  • Highly deformed rotational structures in 136Pm
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813. ; 62:3, s. 313041-313045
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Four highly deformed structures in the odd-odd nucleus 13661Pm75 were observed via the 105Pd(35Cl,2p2n) reaction at 180 and 173 MeV using the GAMMASPHERE γ-ray spectrometer and the Microball charged-particle detector array. Quadrupole moment measurements were performed on all of the bands. In contrast to lighter odd-Ζ Pm and Pr nuclei, bands based on the g9/2[404]9/2 proton orbital were not observed. Instead, the four observed sequences are assigned as a coupling of an i13/2 neutron with the low-Ω h11/2 and mixed d5/2g7/2 orbitals. Comparisons with neighboring highly deformed structures are discussed and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations for 136Pm are presented.

  • Protection afforded by heat shock protein 60 from Francisella tularensis is due to copurified lipopolysaccharide.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Infection and Immunity. - 0019-9567 .- 1098-5522. ; 72:7, s. 4109-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heat shock proteins (Hsps) have attracted significant attention as protective antigens against a range of diseases caused by bacterial pathogens. However, more recently there have been suggestions that the protective response is due to the presence of peptide components other than Hsps. We have shown that mice that had been immunized with purified heat shock protein 60 (Hsp60) isolated from Francisella tularensis were protected against a subsequent challenge with some strains of the bacterium. However, this protection appeared to be due to trace amounts of lipopolysaccharide, which were too low to be detected by using the Limulus amoebocyte lysate assay. This finding raises the possibility that the protection afforded by other bacterial Hsp60 proteins may be due to trace quantities of polysaccharide antigens carried by and acting in conjunction with the Hsps.

  • Global change and arctic ecosystems : is lichen decline a function of increases in vascular plant biomass?
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Ecology. - : Wiley. - 0022-0477 .- 1365-2745. ; 89:6, s. 984-994
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1 Macrolichens are important for the functioning and biodiversity of cold northern ecosystems and their reindeer-based cultures and economics. 2 We hypothesized that, in climatically milder parts of the Arctic, where ecosystems have relatively dense plant canopies, climate warming and/or increased nutrient availability leads to decline in macrolichen abundance as a function of increased abundance of vascular plants. In more open high-arctic or arctic-alpine plant communities such a relationship should be absent. To test this, we synthesized cross-continental arctic vegetation data from ecosystem manipulation experiments simulating mostly warming and increased nutrient availability, and compared these with similar data from natural environmental gradients. 3 Regressions between abundance or biomass of macrolichens and vascular plants were consistently negative across the subarctic and mid-arctic experimental studies. Such a pattern did not emerge in the coldest high-arctic or arctic-alpine sites. The slopes of the negative regressions increased across 10 sites as the climate became milder (as indicated by a simple climatic index) or the vegetation denser (greater site above-ground biomass). 4 Seven natural vegetation gradients in the lower-altitude sub- and mid-arctic zone confirmed the patterns seen in the experimental studies, showing consistent negative relationships between abundance of macrolichens and vascular plants. 5 We conclude that the data supported the hypothesis. Macrolichens in climatically milder arctic ecosystems may decline if and where global changes cause vascular plants to increase in abundance. 6 However, a refining of our findings is needed, for instance by integrating other abiotic and biotic effects such as reindeer grazing feedback on the balance between vascular plants and lichens.

  • Plasma vasopressin concentrations and Fos protein expression in the supraoptic nucleus following osmotic stimulation or hypovolaemia in the ovariectomized rat: effect of oestradiol replacement.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of neuroendocrinology. - : Wiley. - 0953-8194 .- 1365-2826. ; 16:3, s. 191-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The set points for vasopressin release in response to increasing plasma osmolality and hypovolaemia alter with reproductive status. Here, we studied stimulated vasopressin release following ovariectomy and oestrogen replacement, neuronal activity being measured in terms of immediate early gene expression. Observations were carried out on three groups of female Sprague-Dawley rats. The first group were ovariectomized. The second group were given a subcutaneous oestrogen implant (20 microg/ml oestradiol-17 beta) at the time of ovariectomy. The final group were left intact and observations performed at oestrus. Two weeks after ovariectomy, vascular cannulae were implanted under anaesthesia and at least 48 h allowed for recovery before hormone release was stimulated by infusion of 1.5 M NaCl for 90 min, or hypovolaemia induced by the removal of 10 mg/kg body weight taken in 1-ml aliquots. Blood pressure was monitored, and blood samples were taken for determination of packed cell volume and plasma vasopressin and osmolality. After a minimum of 48 h, the challenge was repeated, the rats anaesthetized, and perfused with 4% paraformaldehyde. Brain sections were processed for immunocytochemical detection of Fos protein. Vasopressin release in response to both stimuli was reduced in ovariectomized compared to intact rats and the response could be substantially restored by oestradiol replacement. The number of Fos positive cells in the supraoptic nucleus of oestrogen-replaced rats was significantly higher than in the ovariectomized group and not statistically different from the intact group.

  • Rotational structures near 40h in La-123
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 68:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The neutron-deficient nucleus La-123 was studied via the Mo-92(Ca-40,2ap) reaction at a beam energy of 184 MeV. Previously known bands were extended to a much higher spin, and in two cases the structures are now observed near 40 (h) over bar. In addition, three new sequences were identified and linked into previously known bands. The lowest (pi,alpha)=(+,-1/2) structure displays characteristics similar to those of analogous bands in La-127,La-129, which have been proposed as examples of smooth band termination. Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations were compared with the experimental data in La-123 to determine whether this band is approaching a terminating state as well.
