  • Functional and evolutionary insights from the genomes of three parasitoid Nasonia species.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 327:5963, s. 343-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report here genome sequences and comparative analyses of three closely related parasitoid wasps: Nasonia vitripennis, N. giraulti, and N. longicornis. Parasitoids are important regulators of arthropod populations, including major agricultural pests and disease vectors, and Nasonia is an emerging genetic model, particularly for evolutionary and developmental genetics. Key findings include the identification of a functional DNA methylation tool kit; hymenopteran-specific genes including diverse venoms; lateral gene transfers among Pox viruses, Wolbachia, and Nasonia; and the rapid evolution of genes involved in nuclear-mitochondrial interactions that are implicated in speciation. Newly developed genome resources advance Nasonia for genetic research, accelerate mapping and cloning of quantitative trait loci, and will ultimately provide tools and knowledge for further increasing the utility of parasitoids as pest insect-control agents.

  • Objective comparison of particle tracking methods
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nature Methods. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1548-7091 .- 1548-7105. ; 11:3, s. 281-U247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Particle tracking is of key importance for quantitative analysis of intracellular dynamic processes from time-lapse microscopy image data. Because manually detecting and following large numbers of individual particles is not feasible, automated computational methods have been developed for these tasks by many groups. Aiming to perform an objective comparison of methods, we gathered the community and organized an open competition in which participating teams applied their own methods independently to a commonly defined data set including diverse scenarios. Performance was assessed using commonly defined measures. Although no single method performed best across all scenarios, the results revealed clear differences between the various approaches, leading to notable practical conclusions for users and developers.

  • Flip-chip assembled 7 GHz ultra-low phase-noise InGaP HBT oscillator
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 2010 International Conference on Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology; Portland, OR; United States; 17 May 2010 through 20 May 2010. - 9781893580152
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on a flip-chip assembled 7 GHz ultra-low phase-noise GaAs InGaP heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) oscillator. The cross-coupled oscillator was flip-chip bonded to an in-house fabricated Al2O3 carrier with patterns optimized for low-loss transitions. After flip-chip, the phase noise of the crosscoupled InGaP HBT oscillator was improved due to an increased Q-factor of the resonant tank. An ultra-low phase-noise of -112 dBc/Hz @ 100 kHz offset and -128 dBc/Hz @ 1 MHz offset with a high output power of 7 dBm at 7 GHz was achieved. To our best knowledge, this is the lowest phase noise reported for a flip-chip assembled oscillator.

  • Flip-Chip-Based Multichip Module for Low Phase-Noise V -Band Frequency Generation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques. - 0018-9480 .- 1557-9670. ; 58:9, s. 2408-2419
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper reports on a flip-chip (FC)-based multichip module (MCM) for low phase-noise (PN) V -band frequency generation. A high-performance x8 GaAs metamorphic high-electron mobility transistor monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) multiplier and a low PN 7-GHz GaAs InGaP heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) MMIC oscillator were used in the module. The microstrip MMICs were FC bonded to an Al2O3 carrier with patterns optimized for low-loss transitions. The FC-based module was experimentally characterized to have a PN of -88 dBe/Hz @ 100-kHz offset and -112 dBc/Hz @ 1-MHz offset with an output power of 11 dBm. For comparison, the MMICs were also FC bonded as individual chips and the performance was compared with the bare dies without FC bonding. It was verified that the FC bonding has no detrimental effect on the MMIC performance. The tests revealed that the FC module provided improved performance. To our best knowledge, this is the first FC-based module for millimeter-wave frequency generation. The module also presents one of the best PN reported for millimeter-wave frequency sources.

  • Spatial Group Based Random Access for M2M Communications
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Letters. - 1089-7798 .- 1558-2558. ; 18:6, s. 961-964
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We expect that the number of machine-to-machine (M2M) devices will rapidly increase in the near future due to a growing demand for a wide range of M2M applications such as e-health, public safety, surveillance, remote maintenance and control, and smart metering. Therefore, the future cellular networks should accommodate a large number of M2M devices and their random access (RA) requests at a specific time instant. In this letter, we propose a novel RA scheme to effectively increase the number of available preambles for the future M2M communication environment. The proposed scheme provides additional preambles by spatially partitioning a cell coverage into multiple group regions and reducing cyclic shift size in RA preambles. As a result, the proposed RA scheme can accommodate a significantly larger number of machine nodes with much lower collision probability and shorter random access delay, compared to a conventional RA scheme.

