  • High temperature oxidation of Fe-Al and Fe-Cr-Al alloys : The role of Cr as a chemically active element
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Corrosion Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0010-938X .- 1879-0496. ; 52:10, s. 3394-3404
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Good high-temperature corrosion resistance of Fe-Al alloys in oxidizing environments is due to the alpha-Al2O3 film which is formed on the surface provided temperature is above 900 degrees C and the Al-content of the alloy exceeds the critical value. Ab initio calculations combined with experiments on Fe-13Al, Fe-18Al, Fe-23Al and Fe-10Cr-10Al alloys show that the beneficial effect of Cr on the oxidation resistance is significantly related to bulk effects. The comparison of experimental and calculated results indicates a clear correlation between the Fe-Cr chemical potential difference and the formation of the protective oxide scales. • Third element effect in the surface zone of Fe-Cr-Al alloys
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 81:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The third element effect to improve the high temperature corrosion resistance of the low-Al Fe-Cr-Al alloys is suggested to involve a mechanism that boosts the recovering of the Al concentration to the required level in the Al-depleted zone beneath the oxide layer. We propose that the key factor in this mechanism is the coexistent Cr depletion that helps to maintain a sufficient Al content in the depleted zone. Several previous experiments related to our study support that conditions for such a mechanism to be functional prevail in real oxidation processes of Fe-Cr-Al alloys.

  • Influence of long-term postmenopausal hormone-replacement therapy on estimated structural bone strength: A study in discordant monozygotic twins
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. - : Wiley. - 0884-0431. ; 26:3, s. 546-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although postmenopausal hormone-replacement therapy (HRT) is known to prevent fractures, knowledge on the influence of long-term HRT on bone strength and its determinants other than areal bone mineral density is scarce. This study used a genetically controlled design with 24 monozygotic female twin pairs aged 54 to 72 years in which one cotwin was using HRT (mean duration 8 years) and the other had never used HRT. Estimated bone strength, cross-sectional area, volumetric bone mineral density, bone mineral mass, and cross-sectional density and mass distributions were assessed in the tibial shaft, distal tibia, and distal radius with peripheral computed tomography (pQCT). In the tibial shaft, HRT users had 9% [95% confidence interval (CI) 3%-15%] higher estimated bending strength than their nonusing cotwins. Larger cortical area and higher cortical bone mineral density accounted for this difference. The cortex was larger in the HRT users in the endocortical region. In the distal tibia, estimated compressive strength was 24% (95% CI 9%-40%) higher and in the distal radius 26% (95% CI 11%-41%) higher in the HRT users than in their nonusing cotwins owing to higher volumetric bone mineral density. No difference between users and nonusers was observed in total bone cross-sectional area in any measured bone site. The added mineral mass in the HRT users was distributed evenly within and between bone sites. In postmenopausal women, long-term HRT preserves estimated bone strength systemically by preventing bone mineral loss similarly in body weight-loaded and non-weight-loaded bone. • Atomistic study of surfaces and interfaces of Fe-Cr and Fe-Cr-Al alloys
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical and numerical simulation of materials processing VII. - : Trans Tech Publications Inc.. - 9783037857281 ; , s. 728-733
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Surface and interface properties of Fe-Cr, Fe-Al, and Fe-Cr-Al are studied using Exact Muffin-Tin Orbitals and Monte Carlo methods and with x-ray photoelectron and Auger electron techniques. Surface composition is investigated as a function of oxidation (heating) time. Hard x ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) is used to scan non destructively the compositions below the surface. It is found that Cr boosts the Al segregation to the surface.

  • A new challenge for meteorological measurements : The meteoMet project-Metrology for meteorology
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : AIP. - 0094-243X .- 1551-7616. - 9780735411784 ; , s. 1030-1035
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate change and its consequences require immediate actions in order to safeguard the environment and economy in Europe and in the rest of world. Aiming to enhance data reliability and reduce uncertainties in climate observations, a joint research project called MeteoMet-Metrology for Meteorology started in October 2011 coordinated by the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRiM). The project is focused on the traceability of measurements involved in climate change: surface and upper air measurements of temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction, solar irradiance and reciprocal influences between measurands. This project will provide the first definition at the European level of validated climate parameters with associated uncertainty budgets and novel criteria for interpretation of historical data series. The big challenge is the propagation of a metrological measurement perspective to meteorological observations. When such an approach will be adopted the requirement of reliable data and robust datasets over wide scales and long terms could be better met.

  • A comparative study of oxygen loss on in situ heating in PrMnO3 and BaMnO3
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Modern Physics B. - 0217-9792. ; 25:9, s. 1235-1250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have thoroughly investigated the Oxygen loss in PrMnO3 and BaMnO3 the end members of the AMnO(3) system, on in situ heating in a reducing at This was done to drive some oxygen out from them and thus possibly alter the valence of the Mn cation. Sample characterization was done through X-ray diffraction and SEM measurements. The core-level photoemission point to oxygen loss from only BaMnO3 changing some of Mn4+ to Mn3+ in it, transfer of some spectral weight to the highly localized Fehrenbacher-Rice states and an increased Mn 3d-O 2p hybridization. Magnetization measurements show that at low temperatures, the samples depict a canted antiferromagnetic ordering.

  • Initial Oxidation of Fe-Al and Fe-Cr-Al Alloys : Cr as an Alumina Booster
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Oxidation of Metals. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0030-770X .- 1573-4889. ; 76:3-4, s. 331-346
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The boosting effect of Cr on the growth of the protective alumina scale on Fe-Al alloys is investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Using low oxygen pressure the surface chemistry of the alloys is monitored starting from the first moments of oxidation. Chromium affects the Fe/Al surface-bulk exchange which is clearly detected by analyzing the measured surface concentrations within the atomic concentration models. Experimental results presented are in good agreement with the previous ones obtained by experiments at ambient conditions and ab initio calculations.
