    • The acylation of 2,20-bipyrrole with pentafluorobenzoyl chloride in the presence of AlCl3 afforded six acylated products with rich alpha-, beta-, beta(1)-, alpha,alpha'-, alpha,beta(')-, and alpha,beta(1)'-substitution modes for 1-6, respectively. Then, the alpha,alpha'-diacylated compound 4 was used to synthesize a prodigiosin derivative 9, which provides an alternative method for the syntheses of prodigiosin derivatives. Crystal structures of 1, 4 and 9 show interesting supramolecular dimers formed by multiple hydrogen bonds, O...pi interactions, as well as pi... pi interactions. Interestingly, 9 shows fluorescence turn-on probing behavior towards Zn2+ both in DMF and in DMF-HEPES, with high sensitivity and selectivity. The detection limit for Zn2+ in DMF was calculated to be 1.1 x 10(-8) M.

  • Innovation for and by the People with Disabilities : A Case Study in Improvement of the Manual Wheelchair

    • This paper focuses on information-driven engineering, where information is gathered by means of innovation for people and by the people. This case study was carried out on innovation of a manual wheelchair. Through active participation of person with disability (direct users) and their carers (indirect user), knowledge awareness of the early design was increased. Computer aided engineering tools were used for the development of virtual prototype (VP) and after further feedback from direct and indirect users design was adjusted. Additionally, Physical prototype was built to practically demonstrate the new features to users and finally the prototype was readjusted to bridge user requirement even more. This innovation process identifies additional improvement aspects and contributes beyond fundamental personal needs and increases well being.

  • Influence of dehulling pretreatment on physicochemical properties of Gleditsia sinensis Lam. gum

    • The seeds of Gleditsia sinensis Lam., widespread in China, are an important source of galactomannans. G. sinensis gum was extracted from whole seeds using baking, boiling water and acid dehulling pretreatment, respectively. The physicochemical properties of the three isolated G. sinensis gums were studied to evaluate three pretreatment methods. The results illustrated that the properties of G. sinensis gum were significantly influenced by dulling method (p < 0.05) including the yield, M/G ratio, viscosity, chemical composition and molecular weight. Power-law model (sigma = k.gamma(n)) was applied to the rheological measurements, which indicated that solutions of Gb, Gw and Ga gum behaved as pseudoplastic fluids at the concentration of 0.5% (w/v). The gum obtained by acid pretreatment (Ga) had the lowest yield of 20-24% (w/w). However Ga showed a pronounced shear-thinning behavior and particularly higher viscosity compared with the gums extracted by baking pretreatment (Gb) and boiling water dehulling method (Gw). The mannose to galactose ratios (M/G ratio) for Gb, Gw and Ga were found to be 4.5, 4.4 and 6.9, respectively.   • Structural and thermal characterization of galactomannans from genus Gleditsia seeds as potential food gum substitutes

    • BACKGROUND: Seed galactomannans are preferred hydrocolloids since they are comparatively cheap, non-toxic, eco-friendly and non-polluting during production and application. Galactomannans from seeds of three species of Gleditsia, namely G. sinensis, G. microphylla and G. melanacantha, were characterized in terms of structural and thermal properties. RESULTS: Gleditsia polysaccharides were characterized using both chemical and chromatographic methods, as well as Fourier transform infrared, H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and C-13 NMR spectroscopy, and it was shown that they consist of D-mannopyranose and D-galactopyranose residues. The mannose/galactose (M/G) ratio of galactomannans was 3.25, 3.31 and 2.30, respectively. It was also found that these polysaccharides differ from one another in values of M-w, M-n and polydispersity. X-ray diffraction confirmed the amorphous nature of Gleditsia galactomannans, although G. sinensis galactomannan showed a high crystallinity. Thermal analysis of the galactomannans by differential scanning calorimetry illustrated that their endothermic peaks ranged from 290 to 320 degrees C. CONCLUSION: Gleditsia polysaccharides are neutral galactomannans. The higher value of M/G ratio from G. sinensis and G. microphylla indicates that their gums offer an excellent alternative for locus bean gum. (C) 2011 Society of Chemical Industry

