  • Designing (for) Presence
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Communicating (by) design. - Ghent : Hogeschool voor Wetenschap & Kunst School of Architecture Sint-Lucas. - 9789081323802 ; , s. 431-439

    • Who are the presence designers of today – and who takes responsibility for designing mediated spaces, if not the architect? This paper addresses the need for a revised set of conceptual tools for the design of video mediated environments. Such hybrid spaces, constituted of both real and virtual spaces, demand a resolution of contrary experiential and spatial concepts. One example is the mediated workplace of a psychiatrist, who receives and treats her patients remotely. Another example is a mediated museum, providing an extension to an archaeological excavation site, thus allowing visitors to interact and to be guided remotely, in real-time. In both cases, participants at each location experience a sense of presence negotiated through forms of knowledge in dialogic interaction; and they also share material and immaterial spaces – from designs based on a juxtaposition of space(s) enabling mutual gaze, a concept used in reference to conventional visual arts and spatial design. The paper argues that the concept of presence is currently negotiated in a multidisciplinary interaction between users and technicians, who can be named designers, but who often lack adequate conceptual tools to handle the spatial qualities at hand. Presence research is currently dominated by cognitive science and communication technology, but there is potential for a transdisciplinary design-driven approach where media technology meets architectural design; and where spatial and visual conceptual tools, derived from visual and performative art and design practices, may apply.

  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Based on a case-study where the Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm, Sweden was extended to an archaeological excavation site, this paper addresses the potential for increased public access to cultural heritage sites by means of video mediated communications and outreach activities. A recently formed interdisciplinary research group representing skills in designing mediated environments as well as public archaeology have carried out the study in the summer of 2008. A “Mediated Window” was designed for the occasion, enabling visitors to remotely experience presence and interact between two locations, thus creating an architectural, mediated extension of space. Preliminary results confirm that presence in mediated spaces is to a high degree dependent on eye contact, can be achieved inexpensively but that many different design variables and illusory techniques borrowed from film, architecture and theatre must be addressed in designing presence. The paper argues that such new design contexts require combined skills in architectural design, user interaction and media technology. Results also show that large numbers of visitors, but also new categories of visitors, can be reached when mediated communication is applied to cultural heritage contexts, in combination with public learning activities outside museum buildings.

  • Mediated Mingling
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Poster  and design for Mediated Mingling was carried out as part of the ‘Mediated Spaces’ project, KTH 2008 (Project Leader Charlie Gullström). Two different scientific conferences took place simultaneously in Stockholm in October 2008: one at the Grand Hotel and another at KTH. In order to enable social interaction between participants who would attend either conference, the conference venues were mediated. The Grand Hotel conference eChallenges was held 22-24 October. This is an annual conference in the field of information and communication technology which drew 500 participants and included 270 presentations from 35 countries. A magnificent ballroom called ‘Spegelsalen’ had been allocated for poster exhibitions, networking, coffee and lunch breaks. This was considered a suitable space for mediated mingling across time and space. The Nordic Creative Commons Conference at KTH 22-23 October included 45 researchers. The conference venue was Sydöstra Galleriet, a large space that allows for formal sessions as well as informal lunch and coffee breaks. The eChallenges e-2008 Conference takes place in the Grand Hotel, Stockholm. This is the eighteenth in a series of Annual Conferences supported by the European Commission, which regularly attracts over 650 delegates from leading commercial, government and research organisations around the world to share knowledge and experience, lessons learnt and good practice in the areas of ICT for Networked Enterprise & RFID, eGovernment & eDemocracy, eHealth, Collaborative Working Environments, Technology Enhanced Learning and ICT Skills, Knowledge and Content Technologies, Security and Identity Management, GRID and Mobility.

  • Mediated Museum
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: The Best in Heritage 200. ; , s. 74-78
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on a case study where the Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm, Sweden, was extended to an archaeological excavation site, this paper addresses the potential for increased public access to cultural heritage sites by means of video-mediated communications and outreach activities. During two weeks in the summer of 2008 the Stockholm Art and Industry Fair of 1897 was excavated as part of a collaborative process between archaeologists and the general public. A “Mediated Window” was designed which enabled visitors to remotely experience presence and to interact between the museum and the excavation site, thus creating an architectural, mediated extension of space. The case study confirmed that mutual gaze is important to the experience of presence and that a combination of architectural and technical design is required to fully support this experience. The mediated museum extension attracted large numbers of visitors, including new categories of visitors who were less likely to visit the museum. The study showed that a mediated extension, in combination with outdoor public learning activities and participation, can evoke an interest in modern cultural heritage and promote public dialogue in such contexts.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
