  • Female choice and male humoral immune response in the lekking great snipe (Gallinago media)
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Behavioral Ecology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1045-2249 .- 1465-7279. ; 16:2, s. 346-351
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Parasites and diseases constitute major evolutionary forces in many natural populations, and thus having an efficient immune defense to resist infections is crucial for many organisms. Properties of the immune response may also influence mate choice decisions in many animals. Theory predicts several advantages for females when choosing males with superior immune systems. These benefits can be both direct (e.g. increased paternal care and reduced disease transmission) and indirect (good genes). We have investigated female choice with respect to antibody response to two novel antigens in males of a lekking bird, the great snipe (Gallinago media). Because of the lek mating system, female choice probably mainly incurs indirect (genetic) rather than direct benefits. Males responded to vaccination with diphtheria and tetanus toxoids by producing specific antibodies to both antigens. Triggering the immune system had no negative impact on display activities or survival. Males that were chosen by females as mates had on average higher antibody response to the tetanus antigen than their neighbors. We did not, however, find any covariance between the strength of the antibody response and male mating success.

  • The effect of simvastatin treatment on the amyloid precursor protein and brain cholesterol metabolism in patients with Alzheimer's disease
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders. - : S. Karger AG. - 1420-8008 .- 1421-9824. ; 19:5-6, s. 256-265
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the last years, several clinical studies have been published trying to elucidate the effect of statin treatment on amyloid precursor protein (APP) processing and metabolism of brain cholesterol in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in humans. We present an open biochemical study where 19 patients with AD have been treated with simvastatin (20 mg/day) for 12 months. The aim was to further investigate the effect of simvastatin treatment on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers of APP processing, AD biomarkers as total tau and tau phosphorylated at threonine 181, brain cholesterol metabolism as well as on cognitive decline in patients with AD. Despite biochemical data suggesting that treatment with 20 mg/day of simvastatin for 12 months does affect the brain cholesterol metabolism, we did not find any change in CSF or plasma levels of β-amyloid (Aβ)1–42. However, by analysis of APP isoforms, we found that statin treatment may favor the nonamyloidogenic pathway of APP processing. The relevance and mechanism between statin treatment and AD has to be further elucidated by using statins of different lipophility in different dosages over a longer period of time.

  • Exposure to substances in the workplace and new-onset asthma : an international prospective population-based study (ECRHS-II)
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: The Lancet. - 0140-6736 .- 1474-547X. ; 370:9584, s. 336-341
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background The role of exposure to substances in the workplace in new-onset asthma is not well characterised in population-based studies. We therefore aimed to estimate the relative and attributable risks of new-onset asthma in relation to occupations, work-related exposures, and inhalation accidents. Methods We studied prospectively 6837 participants from 13 countries who previously took part in the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (1990-95) and did not report respiratory symptoms or a history of asthma at the time of the first study. Asthma was assessed by methacholine challenge test and by questionnaire data on asthma symptoms. Exposures were defined by high-risk occupations, an asthma-specific job exposure matrix with additional expert judgment, and through self-report of acute inhalation events. Relative risks for new onset asthma were calculated with log-binomial models adjusted for age, sex, smoking, and study Centre. Findings A significant excess asthma risk was seen after exposure to substances known to cause occupational asthma (Relative risk=1.6, 95% CI 1.1-2.3, p=0.017). Risks were highest for asthma defined by bronchial hyper-reactivity in addition to symptoms (2.4,1.3-4.6, p=0.008). Of common occupations, a significant excess risk of asthma was seen for nursing (2.2,1.3-4.0, p=0.007). Asthma risk was also increased in participants who reported an acute symptomatic inhalation event such as fire, mixing cleaning products, or chemical spills (RR=3.3, 95% CI 1.0-11.1, p=0.051). The population-attributable risk for adult asthma due to occupational exposures ranged from 10% to 25%, equivalent to an incidence of new-onset occupational asthma of 250-300 cases per million people per year. Interpretation Occupational exposures account for a substantial proportion of adult asthma incidence. The increased risk of asthma after inhalation accidents suggests that workers who have such accidents should be monitored closely.

  • A Delphi study of research needs for Swedish libraries
  • 2009
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Delphi technique has been used to systematically map the opinions on research needs of Swedish librarians. The study shows that what is considered relevant research is dependent on what kind of library operation the respondent works in. The highest priority is accorded to factors affecting strategic development, followed by the changing roles of libraries in their communities and the impact of library programmes on learning and transferable skills, but the results vary greatly between groups. The study is now an important foundation for the formulation of research questions and enhanced cooperation. The report plays an important role in those areas, but is also methodologically interesting as it gives a good description of how the Delphi technique can be used and of its constituent stages.

