  • 3D-thermal modelling of a bifacial agrivoltaic system: a photovoltaic module perspective

    • This study presents a 3D computational fluid dynamic model to evaluate the temperature distribution and energy performances of a vertical bifacial photovoltaic module for agrivoltaic applications. This last is compared to a conventionally tilted bifacial photovoltaic module for ground-mounted applications. The simulations are performed in SolidWorks Flow Simulation® and validated with measured data gathered from the first experimental agrivoltaic system in Sweden. Additionally, four more simulations scenarios were defined to compare the performances of vertically mounted and conventionally tilted bifacial photovoltaic modules under different operating conditionsThe validation of the computational fluid dynamic model shows that the model tends to underestimate the readings performed with the thermal camera in the order of 3°C to 4°C for the vertical bifacial PV module. The comparison of the results obtained from the computational fluid dynamic model with existing models available in literature shows a good agreement. The comparison of the heat distribution from the computational fluid dynamic model and the thermal images also shows a good agreement. In all the scenarios investigated, the vertical bifacial photovoltaic module's overall efficiency was higher than that of the ground-mounted module due to lower average operating temperatures. The use of the computational fluid dynamic approach for studying the performance of a single photovoltaic module showed promising results that can be extended to study the system performance and microclimatic conditions.

  • A Guide to Carrying Out a Phylogenomic Target Sequence Capture Project

    • High-throughput DNA sequencing techniques enable time- and cost-effective sequencing of large portions of the genome. Instead of sequencing and annotating whole genomes, many phylogenetic studies focus sequencing effort on large sets of pre-selected loci, which further reduces costs and bioinformatic challenges while increasing coverage. One common approach that enriches loci before sequencing is often referred to as target sequence capture. This technique has been shown to be applicable to phylogenetic studies of greatly varying evolutionary depth. Moreover, it has proven to produce powerful, large multi-locus DNA sequence datasets suitable for phylogenetic analyses. However, target capture requires careful considerations, which may greatly affect the success of experiments. Here we provide a simple flowchart for designing phylogenomic target capture experiments. We discuss necessary decisions from the identification of target loci to the final bioinformatic processing of sequence data. We outline challenges and solutions related to the taxonomic scope, sample quality, and available genomic resources of target capture projects. We hope this review will serve as a useful roadmap for designing and carrying out successful phylogenetic target capture studies.

    • Background The acceptance of ABO-incompatible (ABOi) liver grafts will expand the donor pool for a patient in urgent need for a liver transplantation (LT). Here we report our results with emergency ABOi DD (deceased donor) LT using rituximab and antigen specific immunoadsorption. Patients and Methods 2009 to 2019 we performed 20 ABOi DD LTs (adults n = 17, children n = 3) for patients in urgent need for a LT. Immunosuppression consisted of rituximab (n = 20) and basiliximab (n = 15) or anti-thymocyte globuline (n = 4), intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG; n = 6), tacrolimus, prednisolone and mycophenolate mofetil. Fifteen patients were treated with IA (n = 14) or both IA and plasmapheresis (PP; n = 1) pre-transplant and 18 patients were treated with IA (n = 15) or both IA and PP (n = 3) post-transplant. The median pre-transplant MELD- score was 40 (range 18-40). Patient and graft survival and complications were compared to a 1:4 case matched control group of ABO-identical or compatible (ABOid/c) DDLT. Results The 1-, 3- and 5-year patient and graft survival rates were 85, 85 and 78% for the ABOi recipients and not significantly different compared to ABOid/c controls. Only one ABOi patient developed antibody-mediated rejection. Conclusion Patient and graft survival after emergency ABOi DDLT using rituximab and immunoadorption was equal to ABOid/DDLT. ABOi DD LT was a successful approach to expand the donor pool for patients in urgent need for a liver graft.

  • Keeping pace with forestry : Multi-scale conservation in a changing production forest matrix

    • The multi-scale approach to conserving forest biodiversity has been used in Sweden since the 1980s, a period defined by increased reserve area and conservation actions within production forests. However, two thousand forest-associated species remain on Sweden's red-list, and Sweden's 2020 goals for sustainable forests are not being met. We argue that ongoing changes in the production forest matrix require more consideration, and that multi-scale conservation must be adapted to, and integrated with, production forest development. To make this case, we summarize trends in habitat provision by Sweden's protected and production forests, and the variety of ways silviculture can affect biodiversity. We discuss how different forestry trajectories affect the type and extent of conservation approaches needed to secure biodiversity, and suggest leverage points for aiding the adoption of diversified silviculture. Sweden's long-term experience with multi-scale conservation and intensive forestry provides insights for other countries trying to conserve species within production landscapes.

    • BackgroundTo minimize the risk of perioperative hypothermia, it is recommended that healthcare professionals be familiar with heat conservation measures and use passive and active warming methods, in line with international guidelines. However, there is a low level of adherence perioperatively to the use of heat conservation measures. To understand why, there is a need to capture the nurse anesthetists' perspective. The aim is to describe nurse anesthetists' perceptions of heat conservation measures in connection with surgery.MethodsAn inductive descriptive design with a phenomenographic approach was chosen. A total of 19 nurse anesthetists participated and were interviewed. Data were analyzed according to Larsson and Holmstrom's phenomenographic seven-step model.ResultsSix ways of understanding the phenomenon heat conservation measures in connection with surgery were found: the preventive, the useable, the untenable, the caring, the adaptive, and the routine care approach. These approaches were related to each other in a flexible way, allowing for several to co-exist at the same time, depending on the situation.ConclusionsNurse anesthetists want to prevent the patients' heat loss and maintain normothermia, regardless of the type of surgery. This willingness, motivation, and intention enable the use of heat conservation measures. However, there are perceptions that have an impact, such as doubts and uncertainty, access, time and financial constraints, preconditions, routines or habits, and lack of availability of education/training. These barriers will require support from an organizational level to promote lifelong education and guidelines. As well as offer education at the nurse anesthetists' program.

    • Background Forensic psychiatric care (FPC) is characterized by the complex interaction between mental illness and the crime the patient has committed. For patient care, this means that male nursing staff are often assigned a superior position within FPC, while female nursing staff are presented as especially suited for providing the care itself. The overall aim was, from a gender perspective, to map patterns of patient care within FPC. Method: The dissertation is based on four qualitative studies. One is a literature study, while the other three adopt an ethnographic approach. The data in Study I consists of peer-reviewed articles that were theoretically analyzed. The Data in Study II consists of interviews that were analyzed by discourse psychology. The data in Study III consists of four focus groups. A thematic analysis was performed on the data. In Study IV, the data consists of observations, field notes and interviews, which were analyzed by thematic analysis. Results: Study I show that health in FPC can be perceived as a complex interplay between protecting society, constructions of masculinity and the physical body. Study II illustrates that nursing staff’s talk about patient care should not be separated from structures framing FPC. Study III illuminates that when nursing staff ignore gender in FPC, this may render invisible patients’ unique health needs linked to their life situation. Study IV reveals a pattern in how protecting society is constructed as superior to providing care. This result can be linked to a gender order that results in unequal conditions for nursing staff’s patient care. Conclusion: The results show how the dual goals are intertwined with nursing staff’s gender values, which affect the nurse-patient relationship and health-promoting activities. By constructing protection of society as having higher priority than care, a gender order is maintained that justifies categorization of patients. Failure to pay attention to the interaction between the dual goals and gender may lead to nursing staff overlooking patients’ individual situations and health needs.
