  • Examination of how properties of a fissioning system impact isomeric yield ratios of the fragments
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 108:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The population of isomeric states in the prompt decay of fission fragments-so-called isomeric yield ratios (IYRs)-is known to be sensitive to the angular momentum J that the fragment emerged with, and may therefore contain valuable information on the mechanism behind the fission process. In this work, we investigate how changes in the fissioning system impact the measured IYRs of fission fragments to learn more about what parameters affect angular momentum generation. To enable this, a new technique for measuring IYRs is first demonstrated. It is based on the time of arrival of discrete gamma rays, and has the advantage that it enables the study of the IYR as a function of properties of the partner nucleus. This technique is used to extract the IYR of 134Te, strongly populated in actinide fission, from the three different fissioning systems: 232Th(n, f), 238U(n, f), at two different neutron energies, as well as 252Cf(sf). The impacts of changing the fissioning system, the compound nuclear excitation energy, the minimum J of the binary partner, and the number of neutrons emitted on the IYR of 134Te are determined. The decay code TALYS is used in combination with the fission simulation code FREYA to calculate the primary fragment angular momentum from the IYR. We find that the IYR of 134Te has a slope of 0.004 +/- 0.002 with increase in compound nucleus (CN) mass. When investigating the impact on the IYR of increased CN excitation energy, we find no change with an energy increase similar to the difference between thermal and fast fission. By varying the mass of the partner fragment emerging with 134Te, it is revealed that the IYR of 134Te is independent of the total amount of prompt neutrons emitted from the fragment pair. This indicates that neutrons carry minimal angular momentum away from the fission fragments. Comparisons with the FREYA+TALYS simulations reveal that the average angular momentum in 134Te following 238U(n, f) is 6.0 h over bar . This is not consistent with the value deduced from recent CGMF calculations. Finally, the IYR sensitivity to the angular momentum of the primary fragment is discussed. These results are not only important to help understanding the underlying mechanism in nuclear fission, but can also be used to constrain and benchmark fission models, and are relevant to the gamma -ray heating problem of reactors.

  • Recent human-induced atmospheric drying across Europe unprecedented in the last 400 years
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: NATURE GEOSCIENCE. - 1752-0894 .- 1752-0908. ; 17, s. 58-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The vapor pressure deficit reflects the difference between how much moisture the atmosphere could and actually does hold, a factor that fundamentally affects evapotranspiration, ecosystem functioning, and vegetation carbon uptake. Its spatial variability and long-term trends under natural versus human-influenced climate are poorly known despite being essential for predicting future effects on natural ecosystems and human societies such as crop yield, wildfires, and health. Here we combine regionally distinct reconstructions of pre-industrial summer vapor pressure deficit variability from Europe's largest oxygen-isotope network of tree-ring cellulose with observational records and Earth system model simulations with and without human forcing included. We demonstrate that an intensification of atmospheric drying during the recent decades across different European target regions is unprecedented in a pre-industrial context and that it is attributed to human influence with more than 98% probability. The magnitude of this trend is largest in Western and Central Europe, the Alps and Pyrenees region, and the smallest in southern Fennoscandia. In view of the extreme drought and compound events of the recent years, further atmospheric drying poses an enhanced risk to vegetation, specifically in the densely populated areas of the European temperate lowlands. The atmosphere has dried across most regions of Europe in recent decades, a trend that can be attributed primarily to human impacts, according to tree ring records spanning 400 years and Earth system model simulations.

  • Two patients with allergy to celery - Possible role of carbohydrate determinants and difference between seeds and tuber allergenicity
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: World Allergy Organization Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 1939-4551. ; 15:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vegetables provide important nutrients but can also induce allergic symptoms. Celery tuber al-lergy frequently occurs in Central European countries and can cause allergic reactions including fatal anaphylactic shocks. There is little information about allergen content in seeds. Therefore, we analyzed 2 patients with allergic reaction after remoulade sauce consumption who entered the clinic for a diagnostic work-up. The routine diagnostic included serum derived specific IgE testing by ImmunoCAP, ImmunoCAP ISAC, and skin prick tests (SPTs). Furthermore, protein extracts were prepared from both celery tuber and celery seeds and IgE binding capacity of these extracts was assessed by immunoblots, ELISA, and rat basophil leukemia (RBL) assay. We also determined role of cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants (CCDs) by IgE inhibition ELISA. Results revealed distinct protein patterns from celery tuber and seed extracts, suggesting differences in content and quantity of allergenic proteins. IgE antibodies from both sera bound to high molecular weight (HMW) proteins on immunoblots and caused high basophil response, which was also observed upon addition of glycosylated proteins as horseradish peroxidase and Api g 5, respectively. Our results indicate that it is worth considering CCDs from plant foods as a possible allergenic factor and their contribution to the mugwort-celery syndrome.

