  • Flat tube heat exchangers - Direct and indirect noise levels in heat pump applications
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Applied Thermal Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 1359-4311. ; 66:1-2, s. 104-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the outdoor unit of an air-source heat pump the fan is a major noise source. The noise level from the fan is dependent on its state of operation: high air-flow and high pressure drop often result in higher noise levels. In addition, an evaporator that obstructs an air flow is a noise source in itself, something that may contribute to the total noise level. To be able to reduce the noise level, heat exchanger designs other than the common finned round tubes were investigated in this study. Three types of heat exchanger were evaluated to detect differences in noise level and air-side heat transfer performance at varying air flow. The measured sound power level from all the heat exchangers was low in comparison to the fan sound power level (direct effect). However, the heat exchanger design was shown to have an important influence on the sound power level from the fan (indirect effect). One of the heat exchangers with flat tubes was found to have the lowest sound power level, both direct and indirect, and also the highest heat transfer rate. This type of flat tube heat exchanger has the potential to reduce the overall noise level of a heat pump while maintaining heat transfer efficiency.

  • Safety aspects of longitudinal administration of IGF-I/IGFBP-3 complex in neonatal mice.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Growth hormone & IGF research : official journal of the Growth Hormone Research Society and the International IGF Research Society. - : Elsevier BV. - 1532-2238. ; 21:4, s. 205-11

    • OBJECTIVE: Very preterm birth is associated with a high risk of morbidity. Infants born very preterm have low serum levels of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), that further decrease after birth. IGF-I is essential for brain development and low serum levels have been associated with retinopathy of prematurity. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of prolonged administration of a low dose of rhIGF-I/rhIGFBP-3 on glucose levels and total body weight, as well as liver, spleen and brain weights, and gray and subcortical white matter in newborn mice. DESIGN: The study was performed as three different trials. In all experiments C57BL/6N mice were injected with a rhIGF-I/rhIGFBP-3 complex or saline. In the first experimental trial, blood glucose levels were assessed 30min, 1h, 1.5h, 3h, 6h, 24h and 48h after the rhIGF-I/rhIGFBP-3 or saline injection on postnatal day (PND) 6. In the second trial, mice were injected daily from PND 3 to 11 and sacrificed on PND 12 for analysis of IGF-I serum levels. In the third trial, body and organ weights and effects on gray and white matter were assessed on PND 18 after PND 3-11 treatments as above. Effects on gray and white matter were measured using immunoreactivity for microtubule-associated protein-2 (MAP-2), myelin basic protein (MBP), 2',3'-cyclic nucleotide 3' phosphodiesterase (CNPase), neurofilament and oligodendrocyte lineage transcription factor 2 (Olig2). RESULTS: Blood glucose levels were unchanged in the rhIGF-I/rhIGFBP-3-treated group compared to baseline. In the control group glucose levels increased 30min after the second saline injection; levels were not elevated at the subsequent time point. Three hours after the rhIGF-I/rhIGFBP-3 or saline, glucose levels were lower in rhIGF-I/rhIGFBP-3-treated animals than in saline treated (p=0.026). At PND 18, total body weight was higher in rhIGF-I/rhIGFBP-3-treated mice compared with controls (p<0.05), but there were no differences between groups in brain, liver or spleen weights. No differences in gray matter area were found between groups. Analyses of white matter markers showed an increased number of Olig2-positive cells in rhIGF-I/rhIGFBP-3-treated mice compared with controls (p<0.001). There were no differences between groups in terms of MBP, CNPase or neurofilament immunoreactivity. CONCLUSIONS: Prolonged administration of rhIGF-I/rhIGFBP-3 did not have a negative impact on blood glucose levels and was beneficial for total body growth.

