  • A search for murarregamma at the level of 10-13
  • 1991
  • In: Proceedings of the 25th International Conference on High Energy Physics. - 9810024347 ; , s. 1070-1071
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The MEGA experiment, which is a search for the decay murarregamma with a branching ratio sensitivity of about 10-13, employs highly modular, fast detectors, state-of-the-art electronics, and a staged trigger with on-line filters. The detectors are contained in a 1.5-T solenoidal field produced by a superconducting magnet. Positrons are confined to the central region and are measured by a set of thin MWPCs. Photons are measured by one of four layers of pair spectrometers in the outer region. Most aspects of the design have been validated in engineering runs; data taking will begin in 1990 with much of the electron arm and one pair spectrometer layer installed.

  • Dissociation Reactions of the Be-11 One-Neutron Halo - the Interplay between Structure and Reaction-Mechanism
  • 1993
  • In: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 304:1-2, s. 55-59
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The angular distributions of the forward neutrons in the exclusive (Be-10 + n) channel have been measured. They can be accounted for quantitatively and without free parameters in terms of Coulomb and diffraction dissociation. The results show that the transverse momentum distributions result from an interplay between the tail of the wave function (the halo) and the reaction mechanism.

  • Exclusive and Restricted-Inclusive Reactions Involving the Be-11 One-Neutron Halo
  • 1994
  • In: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 575:1, s. 125-154
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Reactions of a 41 MeV/u beam of the radioactive halo nucleus Be-11 have been studied with a counter telescope coupled to an array of neutron detectors covering angles up to 97-degrees. The technique allows to determine single-neutron inclusive and exclusive angular distributions. The targets (Be, Ti and Au) were chosen to illustrate the relative roles played by nuclear and Coulomb mechanisms. The channels leading to Be-10, the dissociation channels, correspond to impact parameters larger than the sum of the radii of the target and the Be-10 core. It is shown that for the dissociation process it is possible to account almost quantitatively for the integral, single- and double-differential cross sections from models without free parameters including the Coulomb, Serber and Glauber (diffraction-dissociation) mechanisms. The neutron distributions from the nondissociative reaction channels show little individuality and it is convenient to group them together as the channel ''neutron plus anything different from Be-10''. We refer to these as ''restricted-inclusive'' reactions. These seem to be a promising tool for obtaining accurate information on the halo wave function in momentum coordinates.

  • Effects of ventral striatal 6-OHDA lesions or amphetamine sensitization on ethanol consumption in the rat.
  • 1994
  • In: Pharmacology, biochemistry, and behavior. - 0091-3057. ; 47:2, s. 345-9
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Female rats with continuous access to water and 6% ethanol were given bilateral ventral striatal 6-OHDA infusions, which induced pronounced striatal depletions of dopamine. The postoperative ethanol consumption of these rats was not significantly affected in comparison to vehicle-infused controls. In a second experiment, female rats received escalating doses of d-amphetamine over a 5-week period (from 1 to 9 mg/kg/injection). Control females were given saline injections. Following a 3-month drug-free interval, the females were given access to ethanol, the concentration of which was gradually increased from 2% to 12% with weekly intervals. Amphetamine-sensitized rats consumed significantly more alcohol than the saline-treated controls. Taken together, these results suggest that striatal dopaminergic mechanisms, while not necessary for basal ethanol drinking, can facilitate alcohol drinking.

  • Metyrapone-induced suppression of corticosterone synthesis reduces ethanol consumption in high-preferring rats.
  • 1994
  • In: Pharmacology, biochemistry, and behavior. - 0091-3057. ; 48:4, s. 977-81
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The fluid intake of male Wistar rats with simultaneous access to water and 6% ethanol was determined between 0900 and 1500 h. In high-preferring males (normally covering > 60% of their daily fluid consumption in the form of ethanol), two injections with the corticosterone synthesis inhibitor metyrapone (50 mg/kg) at 0900 h and 1200 h for 4 consecutive days significantly reduced ethanol preference such that they preferred water over alcohol. Treatment with corticosterone (0.6 mg/kg) 2 h before each metyrapone injection partially cancelled this effect of the synthesis inhibitor. By contrast, there was no significant effect of metyrapone treatment on the drinking of ethanol in low-preferring rats (normally covering < 30% of their daily fluid consumption in the form of ethanol). These results suggest that the adrenal secretion of corticosterone directly or indirectly modulates the intake of alcohol in high-preferring rats.

  • Search for Forbidden Beta-Decays of the Drip-Line Nucleus Be-12
  • 1994
  • In: Zeitschrift fur Physik A Hadrons and Nuclei. - 1431-5831 .- 0939-7922. ; 348:1, s. 61-62
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Beta-coincident gamma-rays have been measured from implanted pure samples of Be-12 separated at the LISE3 spectrometer at GANIL. An intensity of 0.040(26)% can be estimated for the branching ratio of the isospin forbidden pure-Fermi transition to the 0+ excited state of B-12 and of 0.008(6) % of the transition to the 1- excited state. Both are taken to represent upper limits. The halflife has been re-measured to be 26.1(2.4) ms.

  • Eighty-year-old men without cardiovascular disease in the community of Malmö. Part II. Smoking characteristics and ultrasound findings, with special reference to glutathione transferase and pyridoxal-5-phosphate
  • 1990
  • In: Journal of Internal Medicine. - 0954-6820. ; 228:1, s. 17-22
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A total of 1280 80-year-old men in the community of Malmö were questioned about smoking habits and the occurrence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). After a careful medical and duplex ultrasound examination, four groups were selected for further studies: (1) no CVD, non-smokers: (2) no CVD, smokers: (3) CVD, smokers: (4) CVD, non-smokers. In total 122 individuals participated. The average tobacco consumption by smokers was 13 g d-1 for 59 years. In the CVD group 45% of subjects had atherosclerotic symptoms at more than one site. Smoking was found to be correlated with lower extremity atherosclerosis, cholesterol and LDL cholesterol were correlated with carotid artery lesions and pathological ankle/arm index, and blood pressure was correlated with lower extremity lesions. In contrast with middle-aged populations, individuals with an increasing degree of lesions in the lower extremities had a larger percentage of high glutathione transferase activity than subjects without CVD. Smokers had significantly lower pyridoxal-5-phosphate levels than non-smokers. It is concluded that some heavy smokers might reach an advanced age in good health. Smoking was also operative as a risk indicator for lower extremity atherosclerosis in 80-year-old individuals.
