  • Implementation of Buy-Back Programs

    • This paper documents how Swedish firms implemented and executed open-market sharerepurchases over the period 2000 to 2007 by using a unique hand-collected data set withdetailed information of each repurchase transaction. I find that my sample firms have a higherrepurchase fraction in the first half of the repurchase year. Analysis of liquidity of stocksoffers mixed results as the first proxy, turnover, improves in the second half of the program,whereas the Amihud measure of illiquidity indicates lower liquidity. Positive abnormalreturns following approval of the repurchase program is documented and large repurchaseprograms are associated with higher abnormal returns. My multivariate analysis indicates apositive correlation between abnormal return and repurchase size. Finally, I also find thatmanagers in repurchasing firms exhibit market timing skill, a skill which is more pronouncedfor firms with multiple programs.

  • From Polysaccharides to Functional Materials for Trace Pharmaceutical Adsorption

    • The transition to bioeconomy will reduce our dependency on fossil fuels as well as contribute to a more sustainable society. Within this framework, exploitation and development of renewable substitutes to petroleum-based products provides feasible roadmap for the material design. Here a perspective is provided to how the natural polysaccharides chitosan (CS) and/or cellulose (CL) could be elaborated and transformed to high-performance materials with the explicit aim of removing trace pharmaceutical contaminants from the wastewater, thus facilitating the sustainable development. In the first part of the thesis, chitosan and cellulose were converted to the carbon spheres (C-sphere) through a microwave-assisted hydrothermal carbonization process, and C-sphere was further broken down to the nanographene oxide (nGO) via a simple oxidation route. On this foundation, a green pathway was developed for fabrication of biobased materials for wastewater purification. First, macroporous chitosan-based composite hydrogels with controllable properties were developed, where chitosan-derived nGO worked as a functional property enhancer. Second, a further development changing from the bulky hydrogels to microgels consisting of CS composite particles in the microscopic size was achieved by a fast one-pot spraying-drying process. The crosslinking reaction occurred in situ during the spray-drying. Last, the C-sphere by-itself was also believed to be a potential adsorbent for wastewater contaminants. In the next step the prepared systems were evaluated for their capacity to adsorb pharmaceutical contaminants. Diclofenac sodium (DCF) was utilized as the model drug, and the three fabricated bio-adsorbents all demonstrated effective DCF adsorption performance, with the adsorption efficiency varying from 65.6 to 100%. Moreover, the DCF adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamic study were also investigated to reveal the nature of the adsorption process with the different materials. Finally, chitosan-based microspheres were selected for the reusability study, with the adsorption efficiency above 70% retained after six adsorption-desorption cycles, thus further endowing the promising potential of the fabricated bio-adsorbents for commercial applications.

    • Non-biting midges (Chironomidae) are the most diverse and abundant invertebrate group in boreal lakes and are strongly responsive to climate change, thus they are a valuable palaeoecological proxy for studying aquatic biodiversity response in the face of climate change. Here, we aim to decipher the influence of climate-induced changes on temporal patterns in chironomid assemblages. We apply a novel approach combining traditional taxon-based analysis and species-trait framework to subfossil chironomid assemblages in a sediment core covering the Late Glacial-Holocene transition in Northern Europe. We produce pollen-based July and January temperature reconstructions to characterize past climate fluctuations that show a distinct Early Holocene warming for continuous 1700 years with considerably greater warming in winter (ca. 10 degrees C) than summer (ca. 4 degrees C) temperature. Overall, chironomid taxonomic changes were mainly induced by the temperature tolerances and optima of species, as temporal dynamics showed agreement with temperature reconstructions. Our results suggest that vegetation dynamics could also play a role in structuring chironomid assemblages by selecting taxa with the highest ability to exploit available food resources, thus potentially confounding chironomid-based summer climate reconstructions. We demonstrate that the study of the hidden chironomid functional composition could help to identify secondary drivers and thus strengthen the reliability of climate reconstruction based on subfossil chironomids.   • The pipeline project: Pre-publication independent replications of a single laboratory's research pipeline