  • Feasibility of Electrifying Urban Goods Distribution Trucks
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: SAE International Journal of Commercial Vehicles. - : SAE International. - 1946-391X .- 1946-3928. ; 6:1, s. 24-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the feasibility of electrifying medium to heavy urban goods distribution trucks. As a case study, an existing transport system in the Swedish city of Gothenburg is used. The project is a joint research effort between a vehicle OEM, an electric utility, a fleet operator, the Swedish Transport Administration and two research organizations. One main objective is to determine if and when different electrified powertrains are cost efficient to the end user. The results indicate that by 2015 conventional powertrains are still probably the most cost effective alternative in all applications studied. But in 2025, electrified powertrains are most cost efficient for most transport scenarios. These results indicate a transition in preferred powertrain technology for urban trucks within the coming ten years. It is important to point out that this result may not be general. Driving patterns, energy price developments and technology maturity of components such as batteries and motors greatly influence the total cost of ownership and large regional differences in when such a transition may occur are expected. In addition to the total cost of ownership, important issues for a successful deployment are policies (e.g. restricting access to urban areas for noisy and polluting vehicles), information and communication solutions (e.g. adapted route planning), access to a cost effective charging infrastructure (and low-carbon electricity production) and new business models. These must all be developed in parallel to the vehicle and powertrain technology. The large number of different stakeholders involved in this transition is also a challenge in itself.

  • Diversity, Loss, and Gain of Malaria Parasites in a Globally Invasive Bird.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: PLoS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 6:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Invasive species can displace natives, and thus identifying the traits that make aliens successful is crucial for predicting and preventing biodiversity loss. Pathogens may play an important role in the invasive process, facilitating colonization of their hosts in new continents and islands. According to the Novel Weapon Hypothesis, colonizers may out-compete local native species by bringing with them novel pathogens to which native species are not adapted. In contrast, the Enemy Release Hypothesis suggests that flourishing colonizers are successful because they have left their pathogens behind. To assess the role of avian malaria and related haemosporidian parasites in the global spread of a common invasive bird, we examined the prevalence and genetic diversity of haemosporidian parasites (order Haemosporida, genera Plasmodium and Haemoproteus) infecting house sparrows (Passer domesticus). We sampled house sparrows (N = 1820) from 58 locations on 6 continents. All the samples were tested using PCR-based methods; blood films from the PCR-positive birds were examined microscopically to identify parasite species. The results show that haemosporidian parasites in the house sparrows' native range are replaced by species from local host-generalist parasite fauna in the alien environments of North and South America. Furthermore, sparrows in colonized regions displayed a lower diversity and prevalence of parasite infections. Because the house sparrow lost its native parasites when colonizing the American continents, the release from these natural enemies may have facilitated its invasion in the last two centuries. Our findings therefore reject the Novel Weapon Hypothesis and are concordant with the Enemy Release Hypothesis.

  • Lipid asymmetry in plant plasma membranes : phosphate deficiency-induced phospholipid replacement is restricted to the cytosolic leaflet
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The FASEB Journal. - : Wiley. - 0892-6638 .- 1530-6860. ; 24:4, s. 1128-1138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As in other eukaryotes, plant plasma membranes contain sphingolipids, phospholipids, and free sterols. In addition, plant plasma membranes also contain sterol derivatives and usually <5 mol% of a galactolipid, digalactosyldiacylglycerol (DGDG). We earlier reported that compared to fully fertilized oats (Avena sativa), oats cultivated without phosphate replaced up to 70 mol% of the root plasma membrane phospholipids with DGDG. Here, we investigated the implications of a high DGDG content on membrane properties. The phospholipid-to-DGDG replacement almost exclusively occurred in the cytosolic leaflet, where DGDG constituted up to one-third of the lipids. In the apoplastic (exoplasmic) leaflet, as well as in rafts, phospholipids were not replaced by DGDG, but by acylated sterol glycosides. Liposome studies revealed that the chain ordering in free sterol/phospholipid mixtures clearly decreased when > 5mol% DGDG was included. As both the apoplastic plasma membrane leaflet (probably the major water permeability barrier) and rafts both contain only trace amounts of DGDG, we conclude that this lipid class is not compatible with membrane functions requiring a high degree of lipid order. By not replacing phospholipids site specifically with DGDG, negative functional effects of this lipid in the plasma membrane are avoided.