  • Occupational risk factors for asthma among nurses and related healthcare professionals in an international study
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Occupational and Environmental Medicine. - : BMJ. - 1351-0711 .- 1470-7926. ; 64:7, s. 474-479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The authors examined the relations between self-reported work tasks, use of cleaning products and latex glove use with new-onset asthma among nurses and other healthcare workers in the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS II). Methods: In a random population sample of adults from 22 European sites, 332 participants reported working in nursing and other related healthcare jobs during the nine-year ECRHS II follow-up period and responded to a supplemental questionnaire about their principal work settings, occupational tasks, products used at work and respiratory symptoms. Poisson regression models with robust error variances were used to compare the risk of new-onset asthma among healthcare workers with each exposure to that of respondents who reported professional or administrative occupations during the entire follow-up period (n=2481). Results: Twenty (6%) healthcare workers and 131 (5%) members of the referent population reported new-onset asthma. Compared to the referent group, the authors observed increased risks among hospital technicians (RR 4.63; 95% Cl 1.87 to 11.5) and among those using ammonia and/or bleach at work (RR 2.16; 95% Cl 1.03 to 4.53). Conclusions: In the ECRHS II cohort, hospital technicians and other healthcare workers experience increased risks of new-onset current asthma, possibly due to specific products used at work.

  • A solid phase reaction between Ti Cx thin films and Al2 O3 substrates
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 103:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ti Cx thin films were deposited on Al2 O3 substrates at 900 °C by using a multiple cathode high current pulsed cathodic arc. The Ti:C pulse ratio and, hence, the composition was varied from C rich to Ti rich. It is found that the Al2 O3 substrate is decomposed and reacts with the Ti Cx film to incorporate significant amounts of O and Al in the growing film. When the stoichiometry is suitable, epitaxially oriented Ti2 AlC MAX phase with significant O incorporated is formed. The results indicate that Al2 O3 is not an ideal substrate material for the growth of transition metal carbides and MAX phase thin films. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

  • Influenza work on the regional level in Sweden: An integrated program for vaccination of risk groups, surveillance and pandemic planning which focuses on the role of the health care worker
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Vaccine. - : Elsevier BV. - 0264-410X. ; 24:44-46, s. 6712-6716
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to increase the vaccination rates of influenza among the risk groups in Region Västra Götaland, Sweden. The main interventions performed were education of doctors and nurses, information on the Internet and advice on administrative routines and organisation for the task. There was no campaign towards the risk group and no reimbursement. The vaccination rate increased from 33.6 to 54.6% in the Göteborg area between 1999 and 2004 and from 44.1 to 51.9% in the whole region. Vaccination rates increased with age and chronic disease in the elderly population, among person's 20-64 years of age with chronic disease only 23.8-34.0% were vaccinated. In order to increase the vaccination coverage in persons with chronic disease the program intensified the education of hospital staff. It was then evident that the awareness and knowledge about influenza and vaccination was limited among hospital doctors. The study demonstrates the key role of health care workers in a vaccination program and points at the importance of preparing the personnel for a pandemic situation. Co-ordination of the vaccination program with the surveillance and pandemic planning are effective means of strengthening the preventive work against influenza. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. • Domestic use of hypochlorite bleach, atopic sensitization, and respiratory symptoms in adults
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0091-6749 .- 1097-6825. ; 124:4, s. 731-738
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Professional use of hypochlorite (bleach) has been associated with respiratory symptoms. Bleach is capable of inactivating allergens, and there are indications that its domestic use may reduce the risk of allergies in children. OBJECTIVE: To study the associations between household use of bleach and atopic sensitization, allergic diseases, and respiratory health status in adults. METHODS: We identified 3626 participants of the European Community Respiratory Health Survey II in 10 countries who did the cleaning in their homes and for whom data on specific serum IgE to 4 environmental allergens were available. Frequency of bleach use and information on respiratory symptoms were obtained in face-to-face interviews. House dust mite and cat allergens in mattress dust were measured in a subsample. Associations between the frequency of bleach use and health outcomes were evaluated by using multivariable mixed logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: The use of bleach was associated with less atopic sensitization (odds ratio [OR], 0.75; 95% CI, 0.63-0.89). This association was apparent for specific IgE to both indoor (cat) and outdoor (grass) allergens, and was consistent in various subgroups, including those without any history of respiratory problems (OR, 0.85). Dose-response relationships (P < .05) were apparent for the frequency of bleach use and sensitization rates. Lower respiratory tract symptoms, but not allergic symptoms, were more prevalent among those using bleach 4 or more days per week (OR, 1.24-1.49). The use of bleach was not associated with indoor allergen concentrations. CONCLUSION: People who clean their homes with hypochlorite bleach are less likely to be atopic but more likely to have respiratory symptoms.