    • This crowdsourced project introduces a collaborative approach to improving the reproducibility of scientific research, in which findings are replicated in qualified independent laboratories before (rather than after) they are published. Our goal is to establish a non-adversarial replication process with highly informative final results. To illustrate the Pre-Publication Independent Replication (PPIR) approach, 25 research groups conducted replications of all ten moral judgment effects which the last author and his collaborators had “in the pipeline” as of August 2014. Six findings replicated according to all replication criteria, one finding replicated but with a significantly smaller effect size than the original, one finding replicated consistently in the original culture but not outside of it, and two findings failed to find support. In total, 40% of the original findings failed at least one major replication criterion. Potential ways to implement and incentivize pre-publication independent replication on a large scale are discussed.

    • Northern ecosystems are experiencing rapid and large-scale changes driven by accelerated warming, which have profound effects on the terrestrial and freshwater biodiversity. A comprehensive understanding of the distribution of aquatic biodiversity of subarctic ecosystems is therefore needed to better predict future trajectories of their unique biodiversity. In this study, we examined the functional diversity of chironomid communities in subarctic lakes across a 1000 m-elevation gradient, reflecting gradual changes in temperature and landscape characteristics. Using fuzzy correspondence analyses, we investigated spatial variability in trait composition of chironomid communities from 100 lakes in northern Sweden, and tested the hypotheses that (1) climate directly and indirectly shapes chironomid trait composition across the studied gradient, and (2) that generalist taxa with smaller body size and broader food preferences are more able to persist in cold environments. Our results showed that complex interplays between direct (e.g. temperature) and indirect climate processes (e.g. elevation-driven changes in vegetation/habitats) affect the functional diversity of chironomid communities. Specifically, traits such as larval size, food preference and feeding habits were well separated along the gradient, and this pattern revealed that low elevation lakes with forested catchments tended to have more sediment-feeding taxa and larger larvae than those above the tree line. As expected, food resource availability in lakes is strongly linked to vegetation composition/cover, and traits related to resource exploitation in chironomid communities are therefore well constrained by landscape characteristics. Furthermore, our findings suggested that short life cycles could facilitate the development of viable population in northern and high-elevation lakes where the short ice-free period is a limiting factor, thus contradicting patterns showing smaller organisms in warmer environments reported for other invertebrates. As a consequence of climate warming, the highest elevation lakes in subarctic landscapes will likely lose their typical cold-adapted chironomid taxa along with their functional attributes leading to potential impacts on the food web structure and the overall functioning of northern lake ecosystems.

  • Seasonal local rainfall and hydrological forecasting for Limpopo communities - A pragmatic approach

    • This paper describes the development and testing of a simple local seasonal forecast system of rainfall and hydrological conditions. The primary target group is agricultural extension officers who communicate forecasts to small-scale farmers at local level. Two pilot areas within the Limpopo river basin in South Africa were used, one in the Luvuvhu river basin in Vhembe district and the other in the Letaba river basin in Mopani district. Local rainfall and hydrological forecasts of runoff, soil moisture and evapotranspiration were produced, built on readily available deterministic seasonal meteorological forecasts for large-scale rainfall from CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, South Africa), produced from an ensemble of seasonal forecasts using the CCAM (Conformal-Cubic Atmospheric Model) global forecast model. Hydrological forecasts were produced through a "proxy" approach, whereby outputs from the ACRU (Agricultural Catchment Research Unit) agrohydrological model provided expected hydrological responses from observed years that are representative of the rainfall anomalies predicted by the global seasonal forecast. Locally monitored soil moisture augmented the hydrological forecasts. The local seasonal forecast system does not require sophisticated calculations or a complex operational environment and complements coarser scale forecasts disseminated by the provincial departments of agriculture. Results of three rainfall seasons from 2013 to 2016 in the pilot areas showed the proxy approach to have relatively good matches between forecasts and available observations, showing better predictability for below normal rainfall seasons with exception for an extreme monthly rainfall event. The forecasts matched observed conditions best during the strong El Nin similar to o phase of ENSO (El Nin similar to o Southern Oscillation) for 2015/2016.