    • A novel bistable symmetric [2](2)rotaxane was prepared by a threading-followed-by-stoppering strategy and characterized with H-1, C-13, and 2D ROESY NMR spectroscopy and HR-ESI spectrometry. The symmetric [2] (2)rotaxane system consists of an anthracene-based bis(crown ether) as macrocycles, and each of the two dibenzo[24]crown-8 (DB24C8) rings is threaded by the pendant substituents a symmetrically substituted central rotatable ferrocene subunit that possesses two distinguishable recognition sites for the DB24C8 ring: namely, a dibenzylammonium site and an N-methyltriazolium site. The uniform shuttling motion of the thread relative to the two DB24C8 rings in [2](2)rotaxane can be driven by external acid base stimuli, which was evidenced by H-1 and 2D ROESY NMR spectroscopy. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations of the [2](2)rotaxane were carried out both in protonated (stretched) and in neutral (contracted) forms. The calculated percentage change in molecular length of the [2](2)rotaxane between the two end-capping bis(methoxyl)phenyl groups is about 48% in the two different states (in acetone), which is much larger than the percentage change (similar to 27%) in human muscle. Moreover, in the two states, the C*-Cp-Cp-C* dihedral angles are computed as -177 degrees in the stretched state and -112 degrees in the contracted state, indicating a correlation between the translational and rotational motions of the [2](2)rotaxane.

  • A Switchable bis-Branched [1]Rotaxane featuring Dual-Mode Molecular Motions and Tunable Molecular Aggregation

    • A multifunctional bis-branched [1]rotaxane containing a perylene bisimide (PBI) core and two identical bistable[1]rotaxane arms terminated with ferrocene units was prepared and characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and 2D ROESY NMR spectroscopies and by HR-ESI spectrometry. The system is shown to possess several key features: (1) In acetone solution, external acid base stimuli can result in relative mechanical movements of its ring and thread, which can induce extension and contraction movements of the whole system accompanied by a rotational movement of the ferrocene units, thus realizing dual-mode molecular motions, and the optimized conformations at different states are obtained through molecular dynamics simulations employing the general Amber force field. (2) The introduction of PBI enables the system fluorescence encoding through distance-dependent photoinduced electron transfer process from the ferrocene units to the PBI fluorophore. (3) The addition of Zn2+ can increase the degree of aggregation of the system, while adding base hinders aggregation because of the movement of the macrocyde. The tunable aggregated nanostructural morphologies of [1]rotaxane were examined by scanning electron microscopy. These results can pave the way to achieve precise control of integrated and coupling nanomechanical motions at a single-molecule level and provide more insight into controlling the aggregate behavior of switchable mechanically interlocked molecules.

    • Two novel star-shaped [1](n)rotaxanes with three and four identical [1]rotaxane arms but different multibranched cores were designed, synthesized, and well-characterized. In the two systems, external base acid stimuli result in the uniform relative mechanical movement of the macrocydic rings and threads of their [1]rotaxane arms. The energy-minimized structures of the two rotaxanes in different states were obtained using molecular dynamics simulations in acetone solution, suggesting the construction of more sophisticated molecular machines mimicking the extension and contraction motions.

    • In this paper, we study an aspiration-induced migration model, in which each individual plays the prisoner’s dilemma game with those being within a circle of radius r centered on himself/herself. An individual will migrate to a randomly chosen place with the velocity v if his/her payoff is below the aspiration level. We report that cooperative behavior is favored when the aspiration level and interaction radius are moderate, and the migration velocity is slow.

    • There are few studies on associations between respiratory health and allergens, fungal and bacterial compounds in schools in tropical countries. The aim was to study associations between respiratory symptoms in pupils and ethnicity, chemical microbial markers, allergens and fungal DNA in settled dust in schools in Malaysia. Totally 462 pupils (96%) from 8 randomly selected secondary schools in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, participated. Dust was vacuumed from 32 classrooms and analysed for levels of different types of endotoxin as 3-hydroxy fatty acids (3-OH), muramic acid, ergosterol, allergens and five fungal DNA sequences. Multiple logistic regression was applied. Totally 13.1% pupils reported doctor's diagnosed asthma, 10.3% wheeze and 21.1% pollen or pet allergy. Indian and Chinese children had less atopy and asthma than Malay. Carbon dioxide levels were low (380-690 ppm). No cat (Fel d1), dog (Can f 1) or horse allergens (Ecu cx) were detected. The levels of Bloomia tropicalis (Blo t), house dust mite allergens (Der p 1, Der f 1, Der m 1) and cockroach allergens (Per a 1 and Bla g 1) were low. There were positive associations between levels of Aspergillus versicolor DNA and daytime breathlessness, between C14 3-OH and respiratory infections and between ergosterol and doctors diagnosed asthma. There were negative (protective) associations between levels of C10 3-OH and wheeze, between C16 3-OH and day time and night time breathlessness, between cockroach allergens and doctors diagnosed asthma. Moreover there were negative associations between amount of fine dust, total endotoxin (LPS) and respiratory infections. In conclusion, endotoxin at school seems to be mainly protective for respiratory illness but different types of endotoxin could have different effects. Fungal contamination measured as ergosterol and Aspergillus versicolor DNA can be risk factors for respiratory illness. The ethnical differences for atopy and asthma deserve further attention.
