  • "Vi klimatforskare stödjer Greta och skolungdomarna"
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Dagens nyheter (DN debatt). - 1101-2447.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • DN DEBATT 15/3.

  • Interactions between the atmosphere, cryosphere, and ecosystems at northern high latitudes
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1680-7316 .- 1680-7324. ; 19:3, s. 2015-2061
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Nordic Centre of Excellence CRAICC (Cryosphere-Atmosphere Interactions in a Changing Arctic Climate), funded by NordForsk in the years 2011-2016, is the largest joint Nordic research and innovation initiative to date, aiming to strengthen research and innovation regarding climate change issues in the Nordic region. CRAICC gathered more than 100 scientists from all Nordic countries in a virtual centre with the objectives of identifying and quantifying the major processes controlling Arctic warming and related feedback mechanisms, outlining strategies to mitigate Arctic warming, and developing Nordic Earth system modelling with a focus on short-lived climate forcers (SLCFs), including natural and anthropogenic aerosols. The outcome of CRAICC is reflected in more than 150 peer-reviewed scientific publications, most of which are in the CRAICC special issue of the journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. This paper presents an overview of the main scientific topics investigated in the centre and provides the reader with a state-of-the-art comprehensive summary of what has been achieved in CRAICC with links to the particular publications for further detail. Faced with a vast amount of scientific discovery, we do not claim to completely summarize the results from CRAICC within this paper, but rather concentrate here on the main results which are related to feedback loops in climate change-cryosphere interactions that affect Arctic amplification.

  • Global genomic and transcriptomic analysis of human pancreatic islets reveals novel genes influencing glucose metabolism.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 1091-6490 .- 0027-8424. ; 111:38, s. 13924-13929
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genetic variation can modulate gene expression, and thereby phenotypic variation and susceptibility to complex diseases such as type 2 diabetes (T2D). Here we harnessed the potential of DNA and RNA sequencing in human pancreatic islets from 89 deceased donors to identify genes of potential importance in the pathogenesis of T2D. We present a catalog of genetic variants regulating gene expression (eQTL) and exon use (sQTL), including many long noncoding RNAs, which are enriched in known T2D-associated loci. Of 35 eQTL genes, whose expression differed between normoglycemic and hyperglycemic individuals, siRNA of tetraspanin 33 (TSPAN33), 5'-nucleotidase, ecto (NT5E), transmembrane emp24 protein transport domain containing 6 (TMED6), and p21 protein activated kinase 7 (PAK7) in INS1 cells resulted in reduced glucose-stimulated insulin secretion. In addition, we provide a genome-wide catalog of allelic expression imbalance, which is also enriched in known T2D-associated loci. Notably, allelic imbalance in paternally expressed gene 3 (PEG3) was associated with its promoter methylation and T2D status. Finally, RNA editing events were less common in islets than previously suggested in other tissues. Taken together, this study provides new insights into the complexity of gene regulation in human pancreatic islets and better understanding of how genetic variation can influence glucose metabolism.

  • Different types of organic pop-up fertilizers in carrot cultivation: Effects on the concentrations of polyacetylenes and sugars
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scientia Horticulturae. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-4238 .- 1879-1018. ; 230, s. 126-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects on the concentration of falcarinol-type of polyacetylenes and sugars at harvest and after storage of carrots after application of different types (powder, digestate, two micro-granular) of organic pop-up fertilizer, where the fertilizer was placed in small amounts together with the seeds, were studied. Both groups of investigated compounds reflect important sensory attributes of the carrots, while polyacetylenes are considered as potentially health-promoting compounds. Results showed that the type of pop-up organic fertilizer as well as the dose can affect the concentrations of polyacetylenes and sugars. The dose of nitrogen applied did not seem to alone affect the concentration of polyacetylenes in carrots, while low amounts of applied phosphorus could be related to higher amounts of falcarindiol. The liquid digestate resulted in the highest concentrations of poly acetylenes in two of the treatments, even though the applied doses of digestate contained among the lowest amounts of nutrients. Storage resulted in both increases and decreases of total polyacetylenes, falcarindiol and falcarinol, while falcarindiol-3-acetate generally increased during storage. The sugars showed less variation due to the type or dose of fertilizer applied, as compared with the polyacetylenes.

  • Short- and Long-Term Effects of Child Neuropsychological Assessment With a Collaborative and Therapeutic Approach : A Preliminary Study
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Applied neuropsychology. Child. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2162-2965 .- 2162-2973. ; 5:2, s. 97-106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This preliminary study explored if a collaborative and therapeutic approach (CTA) could reduce self-reported psychiatric symptoms (Beck Youth Inventories [BYI]) in children referred for neuropsychological assessment. Participants included 11 children (M-age=12.4 years) receiving CTA, 11 (M-age=12.6 years) receiving parent support, and 9 (M-age=12.3 years) remaining on a waiting list. Contrary to both comparison groups, the CTA group reported fewer psychiatric symptoms on most BYI subscales after intervention, and this decrease was sustained for the Anger and Anxiety subscales at 6-month follow-up. Findings support a potential effectiveness of CTA in the neuropsychological assessment of children in a child psychiatric setting.

