Thirty-five years of research on energy and power: A landscape analysis

- The urgent need to mitigate climate change and decarbonise the energy sector brings the risk that wider social and environmental concerns about the sustainability of energy systems are neglected. Countries may achieve decarbonization goals while reproducing or worsening the unequal distribution of access, opportunities, costs and burdens that is inherent to current energy systems. This study is motivated by the tension between visions for change towards sustainable energy systems and historic and contemporary inequities on the ground. The study contributes a quantitative, global-scope overview of existing research that places energy users and their lives at the centre of analysis for inclusive and equitable transitions. It further identifies the themes, concepts and perspectives that dominate scholarly debate and analyses the presence and relative influence of work that explicitly considers relations of power. The stepwise review uses the Scopus database and multiple bibliometric tools, covering the period until June 2022. It adopts a novel approach to identify dominant and marginal topics, geographical contexts and theoretical lenses employed including the uptake of critical social science approaches. The results indicate that dominant studies fail to engage critically with relationships of power. Even within the debate on “energy poverty”, work based in critical theory approaches account for less than seven percentages of the total body of work. For work on “energy justice” and users, four percentages of publications account for gender. The dominant language is technical and depoliticized. The study identifies research gaps and promising avenues for further research.

- This contribution aims to propose a possible integration of science communication debates, on deficit, dialogue and participation between different actors, experts and non-experts, in the study of social LCA. The purpose of such an integration stems from the understanding that through the product chain, there are a wide variety of actors that enable the material product to "flow" and that are working with scientific and sustainability-relevant information. This abstract first discusses the key arguments that evolved in science communication debates especially in the last decades leading up to the more recent deliberations on participation, and then proposes reasons why it could be worthwhile to combine these arguments in the growing literature on social LCA. It uses Oatly, the Swedish oat milk company, and the types of communication in its product chain, as the case study to argue the relevance of science communication scholarly frameworks in social LCA.

A Question of Utter Importance: The Early History of Climate Change and Energy Policy in Sweden, 1974–1983

- This paper studies early arguments in Sweden for combating climate change. We show how scientific results in relation to climate change entered the political sphere as part of the debate on energy in the 1970s, a process we propose to name energysation. We argue that the use of climate science by pro-nuclear political actors served as a way of maintaining a course set by a high-energy society while simultaneously trying to outmanoeuvre the growing environmental anti-nuclear and low-energy movement. When the pro-nuclear power side met with resistance, this led to a displacement of climate change knowledge away from the realm of the national political sphere and specific energy forms, a process we conceptualise as de-energysation. By highlighting conflicts and the political framings of climate change in the early years 1974–1983, we suggest that the history of these frames influences current delay in climate change mitigation and limits the range of actions and ways of addressing the ongoing climate emergency.

Framtidens gröna praktiker : förutsättningar för omställningsagenter i mat- och transportsektorn

- Rapporten tar sin utgångspunkt i att det akuta klimatläget kräver nya mer cirkulära sätt att producera och konsumera varor och tjänster på. I rapporten ger vi exempel på lovande gröna initiativ och pekar på vilka svårigheter omställningsagenterna bakom dem möter. Fem ideella och vinstdrivande initiativ från matsektorn och transportsektorn studeras. I matsektorn finns det stor miljöpotential i att minska svinnet. Proteinskifte, från animaliskt kött och mejeri, till vegetabiliska motsvarigheter leder till en mer effektiv resurshantering. Det gäller särskilt när produktionen är lokal och långväga transporter kan undvikas. Hur mycket vatten och landareal som produktionen kräver påverkar miljöpotentialen. Produktion av havre- och ärtprodukter, som studerats i rapporten, kan leva upp till sådana krav, med villkoret att de ingår i cirkulära flöden där det inte produceras överskott. När det gäller transportsektorn har initiativ som stärker cykling en stor miljöpotential. Att dela på eller återbruka cyklar leder till mer effektiv resurshantering. Potentialen villkoras dock om användarna av cykelpooler eller cykelkök parallellt köper egna cyklar och kör bil. Med hjälp av teorier från miljö- och omställningsforskning belyser vi att omställningsagenter verkar inom regimer som bygger på linjära praktiker och fossila beroenden. Motståndet som omställnings[1]agenter möter kan vara mycket konkret, som att det är svårt att hitta betalningsvilliga användare men även handla om subtila processer som att behöva tilltala målgrupper som konsumenter snarare än medborgare. Omställningsagenterna tvingas på olika sätt anpassa sig till regimens spelregler, oavsett om det strider mot egna värderingar och visioner. De studerade initiativen illustrerar möjliga sätt att organisera framtiden på. Det gäller särskilt de ideella verksamheterna. I likhet med tidigare studier visar rapporten att förutsättningen för att omställningsagenter ska kunna visa vägen mot en grönare framtid är begränsad om inte lagstiftning, subventioner, och nya normer om ett gott liv stöttar dem.

- Birgitta Hambraeus (C) och Birgitta Dahl (S) var centrala aktörer under två avgörande decennier för svensk miljö- och energipolitik. Under perioden 1971-1991 sökte de, från olika politiska utgångspunkt, skapa en framsynt politik baserad på hänsyn till miljö och klimat. De var ibland motståndare, ibland allierade i denna kamp. De ställde svåra frågor. De vågade ompröva en felaktig politik. De krävde omställning till ett mer hållbart samhälle.

- The present article is concerned with the nexus of masculinities and environment. The authors present their critical analyses of two configurations of masculinities the authors refer to as ‘industrial/breadwinner’ and ‘ecomodern’ masculinities that dominate politics worldwide. The authors stated their opinion on the fact that the first two configurations of masculinities are acutely but distinctly in conflict with the wellbeing of the planet. The paper presents an empirical and theoretical analysis of ‘ecological masculinities’, which considers the insights and limitations of masculinities studies, deep ecology, ecological feminism and feminist care theory. In this article, the authors focus their attention on the necessity of ecologisation of masculinities as well as on the need for men and masculinities to ‘ecologise’ relationally and create more caring encounters with self and others. In support of the need in a transition from hegemonisation to ecologisation, necessary configurations beyond the constraints of industrial/breadwinner and ecomodern masculinities are presented. The authors also argue that the potential to expose and resolve the anthropocentric discord between Earth, others and human beings is possible within the very constructs of manhood. The notion of ecological masculinities suggested in the article is a constructive response to the roles of men and masculine identities in the Anthropocene. The exit politics central to the notion of ecological masculinities represent a theoretical framework and plurality of practices reflective of a masculine ecologisation process. - Back in 2007, Arnold Schwarzenegger received the European Campaigner of the Year award. At the pinnacle of his popularity as a politician, he problematically enacted and politically relied on what I referred to (Hultman, 2013) as “ecomodern masculinities” or green washing the pervasive systematic abuse against our planet. This chapter considers the ways that Schwarzenegger embodied and is now, in some sense, shifting away from an ecomodernist standing. Noting traces of alteration in the midst of rising social unrest, an escalating global climate emergency, and the gains of a youth climate justice movement lead by, among others, Greta Thunberg, I argue that Schwarzenegger might once again be back to give us important clues to how environmental politics is embodied in many (Global Northern) men’s lives. By looking at the recent and historic changes in the configuration of his identity, I argue that Schwarzenegger is tracking and re-embodying himself along with the changing discourses on gender and environmental justice that gravitate towards the values and practises elsewhere described as “ecological masculinities” (Hultman, 2017; Hultman & Pulé, 2018).
