  • Orchestrating interdependence in an international online learning community
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Educational Technology. - Oxford : Blackwell Publishing. - 0007-1013 .- 1467-8535. ; 37:5, s. 733-748
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on research into the student experience as participants in the development of an international online community. The background context for this is an international master's programme and the specific context for the research is a module on Digital Media Applications (DMA), which are outlined. The programme design emphasises peer and formative assessment practices and the pedagogical approach aims to foster group collaboration in international teams. Following an overview of the research methods adopted, a number of emergent themes from the data analysis of student diaries are discussed, including issues of language, culture and identity. In conclusion, we offer some reflections on these issues and discuss the underpinning assumptions (in relation to assessment practices in particular) that have given direction to our subsequent ongoing research and development.

  • Supporting learners in an international online learning community : on the role of personal and professional development planning
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: eLearning in Higher Education. - Linz : Trauner Verlag. - 3854878346 ; , s. 11-30
  • Bokkapitel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • The background context for this paper is the development of the international MSc e-Learning Multimedia and Consultancy. The MSc is a collaborative programme between Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen (HAN University) in the Netherlands and Sheffield Hallam University in the UK. The programme as a whole is framed within a virtual learning environment and involves a “blended approach” through international studies, local studies and independent study. A major focus of our attention in the early stages of development of this project has been on the promotion of formative peer assessment as a means of supporting learners in online learning communities. Subsequently as a result of student and tutor feedback, a framework for facilitating the process of formative self assessment has become the priority of our current development. This is based on the introduction of a personal and professional development planning process across the programme, in order to support this through a process of systematic reflection, evaluation and action planning. This has also become the focus of attention in terms of our ongoing action research and provides the focal point for this paper.

  • Podcasting in School
  • 2008
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Podcasting is a new phenomenon in Swedish schools. This pa- per describes a project where the main goal is to analyze if the students’ interest in mathematics is affected if the mathematics is made accessible via podcasts and iPods. Teachers at eleven schools were encouraged to produce podcasts as a part of their mathematics teaching in school year eight. The results indicate an increased interest in mathematics and the learning of mathematics among the students. We also found that the tech- nical difficulties for the teachers were underestimated in the project, and that teachers had difficulties in finding time for the production of podcasts.

  • Heparan sulfate and syndecan-1 are essential in maintaining murine and human intestinal epithelial barrier function
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Investigation. - 0021-9738 .- 1558-8238. ; 118:1, s. 229-238
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Patients with protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) fail to maintain intestinal epithelial barrier function and develop an excessive and potentially fatal efflux of plasma proteins. PLE occurs in ostensibly unrelated diseases, but emerging commonalities in clinical observations recently led us to identify key players in PLE pathogenesis. These include elevated IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, venous hypertension, and the specific loss of heparan sulfate proteoglycans from the basolateral surface of intestinal epithelial cells during PLE episodes. Here we show that heparan sulfate and syndecan-1, the predominant intestinal epithelial heparan sulfate proteoglycan, are essential in maintaining intestinal epithelial barrier function. Heparan sulfate- or syndecan-1-deficient mice and mice with intestinal-specific loss of heparan sulfate had increased basal protein leakage and were far more susceptible to protein loss induced by combinations of IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, and increased venous pressure. Similarly, knockdown of syndecan-1 in human epithelial cells resulted in increased basal and cytokine-induced protein leakage. Clinical application of heparin has been known to alleviate PLE in some patients but its unknown mechanism and severe side effects due to its anticoagulant activity limit its usefulness. We demonstrate here that non-anticoagulant 2,3-de-O-sulfated heparin could prevent intestinal protein leakage in syndecan-deficient mice, suggesting that this may be a safe and effective therapy for PLE patients.

  • Integrin alpha 3 beta 1, a Novel Receptor for alpha 3(IV) noncollagenous domain and a trans-dominant inhibitor for integrin alpha v beta 3
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biological Chemistry. - 1083-351X. ; 281:30, s. 20932-20939
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exogenous soluble human alpha 3 noncollagenous (NC1) domain of collagen IV inhibits angiogenesis and tumor growth. These biological functions are attributed to the binding of alpha 3NC1 to integrin alpha v beta 3. However, in some tumor cells that express integrin alpha v beta 3, the alpha 3NC1 domain does not inhibit proliferation, suggesting that integrin alpha v beta 3 expression is not sufficient to mediate the anti-tumorigenic activity of this domain. Therefore, in the present study, we searched for novel binding receptors for the soluble alpha 3NC1 domain in cells lacking alpha v beta 3 integrin. In these cells, soluble alpha 3NC1 bound integrin alpha 3 beta 1; however, unlike alpha v beta 3, alpha 3 beta 1 integrin did not mediate cell adhesion to immobilized alpha 3NC1 domain. Interestingly, in cells lacking integrin alpha 3 beta 1, adhesion to the alpha 3NC1 domain was enhanced due to activation of integrin alpha v beta 3. These findings indicate that integrin alpha 3 beta 1 is a receptor for the alpha 3NC1 domain and transdominantly inhibits integrin alpha v beta 3 activation. Thus integrin alpha 3 beta 1, in conjunction with integrin alpha v beta 3, modulates cellular responses to the alpha 3NC1 domain, which may be pivotal in the mechanism underpinning its anti-angiogenic and anti-tumorigenic activities.
