  • A User Driven Design Approach to Creating UGC Services – Challenging the Newspaper Industry
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Human Interface and the Management of Information Information and Interaction Design. - Berlin : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783642392085 - 9783642392092 ; , s. 187-196
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a user driven approach to creating user generated content services together with newspaper representatives and researchers in a Living Lab setting. Two cases are discussed, one with creating city district blogs and one with creating a site for un-employed youth. In each case both situated and distributed design activities were conducted, and the paper discusses the challenges with this approach. As the newspaper industry traditionally designs their services in-house from their own ideas and thereafter tests them with their readers, a user driven approach by readers was very challenging. However, the newspaper representatives also found it rewarding to embrace their ideas. The participating readers were very active in the situated activities but only a few continued the same activity online. The paper concludes by proposing a model for how to view the changing role of a researcher or facilitator in these types of setting. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

  • Co-creating Innovative UGC Services with the Media Industry
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Piscataway : IEEE Press. - 9781467359337 - 9781509056460 - 9780769548920 - 9781467359337 ; , s. 3057-3066
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we identify challenges of involving different stakeholders in distributed co-creative open innovation processes and discuss how these challenges can be handled. In the LoCoMedia project, researchers, newspaper representatives and readers/users have co-created innovative user generated content (UGC) services. With a Living Lab approach with the user in focus in a real life setting, we have experimented with different ways of involving different stakeholders in nine experimental UGC projects. The study concludes that careful recruitment, face to face meetings as a compliment to online activities, heterogeneous participant groups, feedback and careful selection of a flexible online platform is important aspects for involving different stakeholders in co-creating innovative processes. © 2012 IEEE.

  • Authentic and Concurrent Evaluation : Refining an Evaluation Approach in Design Science Research
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: PACIS 2011 PROCEEDINGS. - Brisbane : Queensland University of Technology. - 9781864356441 ; , s. Paper 82-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses the need for more detailed accounts for evaluation in design science research literature. By revisiting a design project regarding the future e-newspaper we give detailed descriptions of its authentic and concurrent evaluation approach by illustrating the what, why and how of all evaluation activities throughout the whole project. The project produced seven different design artifacts that were evaluated. The utility and theoretical outcomes of the evaluation activities clearly influenced design decisions regarding newspaper design, user value and business model design as well as decisions on strategic levels. We emphasize a holistic and concurrent approach to evaluation compared to the general design science research thinking and argue that reflecting on how to seek authenticity is important. By authenticity we refer to the notion of how closely an evaluation captures the context and actual use of an artifact. With the holistic approach we encourage evaluation to be inclusive of different aspects and relationships between stakeholder groups in the evaluation activities. Further we think that concurrency is not narrowed to evaluation but also regards theorizing. While it makes sense for planning to distinguish between phases and stages of evaluation and theorizing, in practice they are intrinsically interlinked and concurrent.

  • Managing Digital Innovation in Newspaper Organizations
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: The Proceedings of the 6th ISPIM Innovation Symposium, Melbourne – 08-11 December 2013. - : International Society for Professional Innovation Management (ISPIM). - 9789522654236
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The newspaper industry has certainly benefitted from technological innovations but at the same time received new competition, challenging their position in the media landscape, forcing them to explore new innovative ideas to find new profitable revenue streams. Based on 77 interviews with newspaper managers from Europe, US and Japan over a period of seven years (2007-2013), this paper addresses the research question: How are newspaper organizations managing digital innovation? This paper takes a theoretical perspective from literature on digital innovation, and use concepts of open and closed innovation to propose a model of management modes in digital innovation. The practical implications of this study will contribute to the ongoing debate within the challenged newspaper industry.

  • User Generated Content in News Media – a Comparison of Reader and Newspaper Views
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The newspaper industry is forced to find new business models for their digital channels due to decreasing revenues from subscription, single copy sales and advertising. One of many paths to explore is user generated content (UGC). UGC has been described as a democratizing “tool”, a new way for newspapers to connect to their audience, and also to attract advertisers in a new way. So far, research on UGC in a newspaper setting has either focused on the user or the newspaper perspective. By two different questionnaires, one to newspaper readers with 3663 respondents and one to newspaper staff with 204 respondents we attempt to make a comparison of reader and newspaper views on UGC in news media. The purpose of this paper is to describe perceptions and views of user generated content in the newspaper context, and to investigate if there is a gap between newspaper staff and reader perceptions. The findings show that readers in general value UGC to be important and attractive content, but that only a few are positive to contribute with UGC. Newspaper staff shows a tendency to think that users rate UGC content value higher than they actually do. Newspaper staff also rate that users are more likely to contribute with UGC than they actually are. There is also a difference between what newspaper staff think motivates readers to contribute and what the reader survey shows. This paper contributes to the understanding of UGC and also provides valuable insights to newspaper firms considering exploring UGC.

  • Visualizing Futuristic Ubiquitous Media Services : A Collaborative Approach in the Newspaper Industry
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: ICCM 2012. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Press. - 9788988678688 - 9781467308939 ; , s. 453-458
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes a collaborative approach to envision futuristic ubiquitous media services from a media house perspective and their audiences take on that. Within a 24-month action research and experimental prototyping project with nine newspaper, three prototypes and three movie clips were produced to illustrate a future vision. Based on the results from numerous questionnaires, interviews and workshops with readers and newspaper representatives, the project team suggested five futuristic services and three personas. The movie clips was based on initial findings regarding business value, advertising, integrity etc. and was made somewhat provocative to start a debate within the industry. The services in movie clips were finally evaluated by readers in online questionnaires. © 2012 AICIT.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Social and Organizational Dynamics in IT. - Hershey, PA : IGI Global. - 2155-6334 .- 2155-6342. ; 2:4, s. 14-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital innovation processes are becoming more and more networked, and actors are growing dependent oneach other’s competences, resources and knowledge. In networks developing digital innovation actors needto identify, mobilize, and integrate diverse and heterogeneous knowledge resources to be able to innovatesuccessfully. Social aspects are important where heterogeneous actors connect, negotiate, and adjust to eachother’s perspectives. The aim of this paper is to explain how social aspects such as trust, commitment andpower, influence changes in relationships in digital innovation networks. A case study approach was selectedto study events involving multiple actors in an innovation and development project aimed at introducingtechnology that aids elderly, home care personnel and next of kin by improving the management of homecare visits. Based on the authors’ findings they present a model for how social aspects influence changes inrelationships and conclude by making six propositions. Copyright © 2012, IGI Global.
