  • Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 427:5-6, s. 257-454
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron-positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLID experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries and polarised asymmetries. The mass and width of the Z boson, m(Z) and Gamma(Z), and its couplings to fermions, for example the p parameter and the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons, are precisely measured: m(Z) = 91.1875 +/- 0.0021 GeV, Gamma(Z) = 2.4952 +/- 0.0023 GeV, rho(l) = 1.0050 +/- 0.0010, sin(2)theta(eff)(lept) = 0.23153 +/- 0.00016. The number of light neutrino species is determined to be 2.9840 +/- 0.0082, in agreement with the three observed generations of fundamental fermions. The results are compared to the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). At the Z-pole, electroweak radiative corrections beyond the running of the QED and QCD coupling constants are observed with a significance of five standard deviations, and in agreement with the Standard Model. Of the many Z-pole measurements, the forward-backward asymmetry in b-quark production shows the largest difference with respect to its SM expectation, at the level of 2.8 standard deviations. Through radiative corrections evaluated in the framework of the Standard Model, the Z-pole data are also used to predict the mass of the top quark, m(t) = 173(+10)(+13) GeV, and the mass of the W boson, m(W) = 80.363 +/- 0.032 GeV. These indirect constraints are compared to the direct measurements, providing a stringent test of the SM. Using in addition the direct measurements of m(t) and m(W), the mass of the as yet unobserved SM Higgs boson is predicted with a relative uncertainty of about 50% and found to be less than 285 GeV at 95% confidence level. • Octupole signatures in Ba-124,Ba-125
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 31:10, s. S1729-S1733
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gamma decay of the nuclei Ba-121,Ba-125 has been investigated with the EUROBALL array, using the reaction Ni-64+Ni-64 at E-beam = 255 and 261 MeV. Six new E1 transitions have been found in the nucleus Ba-125, suggesting a significant role of octupole correlations in the origin of its parity doublets. The J(pi) = 3(-) level of the nucleus Ba-124 has been identified for the first time. Its excitation energy is in very good agreement with a prediction based on a microscopic model including octupole interactions.

  • Beyond band termination in Er-157 and the search for wobbling excitations in strongly deformed Hf-174
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 31:10, s. 1735-1740
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin terminating bands in heavy nuclei were first identified in nuclei around Er-158(90). While examples of special terminating states have been identified in a number of erbium isotopes, almost nothing is known about the states lying beyond band termination. In the present work the high-spin structure of Er-157 has been studied using the Gammasphere spectrometer. The subject of triaxial superdeformation and 'wobbling' modes in Lu nuclei has rightly attracted a great deal of attention. Very recently, four strongly or superdeformed (SD) sequences have been observed in Hf-174 and ultimate cranker calculations predict, such structures may have significant triaxial deformation. We have performed two experiments in an attempt to verify the possible triaxial nature of these bands. A lifetime measurement was performed to confirm the large (and similar) deformation of the bands. In addition, a high-statistics, thin-target experiment was run to search for linking transitions between the SD bands and possible wobbling modes.

  • Triaxiality at high spins in Nd nuclei
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - 0031-8949. ; T125, s. 212-213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The level structure of Nd-140(80) has been established up to spin 48 by in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy using the Zr-96(Ca-48, 4n) reaction. High-fold gamma-ray coincidences were measured with the EUROBALL spectrometer. Twelve new rotational bands have been discovered at high spins, showing the change from a spherical single-particle behaviour at low spins to a deformed regime with stable triaxiality at high spins. Possible configurations are assigned to the observed bands on the basis of configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.

  • Identification of triaxial strongly deformed bands in Hf-168
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 78:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Possible decay pathways associated with three candidates for triaxial strongly deformed (TSD) bands in Hf-168 have been investigated. The spin and excitation energy of the strongest band, TSD1, were determined approximately based on gamma-ray coincidence relationships. Discrete links were established for the second band. The overall agreement between the observed properties of the bands and cranking calculations using the ULTIMATE CRANKER code provides strong support for an interpretation where band TSD1 is associated with a TSD minimum, (epsilon(2),gamma)similar to(0.43,20(degrees)), involving the pi(i(13/2))(2) and the nu(j(15/2)) high-j orbitals. This constitutes the first identification of a TSD band in Hf isotopes, which has been long-predicted by theoretical studies. The second band is understood as being associated with a near-prolate shape and a deformation enhanced with respect to the normal deformed bands. It is proposed to be built on the pi(i(13/2)h(9/2))circle times nu(i(13/2))(2) configuration.

  • Transition to non-collective states at high spin in Xe-124
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001. ; 36:1, s. 21-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states in Xe-124 were populated in the reaction Se-82(Ca-48, 6n) Xe-124 and gamma-ray coincidence relationships were measured with the Gammasphere spectrometer. Two new bands are observed and several of the previously known bands are extended in the high-as well as in the low-spin region. Two irregular high-spin structures are also added. The irregularities are a fingerprint of a transition from collective to non-collective behaviour. Configuration assignments to the new structures are proposed on the basis of systematics and by comparing experimental properties with calculations within the framework of the cranking model.

  • Charged particle feeding of hyperdeformed nuclei in the A=118-126 region
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T125, s. 108-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A breakthrough was recently obtained in the analysis of the so-called Hyper-Long-HyperDeformed (HLHD) experiment made at the EUROBALL-IV gamma-detector array (EB). The Ni-64 + Ni-64 double right arrow Ba-128* fusion reaction was studied at E-beam = 255 and 261 MeV, reaching the highest angular momentum that the compound nuclei can accommodate. To date no discrete HD rotational bands have been identified. However, rotational patterns in the form of ridge-structures in three-dimensional (3D) rotational mapped spectra are identified with dynamic moments of inertia J((2)) ranging from 71 to 111h(2) MeV-1 in 12 different nuclei selected by charged particle- and/or gamma-gating. The four nuclei, Te-118, Cs-124, Cs-125 and Xe-124 found with moment of inertia J((2)) >= 100h(2) MeV-1, are most likely hyperdeformed, the remaining nuclei with smaller values of J((2)), are considered to be superdeformed, in qualitative agreement with recent theoretical calculations.

  • Band structures in I-123
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 32:3, s. 283-294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states of I-123 were populated via the Cd-116(N-14, alpha 3n) reaction at 65 MeV. The resultant gamma-rays were detected using standard gamma-ray spectroscopic techniques with the NORDBALL detector array. Two previously known positive-parity Delta I = 2 sequences have been extended up to 31/2(+) and 41/2(+). In addition, a number of Delta I = 1 transitions linking the two Delta I = 2 sequences have been observed. It is suggested that both Delta I = 2 sequences are based on a common configuration. This Delta I = 1 band is proposed to be built predominantly on the 97/2[404]7/2(+) oblate configuration, based on the energylevel spectra, B(MI)/B(E2) ratios and the theoretical predictions from the particle-rotor model. The previously identified Delta I = 1 rotational band built on the prolate g(9/2)[404]9/2(+) orbital has also been extended to higher spins. Another previously identified but weakly populated Delta I = 1 band is confirmed and is proposed to be built on the d(5/2)[413]5/2' configuration with the ground state of I-123 as the bandhead.
