  • Newsroom Divides : Online News Production, Gender, and Organization at DN.se
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Communication Papers: Media Literacy and Gender Studies. - : Edicions A Peticio. - 2014-6752. ; 4:7, s. 22-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The crisis of the news media industry has changed the conditions of news reporting, placed pressure on the journalism profession, and affected its professional identity. In the last few years, online newsrooms have undergone significant changes in their organization and their practices of production. This article presents a case study of the relationships between gender, news production, professional routines, working conditions, and attitudes toward gender equality in the online newsroom of DN.se, the news website of Dagens Nyheter, Sweden’s largest morning newspaper.Like many newspapers worldwide, Dagens Nyheter faces difficulties in maintaining its readership, and has recently implemented major reorganizations, including staff cuts and budget reductions in the online newsroom. These changes also have had an impact on the daily work practices of reporters, including increased workloads and conflicting professional ideals. The journalists at DN.se generally express a broad awareness of gender parity. However, women’s voices, experiences, and expertise continue to be significantly underrepresented in the news content. The DN.se online news replicates the patterns of gender portrayal and representation observed in traditional print news media in Sweden and internationally. It is argued that intensified market pressure and increased competition for readers, combined with the lack of goal-oriented policies, are all promoting a type of journalism which is potentially threatening to gender parity in online newsrooms.

  • Perfect profession : Swedish journalism students, their teachers, and educational goals
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Becoming a journalist. - Göteborg : Nordicom. - 9789187957345 - 9789187957352 ; , s. 93-109
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study discusses how students taking their first year at three Swedish schools of jour-nalism view their future professional roles. Furthermore, the ideals of the students are compared with the professional attitudes expressed by their teachers and the objectives described in the course syllabi of the three journalism programmes. Data were collected using a student survey, interviews with teachers and the syllabi of the basic courses given by the three schools of journalism. The professional role most students identified with was the Storyteller. However, the reality that many journalists face involves reduced creative opportunities in the newsroom. Instead, the swiftness of producing news within given timeframes is demanded. This may suggest that the ideal professional role of aspiring journalists is in conflict with the demands they are likely to meet when entering the job market. The study also indicates divides and conflicting positions between the students’ and the educators’ journalistic ideals, between teaching practices and the content of the syllabi, and between educational ideals and learning outcomes. The results suggest that both students and their teachers want to maintain high-quality professional standards and traditional core values of journalism.

  • Race place shape : A case study of contested racialized boundaries of belonging, embodiment, and gender in Swedish alternative media
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: African and Black Diaspora. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1752-8631 .- 1752-864X. ; 12:1, s. 20-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When the alternative and separatist media site Rummet (The Room) was launched in 2014, it had immediate echo in Swedish mainstream media. The platform’s founders declared that it was for and by ‘racialized feminists and anti-racists’, and that only non-whites were welcome to participate. Criticism from the elite media focused on the separatist stance and accused the founders of being racists themselves. My discussion in this case study concerns the racialized intersections of body, space, and identity. The data consist of texts posted on Rummet’s website during January 2014, and articles in the Swedish mainstream media published during the first three months of 2014. The founders of Rummet made use of the media space to reverse the white gaze, reframe themselves and their bodies, and re-imagine place-making mediascapes and identities. The polemical debate framed the site’s separatism as a threat to social cohesion and evaded the question of white privilege.

  • Ryska grymheter och svensk judefara : Pogromer i Ryssland och östjudisk invandring i svensk dagspress 1881–1921
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Presshistorisk årsbok 2016. - Stockholm : Svensk presshistorisk förening. ; , s. 107-121

  • Storylab Lessons : A Collaborative Project Between Courses in Journalism and Media Technology
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nordicom Review. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 1403-1108 .- 2001-5119. ; 39:1, s. 3-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines Storylab, a collaborative learning project between the journalism programme at Stockholm University and the engineering programme in media technology at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, designed to combine journalistic storytelling with pervasive media technology. The aim of the study is to identify and reflect on the challenges associated with the approach. The methods used are a survey and semi-structured interviews with the students. The analyses draw on research concerning the current main challenges for the news industry and journalism educators. The results show that Storylab was highly appreciated, and provided students with useful skills for their professional lives. However, not all groups worked well together, and some students wished that the collaboration had been more extensive. Differences in motivations and priorities were mentioned as restraining factors. Therefore, it is argued that for a sustainable media landscape, journalists and engineers must collaborate, and that this cooperation can be brought about during professional training.

  • Victims and Intruders : Swedish press coverage on Anti-Jewish violence in Russia and on Jewish immigration 1881–1921
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Media History. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1368-8804 .- 1469-9729. ; 24:3-4, s. 477-492
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article sets out to investigate how the Swedish regional press framed anti-Jewish violence in Russia and Jewish immigration to Sweden between 1881 and 1921. Furthermore, it analyses how the Swedish newspapers framed differences between the Jewish minority and the Swedish majority, and between the newly arrived Jews and the already established Jewish community in Sweden. The study, which combines quantitative and qualitative methods, is based on articles gathered from the National Library of Sweden’s digital database Digitized Swedish Newspapers. An analysis of some 400 articles suggests that sympathy towards the Jews in Russia dominates the reports on violence in the tsarist empire. In these texts, the Jews are mainly framed as innocent victims of brutal violence. In the articles concerning the eastern European Jewish immigration to Sweden, however, hostile attitudes are the most prominent. The Jewish immigrants are framed as menacing intruders, threatening law and order and the general welfare of Sweden.

  • Storylab – a collaborative project of digital storytelling between educations in journalism and media technology
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we examine Storylab, an interdisciplinary learning project between the journalism programme at Stockholm University and engineering programme in Media technology at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, designed to combine journalistic storytelling with pervasive media technologies. The aim of the study is to identify drivers and barriers in a cross-curriculum partnership involving journalism and engineering students. The students teamed up in interdisciplinary groups in order to explore the future of digital storytelling, to find innovative design solutions, and to demonstrate practical applications combining journalism with media technology. The methods used are a survey and semi-structured interviews with the students. The analyses draw on research concerning the current main challenges for the media industry, journalists, and educators (Ramaker, Stoep & Deuze 2015; Picha Edwardsson 2015; Salaverria 2011). The theoretical foundation also includes interdisciplinary studies, and collaborative learning (Klein & Newell 1997; Wiersema 2002).The results show that the engineering students had significantly more positive attitudes towards the future of the media industry than their journalism peers. The students also believed that user friendly digital designs and cooperation with other professionals are the most important factors for a successful media business. We argue that it is crucial for a sustainable media landscape that journalists and engineers collaborate. We further contend that it is of vital importance that this cooperation is brought about already during the professional training. Consequently, educators need to address these challenges now, as they constrain the development of journalism in the future media landscape.
