  • The effect of sampling and quantization on frequency estimation
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: 1998 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing, ICASSP. ; , s. 2217-2220
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of sampling and quantization on frequency estimation for a single sinusoid is investigated. The Cramer-Rao bound for 1 bit quantization is derived, and compared with the limit of infinite quantization. It is found that 1 bit quantization gives a slightly worse performance, however, with a dramatic increase of variance at certain frequencies. This can be avoided by using 4 times oversampling. The effect of sampling when using non-ideal antialiasing lowpass filters is therefore investigated. Cramer-Rao lower bounds are derived, and the optimal filters and sampling frequencies are found. Finally, fast estimators for 1 bit sampling, in particular correlation based estimators, are derived. The paper concludes with simulation results for 4 times oversampled 1 bit quantization

  • Analysis of a simple, effective frequency estimator based on Prony’s method
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Statistical Signal and Array Processing, 1998. Proceedings., Ninth IEEE SP Workshop on. ; , s. 316-319
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a recent paper by Tufts and Fiore (1996) a low-complexity frequency estimator based on Prony’s method was proposed. The estimate is formed from two sample correlations r circ;(L1) and r circ;(L2), where 1 les;L1 les;L2 les;N-1 and N is the number of samples. For a correct phase unwrapping it is required that L1 and L2 are relatively prime. In this paper, a slight modification of the original algorithm is presented, and an expression for its asymptotic variance is derived. It is shown that the error variance is minimized for L1=3N/5 and L2=4N/5 for which the quotient of the error variance and the Cramer-Rao bound tends to 25/24 ap;1.042. Suboptimal settings of L1 and L2 are shown to exist, resulting in a lowered SNR-threshold while retaining the asymptotic efficiency. Simulation results which lend support to the theoretical findings are included

  • Asymptotic noise gain of polynomial predictors
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Signal Processing. - 0165-1684 .- 1872-7557. ; 62:2, s. 247-250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Finite impulse response filters for the prediction of polynomial signals are considered. An expression for the asymptotic noise gain (as the filter length increases without bound) is derived. It is shown that the asymptotic noise gain only depends on the polynomial order - in particular, it is independent of the prediction horizon. It is also shown that the noise gain forms a non-increasing sequence for increasing filter lengths. Numerical results that lend support to the theoretical findings are included.

  • Compensation for saturation effects in FIR-NLMS system identification
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Electronics Letters. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). - 0013-5194 .- 1350-911X. ; 34:4, s. 411-412
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An adaptive scheme is derived to be used in combination with the normalised least mean squares algorithm for finite impulse response models (FIR-NLMS), to combat nonlinear imperfections of the plant to be identified. The scheme is shown to outperform FIR-NLMS when a test system that consists of a variable static nonlinearity in cascade with a linear filter is identified.

  • 1995

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The synthesis procedure in [1] is applied to different notch filter structures with constrained parameters. Asymptotic results that give analytical insight into notch filter synthesis using parameter constrained filter structures are derived.

  • Frequency-estimation error variance of an adaptive scheme based on structured AR modeling
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on circuits and systems. 2, Analog and digital signal processing (Print). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1057-7130 .- 1558-125X. ; 46:11, s. 1361-1366
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An on-line version of a recently proposed frequency-estimation algorithm based on structured autoregressive (AK) modeling of data is derived for the special case of a single cisoid in noise. The adaptive notch filter utilizes a weighted sum-of-squares of the AR prediction error that is recursively minimized with respect to the frequency of the cisoid. The steady-state performance of the algorithm is characterized by aid of a linear filter-approximation technique, and design rules for the tuning variables are given, An excellent agreement is demonstrated between the results predicted by theory, and the measured performance based on numerical simulations. The tracking ability and noise rejection is compared both with the performance of alternative algorithms and with the appropriate Cramer-Rao bound. It is shown that the algorithm is close to being statistically efficient.

  • Frequency rate estimation at high SNR
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1053-587X .- 1941-0476. ; 45:8, s. 2101-2105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The problem of estimating the frequency rate-of-change of complex-valued frequency-modulated signals from noisy observations is considered. The performance of four related estimators is studied, both analytically and by means of simulations, and their relationship to the estimators proposed by Djuric/Kay and Lang/Musicus is established.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Estimation of the frequency rate of linear frequency modulated signals based on phase angles of fourth order sample moments is considered. Three low-complexity estimators are proposed whose performance is close to optimal, that is their error variance is close to the Cramer-Rao lower bound
