  • A multi-sampling approach for smoke behavior in real-time graphics
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: SIGRAD 2006: The Annual SIGRAD Conference. - Linköping : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 9185643173 ; , s. 17-21
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Smoke simulation is a key feature of serious gaming applications for fire-fighting professionals. A perfect visual appearance is not of paramount importance, the behavior of the smoke must however closely resemble its natural counterpart for successful adoption of the application. We therefore suggest a hybrid grid/particle based architecture for smoke simulation that uses a cheap multi-sampling technique for controlling smoke behavior. This approach is simple enough for it to be implemented in current generation game engines, and uses techniques that are very suitable for GPU implementation, thus enabling the use of hardware acceleration for the smoke simulation.

  • A Driving Simulator Based on Video Game Technology
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: SIGRAD 2006: The Annual SIGRAD Conference. - Linköping : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 9185643173 ; , s. 39-43
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the design and architecture of a mid-range driving simulator developed at the University of Skövde. The aim is to use the simulator as a platform for studies of serious games. The usage of video game technology and software has been a central design principle. The core of the simulator is a complete car surrounded by seven screens. Each screen is handled by a standard PC, typically used for computer games, and the projection on the screens is handled by budget LCD-projectors. The use of consumer electronics, standard game technology and limited motion feedback makes this simulator relatively inexpensive. In addition, the architecture is scalable and allows for using commercial video games in the simulator. Observations from a set of experiments conducted in the simulator are presented in this paper. In these experiments driving school students were instructed to freely explore a driving game specifically designed for the simulator platform. The result shows that the level of realism is sufficient and that the entertainment value was considered to be high. This opens the possibilities to employ and use driving simulators for a wider set of applications. Our current research focuses on its use with serious games for traffic education.

  • SIDH : A Game-Based Architecture for a Training Simulator
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Computer Games Technology. - : Hindawi Publishing Corporation. - 1687-7047 .- 1687-7055.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Game-based simulators, sometimes referred to as "lightweight" simulators, have benefits such as flexible technology and economic feasibility. In this article, we extend the notion of a game-based simulator by introducing multiple screen view and physical interaction. These features are expected to enhance immersion and fidelity. By utilizing these concepts we have constructed a training simulator for breathing apparatus entry. Game hardware and software have been used to produce the application. More important, the application itself is deliberately designed to be a game. Indeed, one important design goal is to create an entertaining and motivating experience combined with learning goals in order to create a serious game. The system has been evaluated in cooperation with the Swedish Rescue Services Agency to see which architectural features contribute to perceived fidelity. The modes of visualization and interaction as well as level design contribute to the usefulness of the system.

  • A Novel Approach for Measuring Catalytic Activity of Planar Model Catalysts in the Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell Environment
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Electrochemical Society. - : The Electrochemical Society. - 0013-4651. ; 153:4, s. A724-A730
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction on nanostructured supported platinum electrodes is measured using a newly developed solid-state polymer electrolyte electrochemical cell. Measurements were made on three types of catalytic surfaces on glassy carbon supports: nanostructured model electrodes prepared by colloidal lithography, a thin thermally evaporated Pt film, and a pure glassy carbon surface. Measurements in nitrogen and oxygen at several different humidities were performed at 60 degrees C in a fuel-cell-like environment. Lowering humidity showed a higher Tafel slope at high potentials for oxygen reduction on the nanostructured catalyst. Good agreement between the electrochemical active area from the hydrogen adsorption peaks and the catalytic area determined from scanning electron microscopy images was found. No significant change of the electrochemically active area with humidity could be found. Double-layer capacitance and oxygen reduction currents increased with increased humidification temperatures.

