  • Identification of a MIS 6 age (c. 180 ka) Icelandic tephra within NE Atlantic sediments : a new potential chronostratigraphic marker
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Gas Generation and Migration in Deep Geological Radioactive Waste Repositories. - London : The Geological Society Publishing House. - 9781862397132 ; , s. 65-80
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The incidence of volcanic ash (tephra) within marine sediments serves as a useful stratigraphic marker and tool for correlation. In addition, where an independent age estimate exists, tephra layers can provide a means of dating the sediments themselves. Here we present a geochemically characterized, size sorted tephra layer within Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6, most likely resulting from primary air-fall from an Icelandic volcanic source. This tephra layer is tentatively correlated to the Kerlingarfjoll volcanic system using major element geochemistry. The ash layer has an interpolated age of 181 +/- 6 ka based on the age model for MD04-2822. We briefly review the occurrence of silicic tephra in the North Atlantic region from MIS 7 to MIS 5e inclusive and find potential correlatives to the MD04-2822 MIS 6 ash layer in the Norway Basin and Irminger Sea.

  • Identity and tourism mobility : an exploration of the attitude-behaviour gap
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sustainable Tourism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0966-9582 .- 1747-7646. ; 21:7, s. 999-1016
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the attitude-behaviour gap from an identity perspective in order to better understand why tourists act sustainably at "home" but not when "away". The majority of tourism-related CO2 emissions stems from transport. Behavioural change is a possible way to reduce those emissions. However, research indicates that instigating behavioural change within tourism is problematic, because of the attitude-behaviour gap. Studies suggest that understanding the role of identity and tourism mobility could explain this gap; this paper researches that idea, using a narrative approach to explore the travel life histories of 24 participants, with a second interview to examine how interviewees viewed their tourism activity in the light of environmental debates and concerns. Data were analysed using thematic and narrative-based dialogic/performance approaches. The paper reveals how a need for personal identity can influence travel behaviour and that identity plays a significant role in travel decisions, sometimes overriding cost and environmental issues. The power of social identity is explored, noting increasingly powerful global VFR networks, along with the search for future selves, the need for personal differentiation and issues of multiple identities. Suggestions are made for ways to use identity research into policies seeking to achieve behavioural change.

  • Identity and tourism mobility : An exploration of the attitude — behaviour gap
  • 2014. - 1
  • Ingår i: Understanding and governing sustainable tourism mobility. - London : Routledge. - 9780415839372 - 9781135038311 ; , s. 15-36
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tourists are becoming increasingly mobile. As physical tourism mobility is largely based on the use of fossil fuels, tourism has become a significant contributor to global climate change (UNWTO, UNEP and WMO, 2008). Options to reduce emissions from tourism through technology are promising, but unlikely to achieve absolute emission reductions in line with international efforts (Scott et al., 2010). It has consequently been argued that climatically sustainable tourism mobility demands behavioural change, which appears difficult to achieve (McKercher et al., 2010). Why do we continue to participate in environmentally harmful activities, even though consumers are aware of these interlinkages (Giddens, 2009)?
