  • Essays on Labor Market Disparities and Discrimination : Immigration, Education and Gender
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The thesis consists of four papers, summarized as follows. Do Host Country Educations Even Out the Playing Field? Immigrant-Native Labor Market Gaps in Sweden This study follows a cohort of students from Swedish compulsory school graduation in 1988 until 2002 to document differences in education, including grades and field of education, and labor market outcomes between immigrants and natives. Results indicate initial differences in youth labor market status and long term differences in employment rates, most notably for those with Non-European backgrounds. Acculturation Identity and Higher Education: Is There a Trade-off Between Ethnic Identity and Education? This paper examines the role of identification to home and host cultures on the pursuit of higher educations for individuals with immigrant backgrounds. Identity is defined according to a two-dimensional acculturation framework based on strength of identification to both ethnic background cultures and the majority culture. The results put into question the premise of oppositional identities. Is It How You Look or Speak That Matters? -An Experimental Study Exploring the Mechanisms of Ethnic Discrimination Using a laboratory experiment, we explore the following questions: Are beliefs about performance affected by if a candidate is perceived to have looks that are non-stereotypical for the dominant population? Do these beliefs change if the candidate has a native-like vs. accented speech? We find that candidates not perceived as stereotypically Swedish are considered to be worse performers. When candidates are presented by both looks and speech, we find negative beliefs for candidates that speak Swedish with a foreign-accent. Sector Differences in the Glass Ceiling in Sweden -Is Occupational Segregation the Explanation? This paper explores sector differences in how the gender wage gap varies across the wage distribution and examines the role of occupational segregation in explaining this variation for Sweden. Results indicate that the phenomenon known as the glass ceiling is stronger in the public sector than in the private sector. This difference is found to be due to occupational segregation.

  • Miljöanpassad energiproduktion och arbetsmiljö. Tillverkning av träpellets
  • 2002

  • Mixed Virtual Reality Simulation -Taking Endoscopic Simulation One Step Further
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Medicine Meets Virtual Reality 18. - : IOS Press. - 9781607507062 - 9781607507055 ; 163, s. 144-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This pilot study aimed to assess medical students' appraisals of a "mixed" virtual reality simulation for endoscopic surgery (with a virtual patient case in addition to a virtual colonoscopy) as well as the impact of this simulation set-up on students' performance. Findings indicate that virtual patients can enhance contextualization of simulated endoscopy and thus facilitate an authentic learning environment, which is important in order to increase motivation.

  • Carboxyl groups do not play the major role in binding metal cations by graphene oxide
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics - PCCP. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 23:32, s. 17430-17439
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we investigate the chemical interactions of Mn2+ ions with graphene oxides, prepared by Hummers' (HGO) and Brodie's (BGO) methods in aqueous solutions by means of NMR relaxation. Carboxyl groups, which are always present in HGO in significant quantities, are often considered as the main binding sites for metal ions. Here we demonstrate that metal ions are bound efficiently by BGO, containing a negligibly small quantity of carboxyl groups. The difference in the shape of the relaxation curves is due mostly to the difference in the solubility and exfoliation degree of the two GO samples in aqueous media. HGO binds Mn2+ in the broad pH range, including highly acidic solutions, while BGO binds only at pH > 6, since it is not dispersible in water at lower pH values. The ability of BGO to chemically bind Mn2+ despite lacking sulfate and carboxyl groups, coupled with our earlier published findings, strongly suggests that carboxyl groups do not play the main role in binding metal ions by GO, as is commonly believed. We propose that metal ions initiate a significant transformation in the GO structure to attain the most efficient coordination of metal ions. This reorganization might involve the metal cation induced C-C bond cleavage with the formation of enols at the newly formed edges.

  • Using 87Sr/86Sr LA-MC-ICP-MS Transects within Modern and Ancient Calcite Crystals to Determine Fluid Flow Events in Deep Granite Fractures
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Geosciences. - : MDPI AG. - 2076-3263. ; 10, s. 1-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The strontium isotope signature (87Sr/86Sr) of calcite precipitated in rock fractures and faults is a frequently used tool to trace paleofluid flow. However, bedrock fracture networks, such as in Precambrian cratons, have often undergone multiple fracture reactivations resulting in complex sequences of fracture mineral infillings. This includes numerous discrete calcite crystal overgrowths. Conventional 87Sr/86Sr analysis of dissolved bulk samples of such crystals is not feasible as they will result in mixed signatures of several growth zonations. In addition, the zonations are too fine-grained for sub-sampling using micro-drilling. Here, we apply high spatial resolution 87Sr/86Sr spot analysis(80 um) in transects through zoned calcite crystals in deep Paleoproterozoic granitoid fractures using laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) to trace discrete signs of paleofluid flow events. We compare the outermost calcite growth zone with 87Sr/86Sr values of the present-day groundwater sampled in the same boreholes to distinguish potential modern precipitates. We then connect our results to previously reported radiometric dating and C and O isotope signatures to understand the temporal history and physicochemical evolution of fluid flow within the fractures. Comparisons of modern calcite precipitated in a borehole over a period of 17 years with modern waters prove the concept of using 87Sr/86Sr as a marker for fluid origin in this environment and for how 87Sr/86Sr changed during marine water infiltration. Intermittent calcite precipitation over very long time spans is indicated in calcite of the currently open fractures, showing an evolution of 87Sr/86Sr from ~0.705–0.707—a population dated to ~1.43 billion years—to crystal overgrowth values at ~0.715–0.717 that overlap with the present-day groundwater values. This shows that high spatial resolution Sr isotope analysis of fine-scaled growth zonation within single calcite crystals is applicable for tracing episodic fluid flow in fracture networks.
