  • A standardized procedure for surveillance and monitoring European habitats and provision of spatial data
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Landscape Ecology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0921-2973 .- 1572-9761. ; 23, s. 11-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Both science and policy require a practical, transmissible, and reproducible procedure for surveillance and monitoring of European habitats, which can produce statistics integrated at the landscape level. Over the last 30 years, landscape ecology has developed rapidly, and many studies now require spatial data on habitats. Without rigorous rules, changes from baseline records cannot be separated reliably from background noise. A procedure is described that satisfies these requirements and can provide consistent data for Europe, to support a range of policy initiatives and scientific projects. The methodology is based on classical plant life forms, used in biogeography since the nineteenth century, and on their statistical correlation with the primary environmental gradient. Further categories can therefore be identified for other continents to assist large scale comparisons and modelling. The model has been validated statistically and the recording procedure tested in the field throughout Europe. A total of 130 General Habitat Categories (GHCs) is defined. These are enhanced by recording environmental, site and management qualifiers to enable flexible database interrogation. The same categories are applied to areal, linear and point features to assist recording and subsequent interpretation at the landscape level. The distribution and change of landscape ecological parameters, such as connectivity and fragmentation, can then be derived and their significance interpreted.

  • A novel approach for the homogenization of cellulose to use micro-amounts for stable isotope analyses
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry. - : Wiley. - 0951-4198 .- 1097-0231. ; 23:13, s. 1934-1940
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate reconstructions using stable isotopes from tree-rings are steadily increasing. The investigations concentrate mostly on cellulose due to its high stability. In recent years the available amount of cellulose has steadily decreased, mainly because micro-structures of plant material have had to be analyzed. Today, the amounts of cellulose being studied are frequently in the milligram and often in the microgram range. Consequently, homogeneity problems with regard to the stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen from cellulose have occurred and these have called for new methods in the preparation of cellulose for reliable isotope analyses. Three different methods were tested for preparing isotopically homogenous cellulose, namely mechanical grinding, freezing by liquid nitrogen with subsequent milling and ultrasonic breaking of cellulose fibres. The best precision of isotope data was achieved by freeze-milling and ultrasonic breaking. However, equipment for freeze-milling is expensive and the procedure is labour-intensive. Mechanical grinding resulted in a rather high loss of material and it is also labour-intensive. The use of ultrasound for breaking cellulose fibres proved to be the best method in terms of rapidity of sample throughput, avoidance of sample loss, precision of isotope results, ease of handling, and cost.

  • Phase I/II clinical and pharmacokinetic study evaluating a fully human monoclonal antibody against EGFr (HuMax-EGFr) in patients with advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Radiotherapy and Oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-0887 .- 0167-8140. ; 85:1, s. 24-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To assess safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics and clinical activity of HuMax-EGFr in patients with SCCHN. Patients and methods: Twenty-eight patients with SCCHN were enrolled. The study comprised a single-dose escalation part for assessment of safety issues followed by a repeat dose extension including 4 weekly infusions at the same doses. Efficacy and metabolic response were evaluated according to RECIST by CT and FDG-PET. Results: Most frequently reported adverse event was rash. All but one event were CTC grade 1 or 2 and a dose-dependent relationship was indicated. Duration of skin reactions varied from few days to 2 months. No DLTs were observed and MTD was not reached. In the two highest dose groups, 7 of 11 patients obtained a PR or SD and 9 patients obtained metabolic PR or SD. Conclusions: HuMax-EGFr can be safety administered in doses up to 8 mg/kg, and preliminary data on tumour response are encouraging. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.

  • Ethical Issues in Cancer Register Follow-Up of Hormone Treatment in Adolescence
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Public Health Ethics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1754-9973 .- 1754-9981. ; 2:1, s. 30-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the 1970s, estrogen have sometimes been used in adolescent girls to reduce very tall adult expected height.Worries about long-term effects have led to a proposal to link treatment data with cancer registers. How shouldone deal with informed consent for such a study? We designed a qualitative study with semi-structured telephoneinterviews. From 1200 women who were to be followed-up in cancer registers, we randomly selected 22 women.Major themes were a wish to be involved and a positive attitude to the proposed register research. The womendid not express worry after reading the study protocol, but did convey considerable frustration that this researchhad not been initiated earlier. Active consent was not seen as crucial. We found strong interest in a high participationrate and a concern over missing data. The selection of information and consent or the decision to goahead without consent in register follow-up is a delicate balancing act. Study participants wish to be contacted, but acknowledge the primary goal of answering important questions. Our study provides support for safeguardingprivacy in epidemiological linkage studies and in follow-up of medical treatment without losing the scientificvalue by requesting for informed consent.
