  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to provide a short overview of the changes in the Nordic media landscape and media use over time. Since the mid-1990s a completely new medium, the Internet, has become a part of daily life for many. Digital development and convergence have resulted in new technical equipment and more ways to experience media content. Digitization has also brought about a sharp increase in media output from traditional media, with a more fragmented offering of specialised channels and titles as a consequence. There are more media in the Nordic countries than ever before, and people in the region have quickly gained access to new technologies and household equipment. Nevertheless, media habits have remained rather stable over the years. The time spent with media during an average day – approximately six hours – also seems to have remained unchanged: over the course of 25 years it has increased with no more than half an hour. The sharp increase in media output has, however, led to increasingly fragmented media audiences. Major daily media – newspapers, radio and TV – have retained their position in people’s everyday lives, but alongside these, the public’s attention is distributed over more and more channels. Changes have also been noticed especially in young people’s media habits. The use of new technology is a part of their lifestyle in a clearly different way than is the case with middle-aged people. Here we can imagine new patterns of use that new generations will bring with them into the future.
