  • Densification of the eggshell powder by spark plasma sintering
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Alloys and Compounds. - : Elsevier. - 0925-8388 .- 1873-4669. ; 962
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chicken eggshells (eggshells) are the bio-waste produced during day-to-day egg consumption by humans. The eggshell contains calcium carbonate (CaCO3) along with several other elements such as Si, Mg, K, P, Na, etc., which enables its application for human bio-implants. Our research work aims to practically implement the eggshell powder as the bio-implant, for which, the study of the densification behavior of the eggshell powder is required. Hence, the present paper represents the densification behavior of the crystalline eggshell powder by spark plasma sintering. The eggshell powders were irregular in shape with a wide particle size distribution. The eggshell powder was sintered at six varying temperatures, i.e., 250 °C, 500 °C, 750 °C, 850 °C, 900 °C, and 1000 °C. The consolidated samples were characterized through SEM, FTIR, and XRD analysis, and the optimum spark plasma sintering temperature was determined. The consolidation of eggshells at 850 °C not only avoids the calcination process (due to the application of pressure) but gives optimum density and hardness making it an optimum condition for consolidating eggshells into compacts.

  • Superamphiphobic overhang structured coating on a biobased material
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 389, s. 135-143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A superamphiphobic coating on a biobased material shows extreme liquid repellency with static contact angles (CA) greater than 150 degrees and roll-off angles less than 10 degrees against water, ethylene glycol, diiodomethane and olive oil, and a CA for hexadecane greater than 130 degrees. The coating consisting of titanic nanoparticles deposited by liquid flame spray (LFS) and hydrophobized using plasma-polymerized perfluorohexane was applied to a birch hardwood. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging after sample preparation by UV laser ablation of coated areas revealed that capped structures were formed and this, together with the geometrically homogeneous wood structure, fulfilled the criteria for overhang structures to occur. The coating showed high hydrophobic durability by still being non-wetted after 500 000 water drop impacts, and this is discussed in relation to geometrical factors and wetting forces. The coating was semi-transparent with no significant coloration. A self-cleaning effect was demonstrated with both water and oil droplets. A self-cleanable, durable and highly transparent superamphiphobic coating based on a capped overhang structure has a great potential for commercial feasibility in a variety of applications, here exemplified for a biobased material.

  • Absence in Substantia: Frequency
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Jakarta, Baik Art, 10 Jan - 24 Feb 2024.
  • Konstnärligt arbete (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Absence in Substantia developed through analyses of data within what I came to call the Protocols of Killings archive. This archive, declassified in 2018, contains the once-classified cables that passed through the US Embassy in Jakarta spanning the years 1964-1968. It’s a wide-ranging record of communications during the critical period surrounding the 1965-66 Indonesian mass killings. When I started analysing the archive, I found 798 documents titled “Withdrawal Notice.” These are placeholders of documents that are considered still sensitive, and so they were retracted during the official evaluation that precedes declassification. So they’re sort of the secrets that are made even more secrets, even more restricted. This is where I extend on Walters’ logic: instead of seeing the closure as a problem, I focus on this disclosure-generated closure as potential. I also bring in my personal experiences of liminal death, and political scientist Oliver Kearns’s work on the absence left by drone strikes. Kearns argues that “A political response to covert strikes must go beyond 'filling in' absences and address how absence gains meaning in implicit ways.” From these withdrawal notices, I extracted dates referring to the original documents, to output frequency and density graphs of these retractions over time. The resulting bird's eye views show a pattern that peaks around the first date of the killings, 1 October 1965, which you can see as the pinkish-red thread cutting vertically on this work. Here I co-opt the act of closure into disclosure. I know this cooptation quite well. My grandfather’s liminal death left an unfilled lacuna, a particular hole right in the heart of my family, so to say. But we knew that there is no point filling this hole with anything else, because without this hole in its heart, my family’s heart is never whole. In other words, this wholeness that fully considers the hole is exactly why absence can be of substance. I think of this as a method of resistance—this Absence in Substantia. Absence in Substantia: Frequency, is showing the frequency graph on one of its two sides. Another work in the pair, showing the density graph, is being displayed in my other solo exhibition at RMIT Gallery in Melbourne, Australia. The other side of these works suggests the magnitude of the documents retracted from the archive, like an eruption of secrets from a document shredder, like the remains of something that’s destroyed with a pronounced presence.

  • Background factors associated with endodontic treatment due to caries in young permanent teeth
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Acta Odontologica Scandinavica. - : Informa Healthcare. - 0001-6357 .- 1502-3850. ; 65:4, s. 219-223
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to assess the association between background factors and future endodontic treatment due to caries in young permanent teeth. Material and methods. The material comprised all 19-year-olds born in 1979 in a city in Sweden who had experienced endodontic treatment due to caries in permanent teeth and a control group with no endodontic treatment. From dental records, the following independent variables were derived from age 7 to age 19: immigrant background, caries prevalence (DMFT values) at age 10, occurrence of dental anxiety, and missed or cancelled appointments before endodontic treatment. The outcome variable was presence or absence of endodontic treatment due to caries. Bivariate analysis and a multiple logistic regression model were used to analyse the data. Results. In the bivariate analyses, all independent variables except cancelled appointments were statistically significantly associated with future endodontic treatment. Of these, immigrant background did not remain as a statistically significant factor in the multiple regression model. The highest odds ratios were 4.3 for DMFT at age 10 and 4.1 for 20% missed appointments. Conclusion. In the present sample, with a relatively high proportion of individuals with an immigrant background, DMFT at age 10, many missed appointments and dental anxiety were all risk indicators for future endodontic treatment due to caries up to age 19. Key Words: Dental anxiety, dental avoidance, dental caries, immigrants, risk assessment

  • SPECULATE, COLLABORATE, DEFINE - TEXTILE THINKING FOR FUTURE WAYS OF LIVING
  • 2017
  • Konstnärligt arbete (refereegranskat)abstract
    • About the exhibitionHow can we design for the future? In this avant-garde exhibition architects, interaction, fashion and textile designers show their works in progress when they speculate about, collaborate on, and define how to strengthen the foundations of design for more sustainable forms of living. The exhibition Speculate, collaborate, define – textile thinking for future ways of living, is a work in progress by the PhD students in the ArcInTexETN project. ArcInTexETN is an EU-funded training network of early stage researchers exploring new expressions of living through textile thinking.  They collaborate in three scales – building, interior, and body – looking into methods for turning current scientific knowledge into the design of new forms of living. With videos as their main medium, the students present different takes on the subject. In “Ahti”, a speculative short film about the first human being born in space, the story is set in the future. It’s 2076 and there is no water left on our planet Earth. Ahti wears the same suit every day, like a second skin. The skin has different properties that protect him and allow him to walk on any surface, levitate, communicate and store energy.Have you heard about the Wolpertinger? It’s a hybrid animal whose appearance evokes the idea that, however different the parts are, they constitute a whole, functioning organism. With the animal as an analogue, a collection of videos are projections of different pieces of work, showing a patchwork of cooperation, exposing the working process of collaborative design. The film “What is interior?” presents an interior landscape, a shifting view of this paradoxical space, narrated by a linguistic review that argues to define the term interior. The film gives an examination of the definitions that frame the term, as well as creating the fleeting textures that shapes it.In addition to the video projections there are also three individual installations. So, bring your nose and your curiosity! This is not only an audio-visual exhibition.
