  • Plutonium and americium in arctic waters, the North Sea and Scottish and Irish coastal zones
  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Radioactivity. - 0265-931X. ; 4:1, s. 11-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plutonium and americium have been measured in surface waters of the Greenland and Barents Seas and in the northern North Sea from 1980 through 1984. Measurements in water and biota, Fucus, Mytilus and Patella, were carried out in North-English and Scottish waters in 1982 and Fucus samples were collected from the Irish coast in 1983. Fallout is found to dominate as a source of 239+240Pu north of latitude 65°N, while for 238Pu a substantial fraction originates from European nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities. The 238Pu/239+240Pu isotope ratio provides clear evidence of the transport of effluent plutonium from the latter to Spitsbergen waters. Fallout plutonium in Arctic waters has a residence time of the order of several years, while for Pu from Sellafield we estimate mean residence times of 11-15 months in Scottish waters and, tentatively, 1·5-3 y during transport from the North Channel (north of the Irish Sea) to Spitsbergen. 241Am found in Arctic waters probably originates from the decay of fallout 241Pu and, like Pu, tentatively has a residence time of the order of several years. Americium from Sellafield has an estimated mean residence time of 4-6 months in Scottish waters.

  • Infant feeding and dental caries--a longitudinal study of Swedish children.
  • 1985
  • Ingår i: Swedish Dental Journal. - 0347-9994. ; 9:5, s. 201-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to compare dietary habits in children at the age of 12 months with the caries status at the age of 3. In 312 children, residing in 3 different parts of Sweden, a dietary study was carried out at 12 mo. of age, and in 275 (88%) a caries examination was performed at the age of 3. At 12 months of age, higher education of the mother was positively correlated with consumption of bread, vegetables, fruit and meat and negatively with frequency of sucrose-rich foods. At the age of 3, caries was diagnosed in 16% of the children. The prevalence of cavities was related to the level of education of the mother in all 3 areas, cavities being most numerous in children whose mother had received a shorter education. A discriminant analysis showed that the equation discriminating the two a priori defined groups, one with and one without caries at the age of 3, contained a number of sucrose-rich foods. The 3-year-old children with caries had generally consumed cakes, butter, bread and sweet soups more frequently at the age of 12 months than the children in the non-caries group. The analysis thus indicated that - on the group level at least - a dietary pattern, which may be casually linked with future dental caries development, was already established at the age of 12 months. Dietary counselling, when the child is 12-18 mo. of age and based upon information about the dietary habits of the child could thus be of value to prevent caries in the preschool child.

  • Role of neutrophils in hemorrhagic shock-induced gastric mucosal injury in the rat
  • 1987
  • Ingår i: Gastroenterology. - 0016-5085 .- 1528-0012. ; 93:3, s. 466-471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gastric mucosal clearance of 51Cr-labeled red blood cells (51Cr-RBC) was measured in rats during a 30-min control period, a 30-min ischemic period (hemorrhage to 27 mmHg arterial pressure), and a 60-min reperfusion period (reinfusion of shed blood). In untreated (control) rats, a dramatic rise in the leakage of 51Cr-labeled red blood cells into the gastric lumen was observed during the reperfusion period. Treatment with neutrophil antiserum attenuated 51Cr-labeled red blood cell flux into the gastric lumen. Using the radioactive microsphere technique, neutrophil-depleted animals were shown to have higher blood flows in the ischemic period than the untreated rats. Bleeding of untreated rats to a mean arterial pressure of 40 mmHg resulted in blood flows that were not different from those in antiserum-treated rats bled to 27 mmHg and leakage of 51Cr-labeled red blood cells similar to that measured in antiserum-treated rats. The results of this study indicate that neutrophils play an important role in hemorrhagic shock-induced gastric bleeding.