  • Risk factors for suicide in bipolar disorder: a cohort study of 12 850 patients
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 0001-690X .- 1600-0447. ; 138:5, s. 456-463
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ObjectiveMethodBipolar disorder carries a high risk of suicide. Identification of risk factors is important. The aim of this study was to study risk factors for suicide in a large cohort of men and women with bipolar disorder. A prospective cohort study using clinical data from the Swedish National Quality Register for Bipolar Affective Disorder (BipolaR). The outcome variable was suicide captured in the Cause of Death Register between 2004 and 2014. Hazard ratios (HR) were calculated using Cox proportional hazards models. ResultsConclusionsOf 12 850 persons (4844 men and 8006 women) with bipolar disorder, 90 (55 men and 35 women) died by suicide during the follow-up period (between 1 and 10 years). Male sex (HR 2.56), living alone (HR 2.45), previous suicide attempts (HR 4.10), comorbid psychiatric disorder (HR 2.64), recent affective episodes (HR 2.39), criminal conviction (HR 4.43), psychiatric inpatient care (HR 2.79), and involuntary commitment (HR 3.50) were significant risk factors for suicide. Several of the statistically significant risk factors for suicide in bipolar disorder differed between men and women. Risk factors for suicide in bipolar disorder include factors associated with suicide in general, but also diagnosis-specific factors.

  • A Quantitative Comparison of PRAM based Emulated Shared Memory Architectures to Current Multicore CPUs and GPUs
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 27th International Conference on Architecture of Computing Systems (ARCS), 2014, ARCS Workshops: Proc. PASA-2014 11th Workshop on Parallel Systems and Algorithms, Lübeck, Germany. - Lübeck, Germany : VDE Verlag GmbH. - 9783800735792 ; , s. 27-33
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The performance of current multicore CPUs and GPUs is limited in computations making frequent use of communication/synchronization between the subtasks executed in parallel. This is because the directory-based cache systems scale weakly and/or the cost of synchronization is high. The Emulated Shared Memory (ESM) architectures relying on multithreading and efficient synchronization mechanisms have been developed to solve these problems affecting both performance and programmability of current machines. In this paper, we compare preliminarily the performance of three hardware implemented ESM architectures with state-of-the-art multicore CPUs and GPUs. The benchmarks are selected to cover different patterns of parallel computation and therefore reveal the performance potential of ESM architectures with respect to current multicores.

  • Analysis of irradiated concrete : Microscopic and mechanical tests on concrete from a nuclear power plant containment structure
  • 2016
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Drilled concrete cores from the centralpart of the containment structure of reactor 2 in Oskarshamn weretested in the present study. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy wereapplied. The microscopy analyses performed have not documented any changes in the properties of the concrete that can be interpreted as beingdue to the specific environment to which the samples havebeen exposed. The parameters that havebeen studied includecrack patterns that could indicate volume changes inthe aggregate or cement pasteand indications of alkali silica reaction. The observed differences in the concrete surface compared to the inner part of the concrete are such that they couldoccur in concrete exposed to a normal indoor environment. There are no crack patterns to indicatethat the radiation has caused a volume increase inthe aggregate or drying shrinkage in the cement paste. Thereareno changesin the crack patterns, porosity or polarization properties that may indicate reduced mechanical strength. The damage seen in the surface of sample 5 is likely to have beencaused by a local mechanical impact and thisdamage is superficial andlocal. The mechanical properties of the concrete were evaluated by uniaxial compression tests on cylinders machined from drilled cores. Full-field strain measurement was performed on the surface of the cylinders during the compression test. Optical full-field deformation measurement was conducted usinga measurement technique based on Digital Image Correlation (DIC) with a stereoscopic camera set-up, consisting of two CCDcameras. The basic idea behind DIC is to measure the deformation of the specimen duringtesting by tracking the deformation of a surface speckle pattern in a series of digital images acquired during loading. That there is some variation in strain between the various segments is natural, since the local stiffness depends on aggregate sizeand location. The general picture is that the strain distribution is relatively uniform along the length of the cylinder, which indicates that the tested cylinders do not exhibit any degradation of mechanical properties. There is also no significant difference between the cylinders taken towards the insideof the structure, compared with thosetaken towards the outside. The overall conclusion is that the tests carried out do not indicate any degradation of the mechanical properties, and that the properties in general are equivalent for the cores taken towards the inside and the outside of the structure.

  • A Central Role for GRB10 in Regulation of Islet Function in Man.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: PLoS Genetics. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1553-7404 .- 1553-7390. ; 10:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Variants in the growth factor receptor-bound protein 10 (GRB10) gene were in a GWAS meta-analysis associated with reduced glucose-stimulated insulin secretion and increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) if inherited from the father, but inexplicably reduced fasting glucose when inherited from the mother. GRB10 is a negative regulator of insulin signaling and imprinted in a parent-of-origin fashion in different tissues. GRB10 knock-down in human pancreatic islets showed reduced insulin and glucagon secretion, which together with changes in insulin sensitivity may explain the paradoxical reduction of glucose despite a decrease in insulin secretion. Together, these findings suggest that tissue-specific methylation and possibly imprinting of GRB10 can influence glucose metabolism and contribute to T2D pathogenesis. The data also emphasize the need in genetic studies to consider whether risk alleles are inherited from the mother or the father.