    • Last year, we presented a vision to make Prosthetics and Orthotics International the journal of choice for all those who wish to access and contribute to the ever-increasing body of knowledge in our field.1 For Editors-in-Chief, this entails not only day-to-day management of manuscript submission, peer review, and publication processes, but also consideration of evolving principles and practices regarding the reporting of research. In this editorial, we discuss the challenges we experience in maintaining a double-blind peer review process while also encouraging research transparency.

  • Resource A fine-tuned azobenzene for enhanced in vivo
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cell Chemical Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 2451-9448 .- 2451-9456. ; 28:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the power of photopharmacology for interrogating signaling proteins, many photopharmacological systems are limited by their efficiency, speed, or spectral properties. Here, we screen a library of azobenzene photoswitches and identify a urea-substituted "azobenzene-400"core that offers bistable switching between cis and trans with improved kinetics, light sensitivity, and a red-shift. We then focus on the metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs), neuromodulatory receptors that are major pharmacological targets. Synthesis of "BGAG12,400,"a photoswitchable orthogonal, remotely tethered ligand (PORTL), enables highly efficient, rapid optical agonism following conjugation to SNAP-tagged mGluR2 and permits robust optical control of mGluR1 and mGluR5 signaling. We then produce fluorophore-conjugated branched PORTLs to enable dual imaging and manipulation of mGluRs and highlight their power in ex vivo slice and in vivo behavioral experiments in the mouse prefrontal cortex. Finally, we demonstrate the generalizability of our strategy by developing an improved soluble, photoswitchable pore blocker for potassium channels.

  • Categorization and recommendations for outcome measures for lower limb absence by an expert panel
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Prosthetics and Orthotics International. - 0309-3646 .- 1746-1553. ; 47:6, s. 565-574
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Understanding the psychometric strengths and limitations of outcome measures for use with people with lower limb absence (LLA) is important for selecting measures suited to evaluating patient outcomes, answering clinical and research questions, and informing health care policy. The aim of this project was to review the current psychometric evidence on outcome measures in people with LLA to determine which measures should be included in a stakeholder consensus process. Methods: An expert panel was assembled, and a 3-stage review process was used to categorize outcome measures identified in a systematic literature review into 3 distinct categories (recommended for measures with better than adequate psychometric properties; recommended with qualification; and unable to recommend). Panelists were asked to individually categorize measures based on results of a systematic review of identified measures’ psychometric properties. Each measure’s final categorization was based on $70% agreement by all panelists. Results: No outcome measure attained the $70% consensus threshold needed to achieve a rating of “recommend.” Hence, panelists suggested combining “recommend” and “recommend with qualifications” into a single category of “recommend with qualifications.” Using this approach, consensus was reached for 59 of 60 measures. Consensus could not be reached on 1 outcome measure (socket comfort score). Thirty-six outcome measures were categorized as “unable to recommend” based on available evidence; however, 23 (12 patient-reported measures and 11 performance-based measures) demonstrated adequate psychometric properties in LLA samples and were thus rated as “recommend with qualification” by the expert panel. The panel of experts were able to recommend 23 measures for inclusion in the subsequent stakeholder review. A key strength of this process was bringing together international researchers with extensive experience in developing and/or using LLA outcome measures who could assist in identifying psychometrically sound measures to include in a subsequent stakeholder consensus process. Conclusion: The above categorizations represent the current state of psychometric evidence on outcome measures for people with LLA and hence may change over time as additional research becomes available. The results will be used to achieve wider consensus from clinicians, health policymakers, health clinic managers, researchers, and end users (i.e., individuals with LLA) on outcome measures for the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics lower limb Consensus Outcome Measures for Prosthetic and Amputation ServiceS.
