that quantitative trait variation among consumers affects prey preferences, and if cognitive constraints prevent individuals from continuing to use their formerly preferred prey while adding new prey.

    • The theory of IR-X-ray pump-probe spectroscopy beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation is developed and applied to the study of the dynamics of intramolecular proton transfer in glyoxalmonoxime leading to the formation of the tautomer 2-nitrosoethenol. Due to the IR pump pulses the molecule gains sufficient energy to promote a proton to a weakly bound well. A femtosecond X-ray pulse snapshots the wave packet route and, hence, the dynamics of the proton transfer. The glyoxalmonoxime molecule contains two chemically nonequivalent oxygen atoms that possess distinct roles in the hydrogen bond, a hydrogen donor and an acceptor. Core ionizations of these form two intersecting core-ionized states, the vibronic coupling between which along the OH stretching mode partially delocalizes the core hole, resulting in a hopping of the core hole from one site to another. This, in turn, affects the dynamics of the proton transfer in the core-ionized state. The quantum dynamical simulations of X-ray photoelectron spectra of glyoxalmonoxime driven by strong IR pulses demonstrate the general applicability of the technique for studies of intramolecular proton transfer in systems with vibronic coupling.
