  • Self-confidence and disordered eating amongst martial artists : a cross-sectional study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Asian Journal of Sports Medicine. - : Kowsar Publishing Company. - 2008-000X .- 2008-7209. ; 11:4, s. 1-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Extreme dieting is a well-known phenomenon in combat sports, and still, little research has explored the link between extreme dieting and confidence levels among martial artists. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, extreme dieting and sport-specific self-confidence among 111 Swedish athletes practicing mixed martial arts (MMA) or Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) were examined. Athletes completed an online survey containing the Eating Disorder Examination questionnaire (EDE-Q) and the Trait Sport-Confidence inventory (TSCI). Results: The results showed that MMA athletes dieted in more extreme ways than BJJ athletes, primarily via restricted eating. They also had higher sport-specific self-confidence, which was positively correlated with weight loss. BJJ athletes used less restrictive eating than MMA athletes, but those who did diet in extreme ways experienced lower self-confidence compared to MMA athletes. Conclusions: The results are consistent with previous studies showing rapid weight loss in MMA athletes and suggest that some martial artists are at a particular risk of extreme dieting and possible sequelae. There is a link between self-confidence and weight loss, but it seems to allude to a comprehensive explanation and is in need of further research.

  • "A small pawn in a big game" : an exploration of doctoral students' experience of co-supervisory relationships
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Further and Higher Education. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0309-877X .- 0013-1326 .- 1469-9486. ; 47:9, s. 1169-1181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Co-supervision of doctoral theses is on the rise worldwide, but we know little of the relational dynamics of the co-supervisory team and doctoral student. These teams often must work together for several years, during which supervisors may come and go. We interviewed 19 doctoral students about their experiences of co-supervision and found a complex team climate characterised by prior relations, merit- and network-gaining activities, and 'cushioning' adopted by supervisors to support the student during stressful periods. Doctoral students viewed themselves as passive and dependent - as pawns in a bigger game - suggesting that co-supervision might uphold the traditionally strong hierarchical structure of academia. We therefore suggest that all co-supervision teams discuss the roles and structure of supervision before commencing a research project.

  • Bullying, health complaints, and self-rated health among school-aged children and adolescents
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Medical Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 0300-0605 .- 1473-2300. ; 48:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The aim of the current study was to examine whether health complaints and self-reported health were associated with bullying victimization in a large cohort of Icelandic children and adolescents. Methods: In this study, we used data from a school-based cross-sectional survey, specifically, the Icelandic contribution to the international research network Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC). The study population included all students throughout Iceland in grades 6, 8, and 10 (mean age 13 years, standard deviation 1.61). The participation rate was 84% (N = 11,018). Participating students completed an anonymous standardized questionnaire in their classrooms. Results: Bullying victimization was associated with feeling depressed (odds ratio 2.61), having difficulty falling asleep, dizziness, and low self-reported health. No differences were found between sex and age groups. Conclusions: Children and adolescents who are bullied appear to more often experience depression, difficulties falling asleep, dizziness, and poor health; however, health complaints were also relatively high among non-bullied children and adolescents. Bullying prevention measures must be implemented in children’s and adolescents’ social environments. In addition to assessing bullying interventions, further research should focus on methods of enhancing resilience in this population.

  • “Good food equals good health” : a focus group study of adolescent boys’ perceptions of eating and weight
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: BMC Public Health. - : BioMed Central Ltd.. - 1471-2458. ; 24:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background : Disordered eating refers to unhealthy, sometimes excessive eating including so-called compensatory behaviours such as extreme dieting or voluntary vomiting. Between 24% and 30% of adolescent boys are suggested to engage in disordered eating, making it a significant public health issue. However, current instruments for assessing disordered eating among adolescents have been primarily developed and validated for girls and women, which may make for flawed assessment of boys. The aim of this study is to shed light on adolescent boys’ perceptions of eating, weight, and food intake to better understand their perspectives in service of disordered eating research. Methods : This exploratory study was conducted from May to November 2022 using focus groups with a total of 39 adolescent boys (aged 12–19 years) who attended 7th to 12th grade in one of four schools in Southern Sweden. In addition, participants completed a form with questions on background demographics and eating habits. The transcripts of the focus group discussions were analysed using thematic analysis.  Results : The quantitative data showed that around one third of the adolescent boys were overweight or obese. They ate at least one meal per day with the family and ate healthy food about five days per week and unhealthy food about three. Analysis of the qualitative data yielded six themes: The intertwined relationship between food and one’s health, “Don’t worry, food makes you happy,” “To be hungry or not. That is the question,” Boys DO care about appearances, Dieting and weight gain, and Disordered eating is a tricky matter.  Conclusion : Adolescent boys appeared to have a good understanding of food and healthy eating. They also experienced body positivity and seemed to have only minor issues regarding their weight. The primarily pathological perspective used to measure disordered eating among girls seems in need of revision to adhere to boys’ thoughts and ideas regarding eating and weight.

  • Transition to Activity Based Workplaces (ABWs) in the Post Covid-19 Era
  • 2024
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This abstract explores the expectations and concerns associated with ABWs during a transition to ABW in a Swedish municipality (620 employees).Modern work life is changing rapidly, not at least because of the covid -19 pandemic. In the Post Covid – 19 Era many workplaces have changed towards more flexible work arrangements. This has increased the implementation of so called ABWs, not at least among public sector workplaces.Previous research has revealed that expectations surrounding ABWs relate to increased collaboration and employee well-being. By providing a variety of work settings, ABWs enable employees to choose spaces that align with their tasks, fostering communication and idea sharing. Furthermore, ABWs are anticipated to enhance employee satisfaction and productivity through increased autonomy and flexibility.Concerns exist regarding noise distractions, lack of privacy, and effective leadership. Additionally, the absence of enclosed private areas may raise concerns about confidentiality. Leadership are crucial in ABWs to create a culture of trust and collaboration. In this study we explored qualitative data from around 600 municipality employees who were in the middle of transition from cell-offices to ABW. The employees were handed a questionnaire with questions of how they perceived their work environment from a social, organizational, and psychological perspective. The survey also included three open-ended questions: What expectations do you have for your new workplace? what risks do you see in your new workplace? and, what opportunities do you see with your new workplace? This paper aims to account for employees' perceptions of moving to an ABW. Overall, understanding and addressing these expectations and concerns are essential for successful implementation of ABWs and to maximize their potential benefits while mitigating potential challenges.

  • Disease progression modelling reveals heterogeneity in trajectories of Lewy-type α-synuclein pathology
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - 2041-1723. ; 15:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lewy body (LB) diseases, characterized by the aggregation of misfolded α-synuclein proteins, exhibit notable clinical heterogeneity. This may be due to variations in accumulation patterns of LB neuropathology. Here we apply a data-driven disease progression model to regional neuropathological LB density scores from 814 brain donors with Lewy pathology. We describe three inferred trajectories of LB pathology that are characterized by differing clinicopathological presentation and longitudinal antemortem clinical progression. Most donors (81.9%) show earliest pathology in the olfactory bulb, followed by accumulation in either limbic (60.8%) or brainstem (21.1%) regions. The remaining donors (18.1%) initially exhibit abnormalities in brainstem regions. Early limbic pathology is associated with Alzheimer’s disease-associated characteristics while early brainstem pathology is associated with progressive motor impairment and substantial LB pathology outside of the brain. Our data provides evidence for heterogeneity in the temporal spread of LB pathology, possibly explaining some of the clinical disparities observed in Lewy body disease.
