  • What Drives Performance in Globally Focused Marketing Organizations? A Three-Country Study

    • In marketing, compared with other organizational dimensions such as leadership, culture, structure, and processes, relatively scant attention has been devoted to the effect of strategy on firm performance, especially in the global context. Rapid globalization of markets, along with ever-increasing dynamic demands on the marketing organization, necessitates a new examination. This article reports on a study that examines the role of strategy and other organizational forces on the performance of globally focused marketing organizations headquartered in Norway, Sweden, and the United States. The general findings indicate that (1) the constructs of leadership, strategy, and culture precede the globally focused marketing organization's structure; (2) strategy precedes structure; and (3) organizational structure and processes influence marketing and financial performance. Many relationships appear to be consistent across countries, and some are uniquely tied to the home-country markets.

    • Thermosetting resins based on semi-crystalline poly(dimethyl trimethylene carbonate) (PDTC) were synthesised and characterised. Polymers with linear and branched architectures were synthesised through cationic ring opening polymerisation (CROP) of dimethyl trimethylene carbonate (DTC) using a series of polyols as initiators and fumaric acid as catalyst. The best powders were stable during storage at 45 degrees C for one week and could subsequently form films at temperatures between 100 and 115 degrees C. Functionalisation of the resins with methacrylic anhydride enabled curing by UV-initiated radical polymerisation. Rheology measurements showed that the architecture had a significant effect on the melt viscosity, which shows that the rheological properties can be tuned for use as low temperature curing powder coatings.

    • Organic-inorganic hybrid materials consisting of nanosized silica particles with surface grafted PS or PS-b-PMMA were synthesized using ATRP. These hybrid materials were used in the fabrication of highly-ordered isoporous membranes. Optical characterization revealed that the membranes consisted of hexagonally ordered pores of uniform size. The combination of an open pore structure and high surface area makes isoporous membranes into materials of high interest in fields as biotechnology and photonics.

    • Rational design of enzymes with improved properties, such as enantioselectivity, usually focuses mutations within the substrate binding site. On the other hand, directed evolution of enzymes usually targets the entire protein and discovers beneficial mutations far from the substrate binding site. In this paper, we propose an explanation for this discrepancy and show that a combined approach-random mutagenesis within the substrate binding site-is better. To increase the enantioselectivity (E) of a Pseudomonas fluorescens esterase (PFE) toward methyl 3-bromo-2-methylpropionate, we focused mutagenesis into the substrate binding site at Trp28, Val121, Phe198, and Val225. Five of the catalytically active mutants (13%) showed better enantioselectivity than wild-type PFE. The increases in enantioselectivity were higher (up to 5-fold, reaching E = 61) than with mutants identified by random mutagenesis of the entire enzyme.

    • Semicrystalline macromonomers based on poly(pentadecalactone), PPDL, have been synthesized by the lipase-catalyzed ring-opening of the otherwise chemically inert pentadecalactone monomer. The macromonomers were designed to have reactive thiols as end groups by the appropriate choice of initiator and chain terminator. The thiol functional macromonomers were then used together with ene monomers to give crosslinked thin films after irradiation in the molten state by UV light in the presence of a photoinitiator (Irgacure 65 1). Two different ene monomers were used, i.e., a tetrafunctional norbornene species and a trifunctional allyl ether maleate species, and resulted in semicrystalline cured films when cured with PPDL. An amorphous, commercially available, trifunctional thiol, trimethylolpropane tri(3-mercaptopropionate), TRIS, was also used for network formation in order to better understand the effect of crystallinity. All thiol-ene systems were found to be readily photopolymerised to high conversion. The PPDL-based networks were semicrystalline in the crosslinked state where the degree of crystallinity was found to depend on the nature of the cross-linker. Networks based on TRIS were found to be amorphous.
