    • Aim:  To investigate the association between perinatal risk factors and neonatal complications and early oculo-motor development in very preterm infants. Methods:  Perinatal risk factors were identified, and the potential association with early oculo-motor development was evaluated by measuring smooth pursuit eye movements (SP) at 2 and 4 months' corrected age (CA) in a population of very preterm infants born in Uppsala County 2004-2007 (n = 113). Results:  Among the 15 tested factors, eight showed significant association in univariate analysis with lower levels of SP at 4 months' CA, namely administration of prenatal corticosteroids, gestational age, birthweight, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, retinopathy of prematurity, periventricular leukomalacia, intraventricular haemorrhage >grade 2, and persistent ductus arteriosus. At 2 months' CA, only retinopathy of prematurity >stage 2 was associated with lower levels of SP. When all factors significant in the univariate tests were included in multiple regressions aimed to assess each factor's independent relation to SP, periventricular leukomalacia was the only significant independent factor. When adding 2-5 of the significant factors using multiple regression analysis, the levels of SP became lower. Conclusion:  Perinatal risk factors were associated with lower levels of SP. This could be interpreted as delayed or disturbed development of normal oculomotor ability.

    • Aim:  To investigate early oculo-motor development in a population-based cohort of very preterm infants.Methods:  Early oculo-motor development was prospectively studied by measuring smooth pursuit eye movements at 2 and 4 months corrected age in a population of very preterm infants born in Uppsala County 2004–2007. Eighty-one preterm infants were studied, and 32 healthy term infants constituted the control group.Results:  The study group consisted of infants with a mean gestational age of28 + 5 weeks. At 2 and 4 months corrected age, infants born very preterm showed lower gain (p < 0.001) and proportion of smooth pursuit eyemovements (p < 0.001) compared to the control group. The boys showed higher gain of smooth pursuit eye movements at both 2 and 4 months corrected age, compared to girls.Conclusions:  Oculo-motor development measured by smooth pursuit eye movements is delayed in very preterm infants at 2 and 4 months corrected age. This might be a risk factor or early indicator of later perceptual and behavioural impairment.

    • Problem and rationale The pre-design phase, before architectural design details are presented is important for the success of the entire construction process. In this phase, it is important to identify the needs of the users and the organization. The present project describes a group-modeling project with system dynamics (SD) in the pre-design phase of a new dementia care environment. The aim was to support a dynamic design process that was oriented towards the users needs. SD uses models to create scenarios and experiment with different solutions to understand complex problems. The method is interactive and suited for group- modeling. The tools used are a construction of a diagram depicting the system and a mathematical model for scenario experiments. Methods and procedureThe group- modeling was performed during five workshops with stakeholders from the organization. The data for the model was collected through discussions with the modeling group, a questionnaire, literature reviews and documents. The process was documented by video-recording and field notes. The participants were interviewed at the end of the project. The data was analyzed by content analysis. ResultsResult show that the modeling process supported the group to explicitly express their goal regarding care. The modeling process moved the group discussions from space solutions and square meters to the goals of the care process. The model developed illustrates a modern perspective of dementia care. Conclusions Group-modeling using SD is interesting for the pre-design process. It can be feasible for linking strategic planning of the organization with the plan over the new healthcare environment since it moves the participants in the pre-design phase to focus on important issues about the care and away from a wish list of various needed spaces, commonly achieved in traditional planning processes.

    • Purpose: To investigate whether optical coherence tomography (OCT) is helpful in the diagnosis of foveal hypoplasia in children. Methods: Children with albinism and aniridia were examined with Stratus OCT 3 software 4.0.1 (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, California, USA). A qualitative examination of the macular area was performed with a 128 A-scans/second-single-scan. Macular thickness was measured quantitatively with an automatic fast macular map protocol. The average thickness/volume of the macula was presented as numerical values and as a false colour code in nine modified early treatment of diabetic retinopathy study (ETDRS) areas (A1-A9). A previously collected control group of children was used for comparison. Results: Macular thickness in 13 children with albinism and three children with aniridia was measured with OCT. Comparison with healthy children in the same population was performed. Patients with albinism and aniridia had significantly thicker central macula (A1) and foveola than children in the control group. Conclusion: OCT was found to be useful in the diagnosis of foveal hypoplasia in children.
