  • EPOXI: Comet 103P/Hartley 2 Observations from a Worldwide Campaign
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - London : IOP. - 2041-8213 .- 2041-8205. ; 734:L1, s. 1-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Earth- and space-based observations provide synergistic information for space mission encounters by providing data over longer timescales, at different wavelengths and using techniques that are impossible with an in situ flyby. We report here such observations in support of the EPOXI spacecraft flyby of comet 103P/Hartley 2. The nucleus is small and dark, and exhibited a very rapidly changing rotation period. Prior to the onset of activity, the period was ~16.4?hr. Starting in 2010 August the period changed from 16.6?hr to near 19?hr in December. With respect to dust composition, most volatiles and carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios, the comet is similar to other Jupiter-family comets. What is unusual is the dominance of CO 2 -driven activity near perihelion, which likely persists out to aphelion. Near perihelion the comet nucleus was surrounded by a large halo of water-ice grains that contributed significantly to the total water production.

  • Growth and characterization of superconducting beta-FeSe type iron chalcogenide nanowires
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Superconductor Science & Technology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-2048 .- 1361-6668. ; 27:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have grown highly crystalline beta-FeSe type iron chalcogenide nanowires (NWs) by annealing thin film that is prepared by a pulsed laser deposition method. Three kinds of NWs with compositions of Fe0.8Se, Fe0.88Se0.32Te0.68 and Fe0.88Te0.91S0.09 have been prepared and carefully characterized by a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). The NWs reveal ideal tetragonal structure with crystal growth along the [100] direction. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) studies and HRTEM images show the NWs to have good compositional uniformity, except for the existence of a thin layer of oxide on the surface. No superconducting transition was observed in the FeSex NWs, which is possibly caused by Fe deficiency. The other two types of NWs show relatively higher and sharper superconducting transitions than their bulk counterparts. Interestingly, a resistive transition tail is observed in the NWs with diameter smaller than 100 nm, which might originate from a phase slip process in the quasi-one-dimensional system. The success in producing these high quality NWs provides a new avenue for better understanding the origin of superconductivity in beta-FeSe type iron chalcogenides.

  • High-k dielectrics on (100) and (110) n-InAs: Physical and electrical characterizations
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: AIP Advances. - : AIP Publishing. - 2158-3226. ; 4:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two high-k dielectric materials (Al2O3 and HfO2) were deposited on n-type (100) and (110) InAs surface orientations to investigate physical properties of the oxide/semiconductor interfaces and the interface trap density (D-it). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses (XPS) for native oxides of (100) and (110) as-grown n-InAs epi wafers show an increase in As-oxide on the (100) surface and an increase in InOx on the (110) surface. In addition, XPS analyses of high-k (Al2O3 and HfO2) on n-InAs epi show that the intrinsic native oxide difference between (100) and (110) epi surfaces were eliminated by applying conventional in-situ pre-treatment (TriMethyAluminium (TMA)) before the high-k deposition. The capacitance-voltage (C-V) characterization of HfO2 and Al2O3 MOSCAPs on both types of n-InAs surfaces shows very similar C-V curves. The interface trap density (D-it) profiles show D-it minima of 6.1 x 10(12/)6.5 x 10(12) and 6.6 x 10(12)/7.3 x 10(12) cm(-2) eV(-1) for Al2O3 and HfO2, respectively for (100) and (110) InAs surfaces. The similar interface trap density (D-it) on (100) and (110) surface orientation were observed, which is beneficial to future InAs FinFET device with both (100) and (110) surface channel orientations present. • Intra- and Inter-syllabic Coordination : An Articulatory Study of Taiwanese and English
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The 17th International Congress of Phonetic Sciences (ICPhS XVII). - Hong Kong : Wai-Sum Lee & Eric Zee. ; , s. 273-276
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study the intra- and inter-gestural timing and coordination in English closed syllables and Taiwanese checked syllables is examined. Kinematic data elicited from a repetition task reveals that the vowel is co-articulated with the onset and coda consonants to a greater extent in Taiwanese checked syllables than English closed syllables; for Taiwanese greater overlap is observed between the hetero-syllabic coda and onset consonants. The different gestural overlap patterns in Taiwanese and English are accounted for with reference to the language-specific gestural pattern.

  • Speech Errors in Taiwanese : An EMMA Study
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 17th International Congress of Phonetic Sciences. - Hong Kong : Wai-Sum Lee & Eric Zee. ; , s. 894-897
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Speech errors in Taiwanese are investigated by means of a speeded repetition task. Our results show that the intrusion bias is also attested for word pairs with mismatched onsets, whereas in the alternating coda condition, reduction errors are the most frequent error type. This cross-linguistic difference can be attributed to language-specific implementation of stop codas.

  • Composition of polysaccharides in primary walls of Litchi Chinensis Sonn.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of food biochemistry. - : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Inc.. - 0145-8884 .- 1745-4514. ; 34:5, s. 971-982
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structure of polysaccharides from the primary cell walls of Litchi chinensis pericarp tissues is determined using various approaches, including chromatographic, spectroscopic, chemical and enzymatic methods. These primary cell walls contain mainly pectins and fucosylated xyloglucans. Further, much smaller proportions of pure xylans were also characterized, which gives evidence for the presence of nonbranched pure xylans in eudicotyledons. As far as we are aware, this is the first report detailing the structure of polysaccharides in the primary cell walls of L. chinensis pericarp tissues.

  • Total synthesis of homogeneous variants of hirudin P6 : a post-translationally modified anti-thrombotic leech-derived protein
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Angewandte Chemie International Edition. - : Wiley-VCH Verlagsgesellschaft. - 1433-7851 .- 1521-3773. ; 53:15, s. 3947-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hirudin P6 is a leech-derived anti-thrombotic protein which possesses two post-translational modifications, O-glycosylation and tyrosine sulfation. In this study we report the ligation-based synthesis of a library of hirudin P6 proteins possessing homogeneous glycosylation and sulfation modifications. The nature of the modifications incorporated was shown to have a drastic effect on inhibition against both the fibrinogenolytic and amidolytic activities of thrombin and thus highlights a potential means for attenuating the biological activity of the protein.

  • Noise-induced hearing loss in the 21 century : A research and translational update
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: World Journal of Otorhinolaryngology. - : BPG Publisher. - 2218-6247. ; 3:3, s. 58-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Millions of people worldwide are exposed to harmful levels of noise daily in their work and leisure environment. This makes noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) a major occupational health risk globally. NIHL is the second most common form of acquired hearing loss after age-related hearing loss and is itself a major contributing factor to presbycusis. Temporary threshold shifts, once thought to be relatively harmless and recoverable, are now known to cause permanent cochlear injury leading to permanent loss of hearing sensitivity. This article reviews the current understanding of the cellular and molecular pathophysiology of NIHL with latest findings from animal models. Therapeutic approaches to protect against or to mitigate NIHL are discussed based on their proposed action against these known mechanisms of cochlear injury. Successes in identifying genes that predispose individuals to NIHL by candidate gene association studies are discussed with matched gene knockout animal models. This links to exciting developments in experimental gene therapy to replace and regenerate lost hair cells and post-noise otoprotective therapies currently being investigated in clinical trials. The aim is to provide new insights into current and projected future strategies to manage NIHL; bench to bedside treatment is foreseeable in the next 5 to 10 years.