  • Sick building syndrome among parents of preschool children in relation to home environment in Chongqing, China
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Chinese Science Bulletin. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1001-6538 .- 1861-9541. ; 58:34, s. 4267-4276
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The prevalence and risk factors of sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms in domestic environments were studied by a questionnaire survey on the home environment. Parents of 5299 3-6 years old children from randomly selected kindergartens in Chongqing, China returned completed questionnaires between December 2010 and April 2011. The prevalence of parents' SBS symptoms (often (every week) compared with never) were: 11.4% for general symptoms, 7.1% for mucosal symptoms and 4.4% for skin symptoms. Multiple logistic regressions were applied controlling for gender and asthma/allergic rhinitis/eczema. Living near a main road or highway was a strong risk factor for general symptoms (adjusted odds ratio, aOR=2.16, P<0.001), skin symptoms (aOR=2.69, P<0.001), and mucosal symptoms (aOR=1.63, P<0.01). Redecoration was a risk factor for general symptoms (aOR=2.00, P<0.001), skin symptoms (aOR=1.66, P<0.01), and mucosal symptoms (aOR=1.66, P<0.05). New furniture was a risk factor for general symptoms (aOR=2.16, P<0.001) and skin symptoms (aOR=1.67, P<0.01). Dampness related problems (mould spot, damp stain, water damage and condensation) were all risk factors for SBS symptoms, as was the presence of cockroaches, rats, and mosquitoes/flies and use of incense. Protective factors include cleaning the child's bedroom every day and frequently exposing bedding to sunshine. In conclusion, adults' SBS symptoms were related to factors of the home environment.

  • No interactions between previously associated 2-hour glucose gene variants and physical activity or BMI on 2-hour glucose levels
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Diabetes. - Alexandria, VA : American Diabetes Association. - 0012-1797 .- 1939-327X. ; 61:5, s. 1291-1296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gene-lifestyle interactions have been suggested to contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. Glucose levels 2 h after a standard 75-g glucose challenge are used to diagnose diabetes and are associated with both genetic and lifestyle factors. However, whether these factors interact to determine 2-h glucose levels is unknown. We meta-analyzed single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) × BMI and SNP × physical activity (PA) interaction regression models for five SNPs previously associated with 2-h glucose levels from up to 22 studies comprising 54,884 individuals without diabetes. PA levels were dichotomized, with individuals below the first quintile classified as inactive (20%) and the remainder as active (80%). BMI was considered a continuous trait. Inactive individuals had higher 2-h glucose levels than active individuals (β = 0.22 mmol/L [95% CI 0.13-0.31], P = 1.63 × 10(-6)). All SNPs were associated with 2-h glucose (β = 0.06-0.12 mmol/allele, P ≤ 1.53 × 10(-7)), but no significant interactions were found with PA (P > 0.18) or BMI (P ≥ 0.04). In this large study of gene-lifestyle interaction, we observed no interactions between genetic and lifestyle factors, both of which were associated with 2-h glucose. It is perhaps unlikely that top loci from genome-wide association studies will exhibit strong subgroup-specific effects, and may not, therefore, make the best candidates for the study of interactions.

  • The ENIGMA Consortium : large-scale collaborative analyses of neuroimaging and genetic data
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: BRAIN IMAGING BEHAV. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1931-7557 .- 1931-7565. ; 8:2, s. 153-182
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis (ENIGMA) Consortium is a collaborative network of researchers working together on a range of large-scale studies that integrate data from 70 institutions worldwide. Organized into Working Groups that tackle questions in neuroscience, genetics, and medicine, ENIGMA studies have analyzed neuroimaging data from over 12,826 subjects. In addition, data from 12,171 individuals were provided by the CHARGE consortium for replication of findings, in a total of 24,997 subjects. By meta-analyzing results from many sites, ENIGMA has detected factors that affect the brain that no individual site could detect on its own, and that require larger numbers of subjects than any individual neuroimaging study has currently collected. ENIGMA's first project was a genome-wide association study identifying common variants in the genome associated with hippocampal volume or intracranial volume. Continuing work is exploring genetic associations with subcortical volumes (ENIGMA2) and white matter microstructure (ENIGMA-DTI). Working groups also focus on understanding how schizophrenia, bipolar illness, major depression and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affect the brain. We review the current progress of the ENIGMA Consortium, along with challenges and unexpected discoveries made on the way.

  • Aggregation-enhanced fluorescence in PEGylated phospholipid nanomicelles for in vivo imaging
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Biomaterials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0142-9612 .- 1878-5905. ; 32:25, s. 5880-5888
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report polymeric nanomicelles doped with organic fluorophores (StCN, (Z)-2,3-bis[4-(N-4-(diphenylamino)styryl)phenyl]-acrylonitrile), which have the property of aggregation-enhanced fluorescence. The fluorescent nanomicelles have two unique features: (1) They give much brighter fluorescence emission than mono-fluorophores. (2) The nanomicelles with amphiphilic copolymers [e.g., phospholipids-PEG (polyethylene glycol)] make the encapsulated fluorophores more stable in various bio-environments and easy for further conjugation with bio-molecules. After chemical and optical characterization, these fluorescent nanomicelles are utilized as efficient optical probes for in vivo sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping of mice. The StCN-encapsulated nanomicelles, as well as their bioconjugates with arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) peptides, are used to target subcutaneously xenografted tumors in mice, and in vivo fluorescence images demonstrate the potential to use PEGylated phospholipid nanomicelles with aggregation-enhanced fluorescence as bright nanoprobes for in vivo diagnosis of tumors.