  • Nanometer-thick films of titanium oxide acting as electrolyte in the polymer electrolyte fuel cell
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Electrochimica Acta. - : Elsevier BV. - 0013-4686 .- 1873-3859. ; 52:12, s. 4239-4245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 0–18 nm-thick titanium, zirconium and tantalum oxide films are thermally evaporated on Nafion 117 membranes, and used as thin spacer electrolyte layers between the Nafion and a 3 nm Pt catalyst film. Electrochemical characterisation of the films in terms of oxygen reduction activity, high frequency impedance and cyclic voltammetry in nitrogen is performed in a fuel cell at 80 ◦C and full humidification. Titanium oxide films with thicknesses up to 18 nm are shown to conduct protons, whereas zirconium oxide and tantalum oxide block proton transport already at a thickness of 1.5 nm. The performance for oxygen reduction is higher for a bi-layered film of 3 nm platinum on 1.5 or 18 nm titanium oxide, than for a pure 3 nm platinum film with no spacer layer. The improvement in oxygen reduction performance is ascribed to a higher active surface area of platinum, i.e. no beneficial effect of combining platinum with zirconium, tantalum or titanium oxides on the intrinsic oxygen reduction activityis seen. The results suggest that TiO2 may be used as electrolyte in fuel cell electrodes, and that low-temperature proton exchange fuel cells could be possible using TiO2 as electrolyte.

  • Efficient and non-denaturing membrane solubilization combined with enrichment of membrane protein complexes by detergent/polymer aqueous two-phase partitioning for proteome analysis
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chromatography A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0021-9673. ; 1122:1-2, s. 35-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is of central interest in membrane proteomics to establish methods that combine efficient solubilization with enrichment of proteins and intact protein complexes. We have investigated the quantitative and qualitative solubilization efficiency of five commercially available detergents using mitochondria from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as model system. Combining the zwitterionic detergent Zwittergent 3-10 and the non-ionic detergent Triton X-114 resulted in a complementary solubilization of proteins, which was similar to that of the anionic detergent sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The subsequent removal of soluble proteins by detergent/polymer two-phase system partitioning was further enhanced by addition of SDS and increasing pH. A large number of both integral and peripheral membrane protein subunits from mitochondrial membrane protein complexes were identified in the detergent phase. We suggest that the optimized solubilization protocol in combination with detergent/polymer two-phase partitioning is a mild and efficient method for initial enrichment of membrane proteins and membrane protein complexes in proteomic studies. • 2008
  • Ingår i: Methods in Molecular Biology. - Totowa, NJ : Humana Press. - 1940-6029. ; 424, s. 403-412
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Methods that combine efficient solubilization with enrichment of proteins and intact protein complexes are of central interest in current membrane proteomics. We have developed methods based on nondenaturing detergent extraction of yeast mitochondrial membrane proteins followed by enrichment of hydrophobic proteins in aqueous two-phase system. Combining the zwitterionic detergent Zwittergent 3-10 and the nonionic detergent Triton X-114 results in a complementary solubilization of proteins, which is similar to that of the anionic detergent sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) but with the important advantage of being nondenaturing. Detergent/polymer two-phase system partitioning offers removal of soluble proteins that can be further improved by manipulation of the driving forces governing protein distribution between the phases. Integral and peripheral membrane protein subunits from intact membrane protein complexes partition to the detergent phase while soluble proteins are found in the polymer phase. An optimized solubilization protocol is presented in combination with detergent/polymer two-phase partitioning as a mild and efficient method for initial enrichment of membrane proteins and membrane protein complexes in proteomic studies.

    • Identification and characterization of membrane proteins is of increasing importance in modern proteomic studies. It is of central interest to have access to methods that combine efficient solubilization with enrichment of proteins and intact protein complexes. Separation methods have been developed based on nondenaturing detergent extraction of yeast mitochondrial membrane proteins followed by enrichment of hydrophobic proteins in aqueous two-phase system. Detergent/polymer two-phase system partitioning offers removal of soluble proteins, which can be further improved by manipulation of the driving forces governing protein distribution between the phases. Integral and peripheral membrane protein subunits from intact membrane protein complexes partition to the detergent phase while soluble proteins are found in the polymer phase. A protocol is presented which combines nondenaturing solubilization of membrane proteins with extraction in detergent/polymer two-phase system for application in proteomic studies as a mild and efficient method for enrichment of membrane proteins and membrane protein complexes.
